FROM THE CURATOR The fifth annual 25 under 25 Art Award in 2016 is here for your viewing pleasure, bigger and better than ever. With 100 entries from West Australian artists aged 14 – 25 years old, the three respected judges deliberated and investigated, poked and prodded, debated and rallied to select a tightly wrought group of 25 talented and promising young artists. Through a mass of artistic energy and technical skills, this year’s exhibition presents a diversity of engaging and inspiring artworks. 25 under 25 isn’t just a pat on the back or a patronising praise, but rather celebrates the righteous successes and exploratory strengths of young local artists. The annual art award also offers them vital experience through a professional exhibition and exposure to the appreciative audiences of Fremantle.
The award invites young artists from across the state to showcase their work to the world, forming a snapshot of the next generation of artists and a glance into our state’s creative future. Bolstering this creativity is vital in continuing and enhancing our rich and lively community. The city’s commitment to support young and emerging artists is evident through this ongoing award. Along with the $2000 prize money, the artists are in the running for a four week artist residency and a portfolio mentorship through the renowned Fremantle Arts Centre. I feel sure this year’s finalists will step up into lifelong and rewarding art practices, sustained by engaged networks and invaluable opportunities generated through 25 under 25. FROM THE MAYOR From visual art and theatre, to music and street art, Fremantle has long been regarded as a home for emerging, young artists. You need to look no further than this year’s 25 under 25 Art Award to see that some of our most talented and undiscovered artists are honing their skills right here in Fremantle – and the City of Fremantle is delighted to celebrate them as part of one of WA’s prestigious youth art competitions. This year there are two highly sought after prizes – with the City’s highly regarded Fremantle Arts Centre offering an artist in residency position for first prize and a portfolio mentorship session for second; in addition to cash prizes for both winners. 100 entries were received across a range of artistic styles and ages, with the top 25 entries to be showcased at the City’s Moores Building Contemporary
Art Gallery for everyone to enjoy and admire – the way art should be. The award not only provides a unique platform for our budding creatives, but also for the general public who have the opportunity to purchase an original piece before it becomes a sought-after collector’s item. The City of Fremantle is committed to supporting and nurturing our talented young artists through a range of youth programs to ensure our local art industry has a bright and colourful future. Our young people are the future of Fremantle and the works you see in this exhibition may be the future great names in Australian fine art. I encourage you to visit Fremantle and see this emerging artistic talent for yourself – to support the local artists, our young people and the future of our art community. Dr Brad Pettitt Fremantle Mayor
