VISION ’S L I C N U O C

Over the past two years, we’ve worked hard to get the community involved by gathering input and encouraging feedback on the planning and design of the recreation campus. We spoke to and met with hundreds of residents, business groups and city commissions. This kind of engagement, along with the City Council’s vision, has created the ultimate Goodyear gathering spot. The Goodyear Recreation Campus is truly like no other. It offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure opportunities for all ages, abilities, and special interests in one location.

From the Mayor Making healthy choices has been a priority of mine from a young age, and I consider those choices to be a main contributor to my success, especially now at the age of 81! One of those healthy choices is my commitment to stay smoke-free and not risk the chance of addiction or harm to my body. According to the American Heart Association, vaping Mayor Georgia Lord went up by 78-percent for high school students and 48-percent for middle school students in 2018. This rise in popularity with our children is a tremendous concern of mine, as there are many health risks related to vaping, including potential harm to the lungs and a developing brain.

There’s so much credible information on the dangers of vaping at our fingertips. Do a quick search online and you’ll find information on what vaping is, what is being inhaled and the various styles of e-cigarettes. A study conducted by the University of Michigan, shows that some students weren’t even aware of what substance was used in the e-cigarette prior to using it. It is important for our community to understand that what has become trendy also carries tremendous risks. We must educate our younger, more curious generations. It is frightening how quickly vaping has become part of our culture today. It’s still not cool to smoke in school, and I hope we can convince our underage users to agree and choose a healthier lifestyle. There’s no doubt the beautiful Goodyear Recreation Campus opening in 2021 will help our youth and community as a whole be more active and healthy.

Council Corner In the early 2000s, shortly after completing a twoyear term as President of the California Association of Parks and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members, my husband and I moved to Goodyear. I Council Member Wally Campbell knew that the quickest way to get involved in my new community was to visit the recreation campus. Imagine my surprise when I contacted the city and was told Goodyear didn’t have a recreation campus. I believe that an important part of building a strong and sustainable community is offering parks and other amenities that encourage a healthy lifestyle. We must provide a great place to meet, connect and have fun. For many years, we have talked with our residents

about creating a space like this in our city, and I’m excited this dream is finally becoming a reality. This summer, the Goodyear City Council approved the design and construction and official name of the Goodyear Recreation Campus. When the Council was considering this investment for our residents, it was of the utmost importance that the recreation campus be inclusive and accessible to everyone. During each step of the process we made sure the design met the needs of our community, regardless of age and/or ability. I am so excited about the space that we have designed and the fun activity and community engagement it will inspire. This project has taken a long time to come to fruition, but it’s worth the wait. The Goodyear Recreation Campus is a gathering place for our residents to enjoy for generations. October 2019

Playground for All Ages and Abilities

Artistic Rendering

Kids will go bonkers for this playground! From rolling hills to multi-level play structures, the play area is meant for kids of all ages and abilities. There’s open turf to run or sit, a climbing wall, inverted slides, and a ramp to enter the playground structure for kids ages 5-12. The play area also has a dedicated spot for little ones ages 2-5. You’ll also find a unique swing in the shape of a circle, a zip-line, spinning amenities, musical components, and sensory panels.

Get ready for a new summer spot to cool off with the family. The outdoor aquatic center is broken into two sections: family play and lap swim. If you’re looking to swim a few laps, the 25-yard lap pool (high school competition size) is the perfect space. There’s also a family activity pool to burn off some energy. Adults and kids will be able to propel themselves down a 27’ slide, float in the lazy river in an inner tube, or kick water around in the splash play section.

Parking

goodyearaz.gov/InFocus

We didn’t forget about parking! The design team was very intentional when planning parking for the campus. Once you enter the park, there’s no need to cross any roads or worry about dodging vehicles, because parking is along the perimeter of the park. Over 600 spaces!

will soon take on a whole new meaning in Goodyear. The recreation campus has an abundance of outdoor space that can be used by families year-round. Wow Factor

The art plaza ties the artistic design elements together. It’s a gathering space with a 30-foot tall kinetic art sculpture. Made of independently moving arcs with different colored inlays, it projects vibrant colors onto the ground as it moves. The best part -- the interactive artwork moves with you! All you have to do is pull the attached poles to power the art piece to enjoy the dance of colored lights around the art plaza.

Artistic Rendering

Nothing was designed by accident. The windows in the recreation center are placed in certain spots to provide natural light and views of the campus park and the Estrella Mountains. Even the screen of perforated steel around the stairs is multi-functional. It looks good and it provides a barrier on the stairs for an extra layer of safety.

Artistic Rendering

Light, color and movement. These are the artistic design elements that play an integral part in the unique “wow factor” experience at the recreation campus.

“ The colors integrated into the rec campus were inspired by our breathtaking sunsets. The smooth,

multicolored metal finish on the outside of the building will actually vary in color depending on where

you’re standing and the angle of the sun. It’s truly a personalized experience for everyone.

Guylene Ozlanski, Goodyear Arts and Culture Administrator

Scenic Spot

Artistic Rendering

One of the best viewpoints in the house is located on the elevated walking/jogging track. As you take a lap around the track (ten laps = 1 mile), you’ll be able to see the gymnasium, fitness area, lobby, and teen area. To top it off, walkers and joggers will also get an amazing view of the Estrella Mountains through the windows.

Get Involved, Stay Safe

“The Goodyear Police Department is committed to community policing,” said Police Chief Jerry Geier. “The annual G.A.I.N. event is the perfect opportunity for our officers to meet with families and share the importance of getting involved in their neighborhood.”

For those of a certain generation, Gladys Kravitz from Bewitched conjures up memories of the classic “nosy neighbor” who knows everything about everyone. In today’s hectic world, it can be difficult to carve out time to meet your neighbors and know who lives on your street – but statistics show that the more we know our neighbors and the more familiar we are with our neighborhoods, the safer we are. Gladys was onto something!

Past events have typically included picnics, potlucks, games and neighborhood clean-ups. Each neighborhood can tailor an event to meet their specific goals; the focus is on getting to know your neighbors, building your community and promoting police/community partnerships to keep Goodyear safe throughout the entire year. So, get out and G.A.I.N. Goodyear! Find out if your neighborhood is celebrating G.A.I.N. at goodyearaz.gov/GAIN.

The city is once again participating in G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods), an annual event that aims to bring communities together and unite neighbors in their fight against crime. Goodyear neighborhoods are encouraged to organize their own community event to celebrate G.A.I.N. on Saturday, Oct. 26.
