Special Events MARCH 8 EVANSTON READS—THE OTHER WES MOORE

MARCH 17, MAY 19 FRAN RANDALL MEMORIAL CONCERT SERIES

This will be a 1 hour book discussion, led by an Evanston Public Library librarian. The book is The Other Wes Moore, a story of two real African American boys with the same name, born blocks apart within a year of each other. Both lost their fathers at a young age. Both grew up in similar neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder? In alternating narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore sets out to answer this question and, in the process, tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world. Books will be provided at Levy Center ahead of time. Books will also be available at a variety of locations across town. This event is part of the Evanston Public Library’s Evanston Reads: The Other Wes Moore community-wide reading program. For more information, visit www.epl.org. Gymnastics Registering your child for the appropriate class is the first step to ensuring success and fun with gymnastics. Our beginning classes are for children who have never taken a gymnastic class or who have taken a class for less than one year. Certain skills are necessary before taking the Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Pre-Team classes. If your child has not mastered these skills, he or she will not be able to learn more advanced skills. Your child would then have to switch to a lower level class. Therefore, if your child has taken one year or more of gymnastics lessons and you are unsure if he or she should be in the Advanced Beginning or Intermediate class, please call ChandlerNewberger at 847-448-8252 to discuss which class would be best for your child. Private and group gymnastic lessons are also available for those interested in individualized attention or for those who are aged-out of certain levels. Call Michelle at 847-448-8681 for more information about gymnastics classes at either Chandler-Newberger Center or Robert Crown Center.

This unique preschool program for children ages 3–5 years will benefit your entire family. Our program gives you those few extra hours a week for some “me” time! Families whose children attend traditional preschool programs can sign up for classes to supplement your current preschool experience. Children who are new to preschool can ease into a structured program by attending only one or two classes a week. Our teachers develop class projects and activities that focus on children’s emotional, social, physical and cognitive growth, which will allow them to move more comfortably to the next educational experience. Daily class activities include free play, creative play and organized activities. CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES Join Levy Senior Center as we travel to the Fireside Theatre in Ft. Atkinson, WI. The church basement kitchen throughout much of America is often the heart and soul of any church. In Church Basement Ladies we meet the pastor, three cooks and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation. As in any kitchen, problems arise. We watch as the four women handle a Lutefisk Dinner, a funeral, an Easter Fund Raiser, and, of course, a wedding. If your family has been approved for fee assistance, your portion of the fee must be paid in full before you (or your child) will be registered in the class.
