JUNE 11–26 A SONG FOR CORETTA A Song For Coretta by Pearl Cleage takes place on February 6, 2006; people began lining up at dawn outside of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King. People of all ages stood patiently for hours, waiting to say goodbye and express sorrow at her passing. When a cold rain began to fall at sunset at midnight, the crowd had dwindled to a determined few. The five fictional characters in this play are at the end of that long line of mourners. KNOWING A FEW FIRE SAFETY GRILLING TIPS WILL HELP EVERYONE HAVE A SAFE SUMMER. • • • • • •

Only use your grill outside. Keep it away from siding and deck rails. Clean your grill after each use. This will remove grease that can start a fire. Open your gas grill before lighting. Keep a 3-foot safe zone around your grill and campfire. This will keep kids and pets safe. Place the coals from your grill in a metal can with a lid once they have cooled. • Keep an eye on your grill, fire pit or patio torches. Never leave any of them unattended.

Health and Human Services MANAGING SUMMER HEAT We all look forward to summer, but heat-related illness, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, can occur in extremely warm, humid weather if you aren’t careful.

To prevent illness: • Drink lots of water and avoid alcohol, caffeine and reduce your salt intake • Stay in cool, shaded areas outdoors and keep the blinds drawn or lights down indoors • Use air conditioners or fans; avoid unventilated areas • Reduce physical activity • Take cool baths or showers and use cool towels • Wear loose, light cotton clothing and a breathable hat • Eat light meals and avoid using the oven • Check on the elderly; they at higher risk for complications from the heat • NEVER let anyone sit in a hot car, even for a few minutes!

IT’S WEST NILE VIRUS SEASON West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus from an infected bird. Because there are no medications or vaccinations against West Nile virus infection, you should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Only about 1 in 5 people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness. Symptoms are usually mild and include fever, headache and body aches. Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurological illness. Persons older than 60 years of age have the highest risk of severe disease.

To reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and avoid mosquito bites, you should:

EVANSTON, RETHINK YOUR DRINK! Did you know that a typical 20-ounce bottle of soda contains the equivalent of 16 packets of sugar? The Evanston of Health & Human Services Department, in partnership with NorthShore University HealthSystem, is launching a city-wide campaign to educate residents on the health risks associated with drinking sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and options for healthier beverage choices. Regular consumption of SSBs such as sodas, sports drinks, sweet teas, and energy drinks can lead to obesity and even heart disease and diabetes. Learn more at www.cityofevanston.org/ rethinkyourdrink or follow #ERTYD on Twitter.

SWIMMING BEACHES OPEN MAY 28 Evanston’s five public swimming beaches will be open May 28 through September 5. To protect your health, water samples from each beach are collected and analyzed seven days a week to determine the level of E. coli, which is an indicator that other disease-causing bacteria may be present. To achieve even more accurate information, the City has partnered with Loyola University to create a predictive model to help determine whether swimming should be banned. It evaluates rainfall, rain intensity, water temperature, etc., to create a statistical equation predicting water quality. To learn whether there is a swimming ban at a particular beach due to water quality, visit the beach status page at www.cityofevanston.org/beach or follow @COEBeach on Twitter. You can sign up for alerts via email or mobile phone via the link on the beach status web page. After swimming is banned, the water area is closed until further water samples show a bacteria level that is not thought to be a risk to human health.

Please help keep our beach water safe: • Make sure infants wear tight-fitting rubber or plastic pants if they enter the water • Discourage water fowl; don’t feed ducks or geese • Encourage children to use the toilet frequently If you have concerns about beach water quality, please call 311.

• Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn • When outdoors, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts and use insect repellents. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR355, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-methane-diol provide a longer lasting protection. Repellents should be used according to the label instructions; consult with a physician before using repellents on infants. • Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. • Eliminate sources of standing water by emptying stagnant water in wading pools, bird baths, pet water dishes, old tires, gutters, flower pots, and pool covers on a regular basis. • Report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded areas and similar locations with stagnant water where mosquitoes will breed by calling 311. • Report dead birds by calling 311. Dead birds may be a sign that West Nile virus is circulating between birds and mosquitoes in the area. For more information, please call 311 or e-mail health@cityofevanston.org.

GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM In order to provide outstanding care to our community while expanding services to help underserved people within our borders, the Health & Human Services Department collaborates and networks with a diverse group of non-profit agencies and organizations. Regional efforts in 2016 • The City is represented on the Association of Homeless Advocates in the North/Northwest District • Staff helps influence policy at the Suburban Cook Alliance board • Oakton Community College continues to provide in-house GED and Adult Basic Education classes to General Assistance participants • The Evanston Public Library provides computer classes for GED students weekly • YWCA Evanston/North Shore continues to offer financial literacy workshops • A partnership is being established with Peer Services to provide referrals for substance abuse treatment • Staff is in the process of developing a partnership with Interfaith Action of Evanston, which would strengthen an already strong employment program.

Registration: 847-448-8252 Online: www.cityofevanston.org/register Call the Chandler-Newberger Community Center: 847-448-8682 with questions regarding registration/fees. Call E-Town Tennis at 847-498-1360 for info. about program content and levels of play.

GENERAL INFORMATION Our tennis programs emphasize fun, fitness and friendship! All programs provide a wide variety of instruction, including stroke development, strategy, court positioning, shot selection, footwork and supervised match play. We’re looking forward to a great season with our tennis vendor, E-Town Tennis! All youth and adult classes will be taught by top area tennis professionals. Please make sure you are dressed in appropriate attire for physical activity; every participant must bring a tennis racquet. QuickStart Tennis offers kids a chance to learn tennis while having fun. The format takes a new and better approach to introducing kids to the game. Tennis balls are bigger and lower in compression and smaller nets are used, which allow for instant success.

Prorating, Rain and Make Up Policies Tennis classes will not be prorated. Those who can’t complete a class due to injury/health reasons may receive a prorated refund after submitting a doctor’s note. Missed classes may be made up by attending an equivalent class within the same session; the instructor must be notified in advance by calling E-Town Tennis at 847-498-1360. To find out if your class has been canceled due to rain, call the tennis rain hotline at 847-866-8543. If the message is from an earlier time or previous date and it is one hour or less before your class, then your class has not been canceled. We will always update the hotline at least one hour before the start of a class if it has been canceled–UNLESS there is sudden bad weather and it occurs less than one hour before your class. In that event, we’ll update it as soon as we make a decision. If your tennis class is rained out, you either may attend an equivalent-level class within the same session or the instructor will discuss a make-up with the participants at the next class after the rain out. The class will be made up if the majority of the participants agree that they can attend the make-up class at the time that is being offered. Before attending a make-up class, please call E-Town Tennis at 847-498-1360 to find out which classes are available and to notify the instructors. If you are unable to attend a make-up class within the same session, you will be given a credit for the missed class(es), which can be used toward the registration fee for the next tennis session.

Tennis Program Information For details about our tennis program, including tennis court use policies, court locations, prorating and make-up classes, and which level class is right for you or your child, please check the Tennis Program Information at www.cityofevanston.org/chandler or call 847-448-8252.

If your family has been approved for fee assistance, your portion of the fee must be paid in full before you (or your child) will be registered in the class.

Child Supervision/Pick-up Policies Parents/guardians are responsible for picking up children promptly at the time the program is scheduled to end. Instructors often have other programs to teach and can’t supervise children for an extended period after the program. Parents or guardians who pick up a child more than five minutes late from a program are assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute time period. For instance, if the program ends at 4pm and you arrive between 4:06 and 4:21, the late fee is $10. If you call and advise staff that you are running late, we’ll allow a 10-minute grace period, followed by the $10 per 15-minute late fee.

Rentals The City of Evanston rents rooms for meetings or parties (some with kitchen facilities), gymnasiums, auditoriums, ice rinks and the “lagoon” building, Sheridan Rd. at Church St. For info., call 311 (847-448-4311).
