Evanston Resident Camp Lottery

23

Camp registration kicks off this year with a lottery to assign slots using a computer-generated, random list of applicants. The lottery will be open January 27-February 3, 2015 for Evanston residents only (ZIP codes 60201 and 60202). This process will be easier and faster for parents while it fairly allocates slots in camps which have high demand. No payment is required to participate in the lottery. See page 35 for details.

23 24 24 25

No computer or e-mail address? No problem. We expect most people to enter the lottery online, but if you don’t have computer access or don’t want to create an e-mail address, it’s no problem! Just visit any City of Evanston community center or call 311 (847-448-4311) for assistance during the lottery period of January 27-February 3, 2015. Staff will help you register.

Arts General Information About All Arts Camps

Full-Day Arts Camps —Visual & Performing Arts

Full-Day 1–week Arts Camps

The City of Evanston Arts Camps provide enrichment and exploration, giving youth the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts and practice creativity, all of which leads to a fascinating summer! All camp staff have experience working with children and a background in and love of the arts. Each camp day includes classes in a variety of disciplines and may include field trips, visits from guest artists and special workshops. Most classes are held indoors, but Arts Camp gets outside whenever the weather permits. Most of our camps go to the beach once a week.

This year, we are traveling to Africa and South America! The Full-day Arts Camps plan to spend Summer 2015 exploring a wide variety of the arts disciplines as we visit two continents without leaving the state. We will use visual art, music, storytelling, movement and dance, drama and media arts to immerse ourselves in other cultures and traditions. Sign up for one or two 4-week sessions or select weeks that you like best! All sessions may include field trips, visits from guest artists and a literary connection from the Evanston Public Library. During the first session we will look at Africa, and second session will turn our attention to South America.

Location: Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St. Age: Vary; see camp descriptions Days: Monday-Friday Times: 9am-3:30pm Fee, per camp #: $255 R/$275 NR Pre- or Post-camp Care: see page 4.

Arts Camp Locations The location of Full Day Arts Camp and YAP will be announced after approval by School District #65—these camps are always located in a District 65 school building and have Pre- and Post-camp Care. Single week themed camps and Early Childhood Camp are held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center. Media camps are slated to be held at Evanston Community Media Center, 2020 Asbury Avenue. For updates, please call 847-448-8237.

Communication Questions about Arts Camps should be directed to Angela Allyn at 847-448-8237. Prior to the start of camp, you’ll receive a link to our Parent Page which has a Parent Handbook, forms and all types of important information. Weekly newsletters are published during camp; upon request, they will be sent by e-mail. Several camps operate blogs and post final projects on YouTube. All full-day camps on pages 4-6 include lunchtime care and will utilize our full day site for Pre- or Post-camp Care. Children will be walked or bussed to Noyes for camps there.

Theme: History: His Story, Her Story, My Story, Your Story No one ever forgets their time at YAP! This creative program is for teens and tweens looking for empowering experiences in the visual and performing arts. YAP is more than an advanced version of Arts Camp; participants work with artists who help them develop an artist’s voice. YAP is designed for teens age 11 (entering grade 6) through age 16 who have any level of experience in the arts. YAP offers an important balance of advanced arts classes with good old-fashioned summer camp fun. Attend a half-day to concentrate in visual arts (am) or performing arts (pm), or enroll in a full-day combo for the best of both worlds! In previous years, morning sessions have focused on site-specific work and sculpture; afternoons have included monologue writing, stage combat and performance poetry. There is always a varied mix, as YAP classes expose teens to traditional artistic practices, as well as those that are currently popular. This gives “YAPpers” the opportunity to learn new skills, express their individual interests and work collaboratively toward final projects. Four days a week, artist instructors and mentors lead projects which enhance both individual expression and group collaboration. On Fridays, we may welcome guest performers, participate in master workshops, go on a field trip or excursion to the beach, or create “YAP Olympics.” Be sure to dress up on Wednesdays; they’re our imaginative theme days! In our frenzied world, summer provides an opportunity for teens to immerse themselves in a place and create a space: that is why YAP is a four-week program. We will allow a limited number of single-week registrations for youth with unavoidable conflicts upon request. At the end of each session, the Visual Arts program concludes with a friendly gallery opening/reception, while the Performing Arts program presents a sophisticated performance, which the campers themselves assist in producing. For more information, please call 847-448-8237.

Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s Young People’s Theatre Project

Adventure through Creation

This exciting summer arts program promises to give budding artists the experience of a lifetime while they explore the in-depth world of theatre. Campers will launch into the wonderfully imaginative world of theatre by writing, designing and performing in an original one-act play. Each young artist will participate in theatre games and skill-building exercises, collaborate in the playwriting process, learn how to design and create their own costumes, receive hands-on experience as a part of the set building team, then rehearse and perform in the final production at the end of the four-week session. The summer camp experience will be enriched with field trips to professional play productions, backstage theater tours, visits from guest artists sharing their talent with stage combat, theatrical makeup application and improvisation, and much more! Camp fee includes materials, field trips, snacks and lunch. For more information, please contact Chris Prichett at 847-448-8254. Games and activities, along with challenging art projects that include sculpture, murals, mosaics and more, will be introduced during this 2-week camp. Directed by Ms. Terri Nacey, campers will be encouraged to design their own camp experience as they are given different projects and mediums to create, build and design. For questions about this camp, please call Michelle Tompkins at 847-448-8681. Construction at Baker Park is in the planning phase and may take place during the summer of 2015. Sports Sports Camps and Mini-Camp

Sports Camp

Team sports, individual accomplishments and tons of fun await your camper at the Chandler-Newberger Sports Camp and Sports Mini-Camp! We strive to provide all the fun of a sleep-away camp, but with an emphasis on sports, teamwork and sportsmanship. From basketball and flag football to soccer and softball, your camper will take part in a variety of sports, as well as traditional camp activities such as group cheers, camp songs and team-building exercises. Instruction in each sport is combined with play to encourage everyone to improve their skills (and put those skills into action) in a nonpressuring and exciting atmosphere. Emphasis is always placed on enjoyment and sportsmanship—not the final score! Individual improvement is the focus, as well as understanding and enjoying team play and making new friends. Guided by our counselors, campers learn that cooperation and encouragement are an important part of building a successful team. Field trips, theme days and participation in sports, games and activities off-site are included in both the full-day and half-day camps. For more information, please call the Camp Director, Ricky Gonzalez, or Program Manager, Michelle Tompkins, at 847-448-8252.

Sports QuickStart Tennis Mini-Camps

Junior Tennis Mini-Camps

QuickStart Tennis is a specialized program that helps younger children learn basic tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. QuickStart I Tennis Camp is designed to introduce children age 4-5 to tennis with age-appropriate equipment including smaller racquets, special tennis balls and smaller nets. Balls bounce lower and move slower through the air, making them easier to hit. Using this equipment helps kids to develop confidence, skill and enjoyment of the game due to the immediate success they can have. In addition, the “games” approach to teaching tennis will help improve their fine and gross motor skills. Parents are asked to stay at the courts throughout the camp session, so they can support their child’s tennis game outside of camp. QuickStart II Tennis Camp helps prepare 5- to 6-years-olds for our popular Junior Tennis Camp programs by using age-appropriate equipment and games. Children will be using equipment similar to the QuickStart I Camp; however, they will begin rallying and working on more challenging skills. The tennis balls, court size and nets are all adjusted to help the kids have immediate success and have fun while learning the necessary skills to play tennis. Please dress for the heat, wear sunscreen and bring a towel and water bottle. Players must supply their own tennis racquet. For information about rain make-ups, see the box on page 11. Questions? Call Ray Doerner, Chandler-Newberger Center Program Coordinator, at 847-448-8682.

Personalized attention can make the difference! The Junior Tennis Camps offer beginning- to intermediate-level tennis players the chance to increase their skills quickly so they can move on to the next level. They’ll learn from top tennis professionals or collegiate players. All aspects of the game are covered: stroke production, singles and doubles strategy, conditioning and sportsmanship. Students improve their skills, court presence and game strategies, then put the skills into action! For variety, sessions include warm-up and stretching exercises, footwork exercises, stroke development, cooperative and competitive drilling and match play. Campers will be grouped on courts by age and playing level. For information about rain make-ups, please see the box on page 11. Questions? Please call Ray Doerner at 847-448-8252.

Beach Volleyball Mini-Camp

You don’t have to wait for winter weather to play hockey! Summer is the perfect time for boys and girls to have fun on the ice and get ready for next season. Hockey Camp features daily ice sessions, hockey and skating skill development, outdoor games, scrimmages and a great, enthusiastic staff of coaches and counselors. Rain or shine, campers will skate, play and learn skills in a relaxed atmosphere. It all adds up to a great time!

Be cool this summer at a Figure Skating Camp! Campers participate in a wide range of skating activities, including Spin clinics, moves in the field and freestyle sessions, off-ice conditioning, dance/ballet/Pilates, choreography and music interpretation, as well as daily practice of skating skills. Special theme days are incorporated into each week of camp, and campers have the opportunity to participate in our End of Summer skating exhibition during the month of August. Don’t wait too long to sign up, space is limited. Questions? Please contact Shannon Lamaster at 847-866-2924.

Our indoor camps are perfect for players who are either new to the sport or are getting ready for the upcoming indoor season. The camps for younger players will introduce all the aspects of the sport using a very light volleyball and will focus on improving coordination and motor skills through fun drills and games. The camp for older players will emphasize skill development that will bring their game to the next level. Boys and girls are not divided into different groups. Campers who are attending Chandler-Newberger afternoon Sports Camp during the same week will be supervised from 4-4:30pm for no additional fee. If you are going to utilize this service, you must contact Ray Doerner prior to the start of camp. For more information, please call 847-448-8682.

Our coaches deliver a lesson plan that is fun, yet challenging. You’ll learn the rules, fine-tune your skills, and pick up valuable strategy tips at this terrific camp. We’ll concentrate on the fundamentals of passing, setting and spiking; you’ll also learn to overhand serve and play organized games. Can you think of a better way to spend your summer than playing beach volleyball? Be ready for the challenge; the sand adds a whole new dimension! Boys and girls aren’t divided into different groups. Dress for the beach; sun care and bathing suits are suggested. You must bring a lunch for full-day camp. For more information, please call Ray Doerner at 847-448-8252. You can call the Volleyball Camp rain hot line at 847-448-8253 to find out if camp has been canceled.

Schedule Full-day participants enjoy outdoor games and dry land training from 9am until Noon. Lunch time is Noon-12:45pm; after that, all campers get ready in the locker rooms until the 1:15pm ice time. All participants will spend 2¾ hours on the ice, divided into age- and skill-level groups.

Flag Football Mini-Camp

Basketball Mini-Camp

Late Summer Basketball Mini-Camp

Introduce your child to the excitement of summer camp! Pee Wee Sports Camp, designed just for young campers, combines popular children’s games and activities with sports events. Children feel comfortable as they play familiar games and learn new ones—all in a non-competitive, supportive atmosphere. They also experience the fun of making new friends. This camp is a great way to prepare children for the popular Chandler-Newberger Sports Camp for older children.

Want to get ready for the upcoming flag football season? Whether you’re an experienced player or thinking about playing for the first time in the fall, this camp is perfect for you! You’ll learn all about non-contact football and develop throwing, catching, running and basic defensive skills. In addition, there will be speed and agility training and individualized attention to each camper’s skills. Finally, you’ll spend time at the end of the week scrimmaging with fellow campers. For more information, please call Ray Doerner at 847-448-8682.

Shoot and score with one or more of our week-long basketball camps! These camps are the perfect late-afternoon complement to any Chandler-Newberger day camp. Participants will enjoy our cool, air-conditioned gym for maximum fun and comfort! Boys and girls who register for Basketball Camp at Chandler-Newberger Center and who attend Chandler-Newberger Sports Camp in the afternoon during the same week will be supervised from 4-4:30pm for no additional fee. If you are going to use this service, you must contact Ray Doerner prior to the start of camp. For details, please call Ray Doerner at 847-448-8682.

We’re holding our annual Hoops Camp at the Robert Crown Center near the end of your summer break! The camp focuses on drills that will improve individual players’ skills in dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and teamwork. Games and contests will be held daily. All campers receive a camp T-shirt and prizes. Questions about this camp? Please call the Robert Crown Center at 847-448-8258.

Activities We encourage campers to improve their ability to play on a team and grow as individuals. Activities include sports (soccer, T-ball, basketball, floor hockey and more), games, gym time at Chandler-Newberger (Leahy Camp only) and a snack (provided by the parents). Outings include two beach days and one bowling day per 3-week camp session. Information packets are e-mailed prior to camp. If you have questions, please call Michelle Tompkins at 847-448-8681.

Campsites Pee Wee Sports Camp is held at three different locations. The location is listed next to the dates of each camp session. Bent Park has a large soccer field, playground and park shelter. Leahy Park is a large, open park with a playground and park shelter. It is located just across the street from the Chandler-Newberger Center. Baker Park has a large open field, playground and park shelter. Construction at Baker Park is in the planning phase and may take place during the summer of 2015. If we are unable to use Baker Park, an alternate location in south Evanston will be chosen and families will be notified as soon as possible.

Ultimate Adventure Camp

Fee Assistance

All of our participants have a great time at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center’s Summer Playground Plus. For 10 weeks, children have fun participating in a variety of activities including arts + crafts, all types of sports, music, drama and cooking. Children also have an opportunity to become a part of the “Garden to the Table Program,” where they help plan, plant, cultivate and eat some of their harvested produce. The entire camp will learn about proper nutrition, as well as find exciting ways to exercise. A program for providing lunch in the park will be available if a grant is awarded (see page 41). This will eliminate worries about packing a lunch. This camp is a great value: a full 10 weeks is just $1,125, which includes all field trip fees. The participant to counselor ratio is 10:1. Sports Aquatic Camps If you love the water, you’ll love our Youth Aquatic Camp! Imagine a summer when you can swim, sail, ski and “tube” as you learn about safety and gain respect for the lake! Water activities include: • Sailing • Kayaking • Swimming • Tubing • Canoeing • Water Skiing • Fishing • General Seamanship Skills For a change of pace when the weather is inclement, there will be outof-water programs and sports. Theme days will be held, along with an informal Parents’ Night. Questions? Please call Adam Abajian at 847-866 2913.

Very important registration information! Due to high demand and safety concerns, you may register a child for either the morning or afternoon camp per session, but not both. We do not prorate Aquatics Camp.

Swim Test Required Although campers will wear Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices when they are on any of the boats or other vessels, they are required to pass a 50-yard swim test (any combination of strokes) before they may participate in aquatic activities. The test will be given in the lake on the first day of camp (weather permitting). It’s in your best interest to be sure the camper can pass the test. Refunds will not be provided if the test is failed.

What about the weather? Aquatic Camp activities can be greatly influenced by weather and lake conditions, much more so than other camps. Many factors may result in campers not being able to boat, sail, paddle, kayak, ski, swim or tube. These factors include heavy rain, lightning, high waves, dangerous currents, high winds and high bacteria count, as well as boat/ equipment failure. Aquatic Camp is held every day, even if campers are unable to participate in traditional activities associated with the camp. Our staff keeps children engaged with other fun activities such as fishing, free swim, games and special events.

The fee listed is per person. Questions? Please call Adam Abajian at 847-866-2913.

Now adults who didn’t have an opportunity to participate in water sports as a child (and even if you did) can enjoy Lake Michigan! You’ll enjoy the same water sports as our very popular Aquatic Camp in a fun, relaxing environment. You’ll also learn important safety rules and tips. A swim test is required at the first class. The Chandler-Newberger Leader in Training (LIT) educational program introduces teens to the concept of leadership, helps them become aware of their own natural leadership ability, and teaches them how leadership will help them in their daily lives. Once a week, participants will meet in a classroom setting, where they will participate in discussions, team building activities, and a full curriculum that will teach them about leadership. Participants must attend all class sessions to complete the program—no exceptions or make-up sessions will be allowed. In addition to attending all LIT class sessions, each participant will be required to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours at one of the summer camp programs managed by Chandler-Newberger Community Center. Through volunteering, participants will be encouraged to use their leadership skills in real-world situations while being supervised by Camp Directors, Assistant Directors and Counselors. Prior to the first class session, participants will receive their first homework assignment via e-mail: a participant/parent packet and a questionnaire. The questionnaire will help us determine which camp best suits each LIT, which will help ensure a summer filled with learning, fun and excitement! On Monday, June 22, teens will be assigned to a specific camp; their first day of volunteering at camp will be June 23. If you want to volunteer for a morning camp program, sign up for Wednesday classes, if you prefer to volunteer for an afternoon camp program, register for Friday classes.

Volunteer opportunities for LIT participants

Contact with Camp Staff Prior to the start of the class sessions, parents are welcome to contact the LIT Supervisor or Program Manager Michelle Tompkins with questions or concerns. Once sessions begin, the LIT Supervisor primarily will communicate with the teen regarding their program experience. One of our main goals is to help teens learn the importance of leadership and responsibility, which includes holding them responsible for their schedule, attendance, class participation and volunteer efforts. However, parents will be informed of their teen’s progress via e-mailed final evaluations. If teens wish to continue volunteering beyond 50 hours, they must have received a score of 75% or better on their final evaluation.

Evaluations All participants will be evaluated by their camp and LIT Supervisor on a weekly basis. These evaluations will be given to the participant each week. At the end of the program, a final evaluation will be completed by the camp and LIT Supervisor. A score of 75% is needed on the final evaluation for the participant to successfully complete the program.

Teen Leadership Ecology Counselor in Training

Future Counselor Program

Do you want to learn what it takes to be a great camp counselor? CITs will not only learn new skills, but have a great summer experience. You will spend the first two weeks learning about communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork. During the second two weeks, you will work with EcoQuest Camp, where you will play along with campers, assist counselors and lead activities. In addition to counselor training, campers will participate in a variety of activities, including canoeing, bicycling, field trips, and beach days. A schedule will be provided prior to the start of camp. Some drop-off and pick-up locations will vary during the program. As this is a counselor in training program for the Ecology Center Camps, the program also will include topics related to the environment—such as responsible resource use, how to be a good “eco role model” and ways to reduce your carbon footprint. There is no Pre- or Post-camp Care available for this program. Note: the content of the two sessions is identical; due to high demand, registration is limited to one session. If you have questions about the program, please call 847-448-8256.

This training program is geared for youth who feel they are too old for camp, but are still too young to be home all day by themselves. Future Counselors will learn how to follow a daily schedule and set up for basic activities. Towards the end of the summer, they will be responsible for creating a group activity. Participants will take part in a one-day orientation before summer camp begins, attend staff meetings and learn how to handle some of the same responsibilities as our camp counselors. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 22; please apply in person at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St. For more information, including the training date, please call 847-448-8254.

Robert Crown Counselor in Training Program You can be a part of the future of recreation in Evanston by joining the Robert Crown Center team! This Counselor in Training (CIT) Camp prepares teens to work with staff and contribute their talents to the programs offered by Robert Crown Community Center. Participants serve as role models for the younger children who are enrolled in the Center’s summer camps, and receive weekly training from a variety of social service professionals and mentors. • Do you want to become a truly viable candidate for future employment? • Do you want to find out what works for you, while you learn to work with us? This program builds community and prepares youth to work with children in a variety of settings. CIT participants receive basic training on a range of topics: how to interview and apply for a job, work-place skills, simple first aid, inclusion skills, how to assist small groups of campers in crafts and sports activities, how to provide positive discipline, public safety and more. Senior staff evaluate and mentor the participants throughout the seven-week program and provide a final evaluation. The first week of training will include observation of the many camps offered at Robert Crown Center. Training days and times for the remainder of the summer will be determined during the first week of counselor in training camp. The following week, CIT participants will be assigned to volunteer at a camp, based on an interview and personal interests. Options are Fun Factory (age 4½-8), Kid City (age 7-10) or Summertime Creative Play (age 2½-6). Note: to volunteer at the Creative Play preschool camp, additional training may be required and some restrictions will apply. They may volunteer as many as five days a week (half-day or full-day as their schedule permits), through August 1. Participants will commit to the number of days and hours with which they are comfortable, and allow them to pursue other summer activities. The enrollment process includes registration, an application and brief interview. The registration fee includes training and supplies, field trips, and small group activities. Variety Camp 101: Back to Basics

Tween Machine Camp

Our newly revamped camp provides the best of Evanston’s parks and beaches along with the best of what a small variety camp can be. Our individualized approach offers what can be your child’s most memorable camp memories: small groups defined by age and interests, attention to detail, and a special balance of indoor and outdoor activities. Evanston’s beautiful beaches and playgrounds are the center of this new-yet-traditional summer camp. Beach visits will include both water play and sand castles...quiet days might include reading or building, self-directed projects and crafts, small group projects or rainy day sports and games. In addition to occasional field trips celebrating our back- to-basics theme, weekly visits to Robert Crown Center will include the options of ice skating, dance or fine-art instruction, or cooperative play. Campers attend from 9am-5pm, or 7:30am-6pm There are no half day or summer school options available.

In addition to a wide variety of day camp activities, our young tweens will enjoy our highly structured camp that requires weekly participation in service activities in Evanston and nearby communities. Involvement in each community service project will earn our young community members special field trips related to each project completed. In addition, campers will go to the beach and pool, with an emphasis on improving water skills and safety. Weekly literacy activities, arts and crafts, as well as other variety day camp activities are included. Our Tween Machine will help our campers learn responsibility and commitment and offer the opportunity to practice teamwork, sharing and caring in a safe and positive environment. Parent and Camper Handbooks will be provided at an Open House in May 2015. To confirm the camp location for 2015, please call Robert Crown Center at 847-448-8258.

This can be done at any time. You may enter the lottery from 9am on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 through midnight on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. The date and time entered is not a factor in the selection process, but to be included you must enter by February 3. To enter the lottery, go to cityofevanston.org/register. Enter information about each child and the camp number(s). All entries are considered final and correct after submission, so carefully review all information before pressing the submit button. Children enrolled more than once (including from more than one location) may be disqualified from the lottery. Camp registration kicks off this year with a lottery that will assign slots using a computer-generated, random list of applicants. The lottery will be open from January 27–February 3, 2015. This process will be easier and faster for parents while it fairly allocates slots in camps which have high demand. No payment is required to participate in the lottery. The lottery is for Evanston residents only (ZIP codes 60201 and 60202).

To register online for the lottery:

* No class Friday, July 3.

Lottery Results Lottery results will be e-mailed by Friday, Feb. 6, 2015. Please check your spam folder for e-mails and add recreation@cityofevanston.org to your contact list. If your child is selected for a slot, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with detailed instructions regarding payments. Anyone not selected for their first choice and/or second choice (if listed) will be placed on a wait list for their first choice camp selection (see section below). Please read the e-mail carefully for instructions regarding how and when to submit deposits and paperwork and office hours for your child’s camp location. Please retain the e-mail for future reference. It's your responsibility to adhere to all deadlines for payment and paperwork; failure to meet deadlines will forfeit your child’s slot in camp and you'll lose any funds previously submitted.

Lottery Sibling Registration Siblings and/or members of the same immediate family within one household ID can be linked for the lottery if you need them to participate in the same camp section. A “Lottery Grouping Request” form must be received by February 3, 2015. It is available at cityofevanston.org/summercamps, the Morton Civic Center and all community centers. More details are listed on the website and in the grouping request packet.

Wait List If your child isn't selected, s/he will be placed on a wait list. As slots become available, children will be selected from the wait list and parents will be notified via e-mail. Please be prepared to submit payment within one week after being notified of an opening. Slots are non-transferable; if your child receives a slot, you cannot give this slot to another person, including family members.

After the Lottery—Open Registration Don't worry. . . if you didn't participate in the lottery, registrations will be accepted for remaining camp slots on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 9am on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. At that time, Evanston residents and nonresidents may register for camps online at cityofevanston.org/register and staff at the Morton Civic Center and recreation centers will accept camp registrations in person or by phone. A $50 deposit for each camp program is due February 23, 2015. Full payment for camp program is required by April 15, 2015.

Registration Cut-off! In order to have safe, adequate staffing levels on the first day of camp, registration may close before camp starts; registration also closes when full capacity is met. If registration is closed, ask if there is a wait list; payment is not required to be on a wait list.

Transfer Policy, Payments and Refunds

Ways to Pay

Transfer Policy Through May 13, 2015, you may request in writing that your child transfer from one City of Evanston camp to a new registration in another City of Evanston camp. Submit your request to: Recreation Registration Coordinator, Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., Evanston, IL 60201. Transfers are made based on availability in the second camp. Program fees vary. If the camp you are transferring into has a higher fee, you must pay the difference before the transfer will be approved. If the camp you are transferring into has a lower fee, a refund for the difference will be mailed in two to four weeks. Camp deposits or camp balance payments are not transferable to non-camp programs. Starting May 14, 2015, the department reserves the right to accommodate or deny transfers on a case-by-case basis. There will be a $20 charge for all transfers requested after May 13 (if the transfer can be accommodated). Do not bring your child to the “new” camp until you are contacted by telephone that the transfer has been approved and finalized.

Fee Assistance/Scholarships A limited amount of fee assistance (scholarships) is available to qualifying Evanston residents based on family size and total family income. There are a limited number of spaces in camps and each camp has a limit on fee assistance, so please apply early! Fee assistance applications are not processed by telephone and it takes at least five business days for processing. Fee assistance applications are available at community centers and the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., and online at cityofevanston.org/ recreationscholarship. To receive a copy by mail, please call 311 (847-448-4311). Fee assistance is valid for six months. For your initial application, we will accept your current financial information (2014 tax return and W-2). You must provide updated financial information before camp starts. Some families receive camp payment assistance from a third party agency. The City of Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will work with families receiving camp payment assistance from a third party agency, providing the following guidelines are followed: • The paperwork process must begin by May 13; please contact the camp’s program manager by that date. • A payment contract must be signed by the primary guardian of the camper before the first day of camp, indicating they will be responsible for the guardian co-payment or the entire camp balance in the event assistance is denied. If the above items are not completed in the time frame indicated, the City of Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department reserves the right to deny participation until required fees are paid.

2015

If your child is ill, do not send him/her to camp. First aid for minor cuts or abrasions is available. The City of Evanston doesn’t carry hospitalization insurance for program participants; your family’s individual health care policy must cover all your medical needs. Please pay special attention to the area on the registration form that asks for your phone numbers so we can contact you if the need arises. The form also has an area to list health concerns. Parents and camp staff must work together to ensure that each child understands the importance of safe camping. Before camp starts, some camps will include the City of Evanston’s Code of Conduct policy as part of the parent packet. It will be implemented if a child’s behavior begins to interfere with the rights of others.

Special Needs/Medications/Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Does your child need any special accommodations to allow him/her full participation? Examples are medication, behavior management and physical assistance. The City of Evanston welcomes the participation of all individuals in our programs, including those with disabilities. We are fully committed to complying with the ADA and providing reasonable accommodations to facilitate participation in our programs. The sooner we know about your special situation, the more time we have to make reasonable accommodations to improve your child’s recreational experience with us! At the time of registration, it is the responsibility of a parent/guardian to contact Myra Gorman, Program Coordinator, to make arrangements for any accommodations. Those registering closer to the start of camp must call Myra no later than 10 days before camp starts; otherwise, camp attendance will be delayed. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Myra at 847-448-8045 (voice); 847-448-8064 (TTY) or 800-526-0857 (IL Relay Center voice transmission).

General Information Pick-up/Drop-off Policy & Misc. Information

Pre- and Post-Camp Care and Lunch Bunch

“Safety First” Drop-off and Pick-up Please be aware that many camps have sign-in and sign-out procedures that must be followed. Parents, custodians or guardians are responsible for promptly picking up children when the program ends. If a child is picked up more than five minutes late, you will be assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute period. Continued tardiness may result in your child being removed from the remainder of the session.

Campsites Although campsites listed were confirmed at press time, locations are subject to change based on space availability and School District #65’s final approval in spring 2015. Visit cityofevanston.org/summercamps for an update or call 311 (847-448-4311).

Starting Date/Snow Days/Summer School Schedules were set assuming School District #65’s school year will end before Friday, June 5, 2015. If the school year is extended and the starting date of our camps changes, we’ll mail a notice to parents/ guardians in May. If your child is required to attend summer school, please contact the camp director so potential accommodations may be discussed. The camp refund policy applies.

Pre- and Post-camp Care assists parents by offering a safe environment for their children beyond normal camp hours. Each Pre- and Post-camp Care site offers children access to various recreational activities and equipment so children can relax and play. This is not an extension of the camp curriculum; activities might include playground time and board games. Pre- and Post-camp Care service is available for campers registered in specific camps (see list below). Fee assistance for Pre- and Post-camp Care is available to qualified Evanston residents only for weekly payments. Care will be supervised at an approximately 10:1 camper/staff ratio; at many camp sites, assistant directors will be responsible for supervision before and after the normal camp hours.

Schedule and Fees: Pre-care: 7:30-9am; $10 per day or $25 per week Post-care: 3-6pm; $15 per day or $35 per week
