Summer camps will help your child enjoy summer in Evanston by learning new skills and meeting friends with similar interests. The pleasant memories will last a lifetime! Camp Registration Day

Contact Information

No more waiting for camp lottery results!

Evanston Recreation Division Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. Phone: 311 (847-448-4311) E-mail: recreation@cityofevanston.org

Camp registration kicks off this year with a simple new process to benefit Evanston residents

This year there will be a camp registration day taking place on February 4, 2017 from 8am–Noon online and in-person at the Robert Crown Community Center only. No phone registrations will be allowed at this time. This will replace the camp lottery system from previous years. Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. This process will fairly allocate slots in camps which have high demand. The camp registration day is for Evanston residents only (ZIP codes 60201 and 60202). Proof of residency is required. After Noon on February 4, you will not be able to register for additional camps or wait lists until Monday, February 6 at 10am.

Please don’t wait too long to register

In order to have safe, adequate staffing levels on the first day of camp, registration will close before camp starts. If registration is closed, ask if there is a wait list; payment is not required to be on a wait list.

Arts Arts Camps General Information The City of Evanston Arts Camps provide enrichment and exploration, giving youth the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts and practice creativity, all of which leads to a fascinating summer. All camp staff has experience working with children and a background in and love of the arts. Each camp day includes classes in a variety of disciplines and may include field trips, visits from guest artists and special workshops. Most classes are held indoors, but Arts Camp gets outside whenever the weather permits. Most of our camps go to the beach once a week.

Arts Camp Locations

The location of Immersion of the Arts will be announced after approval by School District #65 —this camp is always located in a District 65 school building and has Pre- and Post-Camp Care. YAP, single week themed camps and Early Childhood Camp are held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center. For updates, please call 847-448-8263.

Communication

Questions about Arts Camps should be directed to Angela Allyn at 847-448-8263. Prior to the start of camp, you will receive a link to the Parent Web page via e-mail, where you can download a detailed manual, all your forms, and information on how to sign up for extended care for the camps that offer it. Weekly newsletters are published during camp; upon request, they will be sent by e-mail. Several camps operate blogs and post final projects on YouTube.

Immersion in the Arts Camp This year’s theme is “What’s Your Story” and we turn to children’s literature from around the world for inspiration. We will spend the summer exploring a wide variety of the arts disciplines as we bring to life beloved children’s tales from a different region every week. We will use visual art, music, storytelling, creative writing, movement, dance, drama, and media arts to bring to life the stories that have captivated children for generations. Four week sessions will allow campers to create a sense of community and create a capstone project to celebrate their creativity. Days may include multiple classes, field trips, visits from guest artists and a literary connection with the Evanston Public Library. We might create our own graphic novels, illustrate stories, design props, make film adaptations and create fan fiction. This camp offers pre and post care. No camp July 4. YAP (Young Artist Program) Theme: Whats Your Story?

No one ever forgets their time at YAP. This creative program is for teens and tweens looking for empowering experiences in the visual and performing arts. YAP is more than an advanced version of Arts Camp; participants work with artists who help them develop an artist’s voice. YAP is designed for teens age 11 (entering grade 6) through age 16 who have any level of experience in the arts.

4

cityofevanston.org/summercamps

YAP offers an important balance of advanced arts classes with good old-fashioned summer camp fun. Attend a half-day to concentrate in visual arts (am) or performing arts (pm), or enroll in a full-day combo for the best of both worlds. In previous years, morning sessions have focused on site-specific work and sculpture; afternoons have included monologue writing, stage combat and performance poetry. There is always a varied mix, as YAP classes expose teens to traditional artistic practices, as well as those that are currently popular. This gives “YAPpers” the opportunity to learn new skills, express their individual interests and work collaboratively toward final presentations and projects. Four days a week, artist instructors and mentors lead projects which enhance both individual expression and group collaboration. On Fridays, we may welcome guest performers, participate in master workshops, go on a field trip or excursion to the beach, or create “YAP Olympics.” Be sure to dress up on Wednesdays; they’re our imaginative theme days. In our frenzied world summer provides a time for young people to explore passions and develop new mastery—YAP provides a time and space for creating community. We work at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center with a compressed three week session framework to better align with other popular Evanston programs. At the end of each session, the Visual Arts program concludes with a friendly gallery opening/reception, while the Performing Arts program presents a sophisticated performance, which the campers themselves assist in producing. For more information, please call 847-448-8263. Check out our video at www.cityofevanston.org/evanstonartsvideo. No camp July 4. Location: Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St. Age: 11-16 yrs. Everyone from edgy basement work in Bucktown, the Lyric Opera of Chicago to major motion pictures are utilizing artist made characters to tell stories. This exciting summer arts program promises to give budding artists the experience of a lifetime exploring theatre through the world of puppetry. Campers will work alongside professional puppet makers, and puppeteers to take a magical journey into this beautifully unique art form. Each camper will learn about many different kinds of puppet traditions from around the world including shadow puppets, hand puppets, pop-up rod puppets, finger puppets and toy theatre. They will also learn many different skills in puppetry arts; how to properly warm up their bodies and hands, how to turn an everyday object into a character, what sort of materials and tools are used by professional puppeteers, how to build a puppet from scratch, and finally how to be a puppeteer. At the end of the camp, everyone will perform in a show they’ve collaboratively created using their imaginations, for family and friends. Sports Aquatic Camps General Information Very important registration information! Due to high demand and safety concerns, you may register a child for either the morning or afternoon Youth Aquatic Camp per session, but not both. We do not prorate any Aquatic Camp offerings.

Swim Test Required

Although campers will wear Coast Guardapproved personal flotation devices when they are on any of the boats or other vessels, they are required to pass a 50-yard swim test (any combination of strokes) before they may participate in aquatic activities. The test will be given in the lake on the first day of camp (weather permitting). It’s in your best interest to be sure the camper can pass the test. Refunds will not be provided if the test is failed.

What about the weather?

Aquatic Camp is held everyday, but activities can be greatly influenced by weather and lake conditions. Factors that can result in campers not being able to participate in water activities include heavy rain, fog, lightning, high waves, dangerous currents, high winds and high bacteria count, as well as boat/equipment failure.

Camp Staff

Instructors are highly qualified and have extensive lakefront experience. All staff members are certified in waterfront lifeguarding, C.P.R. and First Aid.

Apparel

Bring a swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes or sandals. Dress for the weather at the lakefront (it’s often 10° cooler at the lake).

Sports Camps and Sports Mini-Camp Team sports, individual accomplishments and tons of fun await your camper at the ChandlerNewberger Sports Camp and Sports Mini-Camp! We strive to provide all the fun of a sleep-away camp, but with an emphasis on sports, teamwork and sportsmanship. From basketball and flag football to soccer and softball, your camper will take part in a variety of sports, as well as traditional camp activities such as group cheers, camp songs and team-building exercises. Instruction in each sport is combined with play to encourage everyone to improve their skills (and put those skills into action) in a non-pressuring and exciting atmosphere. Emphasis is always placed on enjoyment and sportsmanship—not the final score! Individual improvement is the focus, as well as understanding and enjoying team play and making new friends. Guided by our counselors, campers learn that cooperation and encouragement are an important part of building a successful team. Field trips, theme days and participation in sports, games and activities off-site are included in both the full-day and half-day camps. For more information, please call the Camp Director, Ricky Gonzalez, or Program Manager, Michelle Tompkins, at 847-448-8252. No camp July 4. Location: Chandler-Newberger Center, 1028 Central St.

QuickStart Tennis is a specialized program that helps younger children learn basic tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. QuickStart I Tennis Camp is designed to introduce children age 4-6 years to tennis with age-appropriate equipment including smaller racquets, special tennis balls and smaller nets. Balls bounce lower and move slower through the air, making them easier to hit. Using this equipment helps kids to develop confidence, skill and enjoyment of the game due to the immediate success they can have. In addition, the “games” approach to teaching tennis will help improve their fine and gross motor skills. Parents are asked to stay at the courts throughout the camp session, so they can support their child’s tennis game outside of camp. Please dress for the heat, wear sunscreen and bring a towel and water bottle. Players must supply their own tennis racquet QuickStart II Tennis Camp helps prepare children age 6-8 years for our popular Junior Tennis Camp programs by using age-appropriate equipment and games. Children will be using equipment similar to the QuickStart I Camp; however, they will begin rallying and working on more challenging skills. The tennis balls, court size and nets are all adjusted to help the kids have immediate success and have fun while learning the necessary skills to play tennis. Please dress for the heat, wear sunscreen and bring a towel and water bottle. Players must supply their own tennis racquet. Rain dates are scheduled on Fridays during the week of participation. Junior Tennis Mini-Camps Personalized attention can make the difference. The Junior Tennis Camps offer beginning-to intermediate-level tennis players the chance to increase their skills quickly so they can move on to the next level. They’ll learn from top tennis professionals or collegiate players. All aspects of the game are covered: stroke production, singles and doubles strategy, conditioning and sportsmanship. Students improve their skills, court presence and game strategies, then put the skills into action. For variety, sessions include warm-up and stretching exercises, footwork exercises, stroke development, cooperative and competitive drilling and match play. Camps will meet at the Quad on Oakton or another location if there is inclement weather. Campers will be grouped on courts by age and playing level. For information, please contact 847-448-8252.

Teen Leadership Aquatic Counselor in Training

Ecology Counselor in Training

This camp gives you the training and experience that potential Aquatic Camp counselors need. Participants will work every day while “shadowing” counselors, learning how to teach basic aquatic skills (tubing, sailing, waterskiing, fishing, etc.). Each session includes a Parents’ Night. While anyone who can pass the 50-yard swim test may enroll in this program, participation in this camp does not guarantee future employment with the City of Evanston as Aquatic Camp staff. In addition to needing leadership and aquatic skills, Aquatic Camp staff must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Professional Rescuer C.P.R. and First Aid, and must have worked as a lifeguard for the City of Evanston for at least one season. No camp July 4. Location: Dempster Street Beach, Dempster St. at the lakefront Age: 14-17 yrs. Fee: $175 R/$225 NR

Do you want to learn what it takes to be a great camp counselor? CITs will not only learn new skills, but have a great summer experience. You will spend the first two weeks learning about communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork. During the second two weeks, you will work with EcoQuest Camp, where you will play along with campers, assist counselors and lead activities. In addition to counselor training, campers will participate in a variety of activities, including canoeing, bicycling, field trips, and beach days. A schedule will be provided prior to the start of camp. Some drop-off and pick-up locations will vary during the program. As this is a counselor in training program for the Ecology Center Camps, the program also will include topics related to the environment— such as responsible resource use, how to be a good “eco role model” and ways to reduce your carbon footprint. There is no Pre- or PostCamp Care available for this program. Note: the content of the two sessions is identical; due to high demand, registration is limited to one session. If you have questions about the program, please call 847-448-8256. Location: TBD Age: 12-14 yrs. Fee: $405 R/$507 NR

Leader In Training (LIT) Program The Chandler-Newberger Leader in Training (LIT) educational program introduces teens to the concept of leadership, helps them become aware of their own natural leadership ability, and teaches them how leadership will help them in their daily lives. Once a week, participants will meet in a classroom setting, where they will participate in discussions, team building activities, and a full curriculum that will attempt to teach them about leadership. Participants must attend all class sessions to complete the program, however, make-up sessions will be allowed. In addition to attending all LIT class sessions, each participant will be required to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours at one of the summer camp programs managed by ChandlerNewberger Community Center. Through volunteering, participants will be encouraged to use their leadership skills in real-world situations while being supervised by Camp Directors, Assistant Directors and Counselors. Prior to the first class session, participants will receive their first homework assignment via e-mail: a participant/parent packet and a questionnaire. The questionnaire will help us determine which camp best suits each LIT, which will help ensure a summer filled with learning, fun and excitement! Campers will receive their camp assignment at the second class. Class dates and times will be set and emailed to all participants by April 10. For specific information on classes please call Michelle at 847-448-8681 before registering. No camp July 4. *Please note, the dates and times of the classes have not been confirmed, at press time we were still confirming the instructor for this program. Class dates and times will be confirmed and emailed to all participants by April 10.

Contact with Camp Staff

Prior to the start of the class sessions, parents are welcome to contact the LIT Supervisor or Program Manager Michelle Tompkins with questions or concerns. Once sessions begin, the LIT Supervisor primarily will communicate with the teen regarding their program experience. One of our main goals is to help teens learn the importance of leadership and responsibility, which includes holding them responsible for their schedule, attendance, class participation and volunteer efforts. However, parents will be informed of their teen’s progress via e-mailed final evaluations. If teens wish to continue volunteering beyond 50 hours, they must have received a score of 75% or better on their final evaluation.

2017

Evaluations

All participants will be evaluated by their camp and LIT Supervisor on a weekly basis. These evaluations will be given to the participant each week. At the end of the program, a final evaluation will be completed by the camp and LIT Supervisor. A score of 75% is needed on the final evaluation for the participant to successfully complete the program. Location: Chandler-Newberger Center Age: 13-15 yrs. Robert Crown Counselor in Training Program You can be a part of the future of recreation in Evanston by joining the Robert Crown Center team! This Counselor in Training (CIT) Camp prepares teens to work with staff and contribute their talents to the programs offered by Robert Crown Community Center. Participants serve as role models for the younger children who are enrolled in the Center’s summer camps, and receive weekly training from a variety of social service professionals and mentors. This program builds community and prepares youth to work with children in a variety of settings. CIT participants receive basic training on a range of topics: how to interview and apply for a job, work-place skills, inclusion skills, how to assist small groups of campers in crafts and sports activities, redirection strategies, safety procedures and more. Senior staff evaluate and mentor the participants throughout the six-week program and provide a final evaluation. The first week of training will include observation of the many camps offered at Robert Crown, as well as an introduction to the program staff and program objectives. Training days and times for the remainder of the summer will be determined during the first week of the camp. The following week, CIT participants will be assigned to volunteer at camp, based on an interview and personal interests, while also receiving training on the various topics listed above. Volunteer options include Summer Preschool Adventure (ages 2-3 or 3-5), Fun Factory (ages 5-7), or Kid City (ages 7-10). Volunteers are expected to participate in the program Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm for the entire six-week period. Volunteers may speak with the program coordinator to adjust their schedule if necessary. The registration fee includes training and supplies, field trips, and small group activities. The City of Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will work with families receiving camp payment assistance from a third party agency, providing the following guidelines are followed: • The paperwork process must begin by May 8, 2017; please contact the camp’s program manager by that date. • A payment contract must be signed by the primary guardian of the camper before the first day of camp, indicating they will be responsible for the guardian co-payment or the entire camp balance in the event assistance is denied. If the above items are not completed in the time frame indicated, the City of Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department reserves the right to deny participation until required fees are paid.

General Information Health, Safety and ADA Information/Emergency Contact Form All participants in City of Evanston camp programs are required to have an information/emergency contact form on file at the camp site. This form can be downloaded from the City of Evanston’s web site at www.cityofevanston.org/summercamps. This form will be included in the parent packet which is made available prior to the start of camp. Prior to the first day of camp, you will need to submit an information form directly to the community center for every camp in which your child is enrolled. For your child’s safety, please include a photo of your child. Please share any important information about your child that will help us make this year’s camp experience the best possible!

Health, Contact Information and Code of Conduct If your child is ill, do not send him/her to camp. First aid for minor cuts or abrasions is available. The City of Evanston doesn’t carry hospitalization insurance for program participants; your family’s individual health care policy must cover all your medical needs. Please pay special attention to the area on the information form that asks for your phone numbers so we can contact you if the need arises. The form also has an area to list health concerns. Parents and camp staff must work together to ensure that each child understands the importance of safe camping. Before camp starts, camps will include the City of Evanston’s Code of Conduct policy as part of the parent packet. It will be implemented if a child’s behavior begins to interfere with the rights of others.

Special Needs/Medications/ Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Does your child need any special accommodations to allow him/her full participation? Examples are medication, behavior management and physical assistance. The City of Evanston welcomes the participation of all individuals in our programs, including those with disabilities. We are fully committed to complying with the ADA and providing reasonable accommodations to facilitate participation in our programs. The sooner we know about your special situation, the more time we have to make reasonable accommodations to improve your child’s recreational experience with us! At the time of registration, it is the responsibility of a parent/guardian to contact Myra Gorman, Program Coordinator, to make arrangements for any accommodations. Those registering closer to the start of camp must call Myra no later than 2 weeks before camp starts; otherwise, camp attendance will be delayed. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Myra at 847-448-8045 (voice); 847-448-8064 (TTY) or 800-526-0857 (IL Relay Center voice transmission).

Pick-up/Drop-off Policy & Misc. Information “Safety First” Drop-off and Pick-up Please be aware that camps have sign-in and sign-out procedures that must be followed. Parents, custodians or guardians are responsible for promptly picking up children when the program ends. If a child is picked up more than five minutes late, you will be assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute period. Continued tardiness may result in your child being removed from the remainder of the session.

Campsites Although campsites listed were confirmed at press time, locations are subject to change based on space availability and School District #65’s final approval in spring 2017. Visit www.cityofevanston.org/summercamps for an update or call 311 (847-448-4311).

Starting Date/Snow Days/ Summer School Schedules were set assuming School District #65’s school year will end before Friday, June 6, 2017. If the school year is extended and the starting date of our camps changes, we’ll mail a notice to parents/guardians in May. If your child is required to attend summer school, please contact the program coordinator so potential accommodations may be discussed. The camp refund policy applies.

Quality Assurance We strive to provide the highest-quality programs. We’re confident that all participants will enjoy them. However, if you are not satisfied, we welcome suggestions and ideas that you think will help us improve our programs.

Photography/Videotaping Photographs or videotapes are occasionally taken of camp participants for promotional and administrative uses for the City of Evanston. If you wish to place your child’s name on a list of children who shouldn’t be videotaped or photographed, please call 847-448-8041.

Updated or Corrected Information Every attempt was made to supply accurate information, but information may change after the guide is printed in December. Camp locations are expected to be confirmed in May after School District #65 determines their needs. Updates, including confirmed camp sites, will be posted at www.cityofevanston.org/summercamps. You also may call 311 (847-448-4311) for updates.

Pre- and Post-Camp Care Pre- and Post-Camp Care assists parents by offering a safe environment for their children beyond normal camp hours. Each Pre- and Post-Camp Care site offers children access to various recreational activities and equipment so children can relax and play. This is not an extension of the camp curriculum; activities might include playground time and board games. Pre- and Post-Camp Care service is available for campers registered in specific camps (see list below). Fee assistance for Pre- and Post-camp Care is available to qualified Evanston residents only for weekly payments. Care will be supervised at an approximately 10:1 camper/staff ratio; at many camp sites, assistant directors will be responsible for supervision before and after the normal camp hours.

Fees:

Pre-care: $15 per day or $30 per week Post-care: $15 per day or $40 per week

Pre- and Post-camp Care is available at an additional cost at only the following camps: Ecology Center:

EcoQuest, EcoExplorer, EcoTravelers and Summer Summit. All Ecology camps will have post-care at one campsite (site TBD).

Chandler-Newberger Center:

Sports Camp, Sports Mini-Camp and Ultimate Adventure Camp. Chess Camp only has Pre-Camp Care.

Arts Camps:

Immersion in the Arts Camp, Architecture Camp, Animalia Camp, Textiles Camp, Knights Camp, Princess Camp, Crafters Camp, Pirate Camp, and Renaissance Camp.

How to Register for Pre- or Post-camp Care You may now register online for Pre- and PostCamp Care starting at 10am on March 27, 2017. For a registration form, please contact the community center where your child will attend camp (see below). If the camp is to be held at a school, park or site to be determined, call the phone number listed in the camp description; staff will mail you a form for that camp. If your child will attend camp at different locations, you will need to complete a registration form for each camp site.
