Mayor Asks You to Vote in Election • construction of sewer treatment plants and improvement of effluent water reuse systems ($40 million) • stadium and recreational facilities ($10 million) Mayor Jim Cavanaugh

September 7th is a very important day for all Goodyear citizens. On that day voters have the opportunity to determine our City’s future. Based upon the recommendation of a citizen’s committee, you are being asked to vote on 12 amendments that update the Goodyear City Charter which is like the state constitution -- it governs the way the city is run. You are also being asked to vote on the $134 million in bond authorization based on the recommendation of another citizen’s committee. These bonds would be issued and sold over the next several years for the following amenities: • parks and open space ($36 million) • fire protection ($7 million) • construction of public buildings such as City Hall and a Library ($27 million) • bridges and storm sewers and drainage ($14 million)

If you are a registered voter and have not yet voted early, I urge you to go to the polls and exercise your power to determine the future of your City’s development and governance. I’m pleased that so many of our local residents and business representatives are joining the mayors of Litchfield Park, Avondale,Tolleson and me for the 9th Annual Mayors’ Challenge Golf Tournament at Estrella Mountain Ranch

Golf Club. To date, this tournament has raised more than $100,000 to support the services and programs of the Tri-City West/Thornwood Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. School is back in session and children are walking to school throughout our neighborhoods. Please drive safely and pay close attention to school crosswalks. Many of you choose to drop off and pick up your children at school. We receive many complaints each year from people about traffic problems around schools that could be avoided if people park ONLY where allowable. We ask that you follow the traffic patterns and signs and remember that it is illegal to stop for anytime whatsoever in the school’s Fire Lane. Voting in Goodyear’s upcoming election, participating in a charity golf tournament to help boys and girls, and driving safely to protect our school children are some very important things all of`us can do to make Goodyear a better community. Thank you in advance for doing your share!

October 9th is G.A.I.N. Day in Goodyear. On that day there will be events planned by HOA’s and residents of several neighborhoods. Each one will be different and unique. It may be a BBQ or a potluck. But each event will have the common element of “community and friendship” where neighbors get acquainted with neighbors. When you know who lives around you, you are more likely to watch out for each other which results in safer and friendlier neighborhoods. For those of you who have moved here from other parts of the country, the event is similar to “National Night Out.” The following events are currently registered with the City of Goodyear. If you do not see one in your neighborhood, check the Goodyear website www.goodyearaz.gov -- in early September for any additional events. Arnold Manor - Manzanita Heights 11 am to 2 pm - Parque de Paz Canyon Trails - 1 to 4 pm - Desert Thunder School park Estrella Mountain Ranch - 11 am to 2 pm - South Lake Estrella Vista - 3 - 6 pm - Estrella Vista Swimming Pool/Park Wildflower Ranch - 4 to 7 pm - Wildflower School

Codey

Cowboy Codey Sez: Meet my newest pardner Cowboy John!

John Robinson has been hired to help me keep our city clean and beautiful. He joins Code Manager “Cowgirl Gail” Bosgieter. John has a background in investigations and inspections which is a great advantage for a Code Officer. John is looking forward to working with our residents by keeping them informed of all of our city codes. Now that Goodyear has two code compliance officers, someone will be in the neighborhoods every day of the week and weekends, too. So please give him a “big howdy” when you see him in your neighborhood! Page 3

Fill ‘Em Up! Did you know that our desert still only receives less than an inch of rain during the monsoon season? September is still hot, with an average temperature of 85 degrees at night, and high daytime temperatures over one hundred degrees. While it is hot and humid outside, keep cool and water wise inside. Running partial loads in your dishwasher and washing machine wastes water. By running full loads, you’ll maximize both your use of water and energy. Not running your clothes washer and dishwasher as often will also save you money on your electric bill, because both appliances send additional heat and humidity into the air, causing your air conditioner to run more often. If your clothes washer allows you to set the water level in your washing machine according to the amount of clothes you are washing, please do so. By maximizing the capacity of your appliances and running them less, in the long run you will be a winner all the way around.

Remember, saving water is everyone’s business and every drop counts!

Recycling Fast Facts

Each of us generates on average 4.4 pounds of waste per day per person. In a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage. This means that each adult will leave a legacy of 90,000 lbs. of trash for his or her children. (Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
