Volunteers are Making a Difference in Goodyear Gandhi once famously said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” That statement resonates each year in our city when hundreds of people step forward to donate their time and efforts as volunteers. In fact, last year volunteers donated nearly 37,000 hours to the city which equates to more than $860,000 in donated labor costs! Volunteers work side-by-side with city employees each day in nearly every department, assisting with everything from clerical duties at Goodyear City Hall to taking tickets at Goodyear Ballpark. Volunteers share their time, talent and passions to make our city a better place for everyone. If you’re interested in volunteering at the city, call 623-882-7807 or submit an application at

From the Mayor It is hard to believe that in just a few decades, more than 750,000 people may call Goodyear home.
Mayor Georgia Lord
The city of Goodyear is over 190 square miles of high quality neighborhoods, recreation, valued business partners, beautiful desert and traditional farming, with ample opportunities for development.
As we prepare for, and react to, growth, it is vital that we continue to align with the Goodyear 2025 General Plan. It represents our vision for growth and development, and was created by a citizen’s committee and approved by the voters in November 2014. By state law, the General Plan must be updated every ten years, and our residents and stakeholders will be tasked once again to develop a vision to set forth policies and action items for the approaching decade in just a few short years. Until the General Plan is revised, I encourage you to review our current vision, and in particular, the land use. Oftentimes there is a common misconception
about what control the City Council and I have over private property throughout the city. Much of the development and timing of construction is out of our control. The private property owner has the right to request rezoning, and develop and sell their land as they deem appropriate. However, it is our role to ensure the projects align with the city’s vision and meet our development standards and design guidelines. These standards are driven by the council’s priority of maintaining a high quality community for all of our residents and business partners. The zoning of the property defines the intended use of the land and a project can be developed without a public approval process, if it aligns with the current zoning. The city of Goodyear strives for transparency and posts the current development applications on the city website along with the staff member working on the application for any questions or input you may have. In addition, the Maricopa County Assessor’s website is a good tool to find zoning information for many parcels in the county. As we see the shape of our city changing before our eyes with the rapid growth, I am confident that the high quality of development in our city will remain the same. It is an exciting time in Goodyear and I can’t wait to see all the opportunities in our future.
Council Corner As you have probably heard and seen over the last couple months, the city of Goodyear is quickly becoming an advanced manufacturing and technological hub. Recently, major corporations have chosen Vice Mayor Wally Campbell the city of Goodyear, including United Parcel Service (UPS), Ball Corporation, Anderson Corporation and Chewy. They join companies like Amazon, REI and Macy’s - just to name a few. Several large technology companies have also recently selected the city as their new location which will create economic diversification while driving innovation and growth. These impressive long term investments in our city create jobs and generate tax revenue that can be used to support key services. Businesses are selecting Goodyear for many of the same reasons as our residents. The city of Goodyear is a quality
community that offers a strong commitment to public safety; robust investments in infrastructure; and great programs, parks and services. All these amenities are surrounded by the natural beauty that offers an amazing opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. We are excited about new companies joining the Goodyear community because it creates thousands of new jobs and more opportunities for our residents to work in the city in which they live. Additionally, the availability of new quality career opportunities will bring residential, retail, and entertainment growth. This contributes to a vibrant and growing community where residents can live, work and play. I am committed to a continued focus on building a clean, beautiful and safe city that offers residents amazing opportunities. Sustainable and smart economic growth, coupled with innovation, are vital for the continued success of our city, and I can’t wait to see what is next. March 2019

Jobs In Goodyear: On the Rise What will Goodyear look like in the next 10-20 years? If you could shape the future of our city, you might say more restaurants or shopping is most important. Or perhaps more housing or school options. No matter what the amenity, one important element brings it all together – jobs. Having a talented workforce brings new companies to our city. Those companies hire workers, which leads to more people living in Goodyear. More people leads to a greater demand for goods and services like shopping, restaurants, schools and places to live. And that leads to more companies wanting to invest in our city. It’s a cycle that’s happening at a rapid pace in Goodyear. At the heart of our city is a very skilled workforce, and several companies can’t wait to be a part of it all. Some big name companies at the top of that list include Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Sub-Zero, Amazon, and Macy’s Bloomingdales. And most recently, other companies who’ve decided to invest in Goodyear are Vantage Data Centers, Huhtamaki, United Parcel Service, Ball Corporation, Chewy.com, and Andersen Corporation. “Over the next five years, we anticipate creating more than 400 full time jobs in Goodyear, including hourly production and warehouse employees, as well as engineers, maintenance technicians and supervisors, “ said Jay Lund, Chairman and CEO of Andersen Corporation. He refers to Goodyear’s workforce as “robust.” In addition, the company says having access to major transportation routes and being close to customers and suppliers will be key to their success. In fact, the available workforce to our city within a 20 minute drive has increased more than 360 percent since the opening of the Loop 303. More potential workers leads to more companies who consider Goodyear an optimal location for business. There were more than 26,000* total jobs in Goodyear in 2018, and that number continues to grow. Part of that effort includes providing the kind of infrastructure certain companies need in order to set up shop. For example, several technology companies are interested in coming to Goodyear because of, in part, the city’s proximity to the National Fiber Network and high-powered electrical infrastructure. “There have been over 60,000 jobs created in the West Valley in the past four years,” said Chris Camacho, President & CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, an organization that aims to attract and grow business in our region. “We are one of the hottest markets in the United States for job growth, and we are certainly excited for Goodyear to be at the heart of it.” * Source: GPEC, EMSI occupation employment data 2018.4 – QCEW March 2019

She gets to go to work with him at the Chewy.com Goodyear fulfillment center. “Bringing Holly to work is fun for me, and team members love to see her and spoil her with attention.” Matt works close to home which allows him more time with his family. Aside from a short commute, he loves serving customers each day. “I really enjoy working with people that want to grow with Chewy. com, are passionate about their work, and put our customers first. Meet Michelle Thiry, Inspires Female Cyclists “Facing fear and rising above it is an awesome experience and I love seeing women and young girls do just that!” Michelle Thiry has lived in the West Valley her entire life. She traded in one dream job for another. She spent 27 years as a police sergeant, and now sells and fixes bikes. What she really loves about her work at Trek Bicycle Store in Goodyear – motivating women to have confidence in cycling. “You need to be focusing on your path to success and not ruminating on that thing that scares you. This is true in cycling and in life. I love telling women how scared I was on occasion both in cycling and police work, and then teaching them how to navigate right past fear.” Job perk: When she helps someone pick the perfect bike, and they tell her it “helps them feel like a kid again.”
Meet Memo Villa, General Manager “Saddle Mountain Brewing Company was the right opportunity for me at the perfect time to improve my quality of life.” Memo Villa loves his job. Memo’s work-life balance has definitely improved in the four years that he has worked in Goodyear. “It’s a three-minute car ride or 15-minute bike ride. It gives me a great sense of comfort to be so close to home. I love my pets, and they love it when I come home on breaks to feed them or let them out to play.” Job perk: Shift beers. Every employee of drinking age gets to enjoy a tasty craft beer at the end of every shift. It’s the owner’s way of thanking staff. March 2019

From Dreams to Reality:
Ruben Trujillo’s dream is finally coming true. It’s a dream he discovered while working as an apprentice in a coffee shop in South Korea in 2010. He wanted to open up his own coffee shop, but didn’t know how. “I wanted to serve coffee in a unique way, it’s my passion,” said Ruben, a Goodyear resident. He planned to open a brick and mortar coffee shop called Café Emporos. Struggling to get the business launched, he ended up at The InnovationHub @ Goodyear where he met with mentor, Darah Mann. The hub offers free resources, like one-on-one business mentoring. Darah connected Ruben with organizations and resources to advance his business knowledge and expand his brand. That knowledge triggered him to shift his focus to internet sales and local markets. “Meeting with my mentor has been a tremendous help. They’re dealing with our dreams and passions, and are able to give us a little nudge in the right direction,” said Ruben. Café Emporos now features hand-drip coffee satchels, cold brew pouches, coffee “tea-bags,” and most recently, roasted wholebean coffee. Rather than limiting himself to one coffee shop location, Ruben now specializes in on-the-go products and has adopted the tag line, “Make the World your Café.” In 2017, Darah recommended Ruben for the ASU Venture Devils program, by way of the “ASU Prepped” program. As part of the Venture Devils, Ruben met periodically with an ASU mentor to work towards presenting before a panel of potential investors. While unsuccessful in securing funding in 2018, Ruben kept at it. Eventually, he successfully pitched his brand to the same panel of investors, actually receiving more funding that he requested: $2,000 for equipment to mechanize his production, and included an additional $500 for marketing. “I was like wow, this is a real thing. You’re giving birth to your idea. You have this idea and it’s nothing at the beginning. You’re giving it form and materializing your thoughts and dreams. It’s kind of an amazing thing once you can do that,” said Ruben. He’s getting ready to head back to Korea this spring in an effort to take his business, international. In October 2018, the Goodyear Police Department selected Café Emporos as a featured business at their National Coffee with a Cop event. Café Emporos has also been featured in the West Valley View, Phoenix Business Journal, “The List,” and as a paid advertiser on ABC 15’s Sonoran Living.
