From the Mayor We have certainly experienced unprecedented challenges in the first half of this year. I have been so encouraged by how quickly our city leaders have assessed the impacts of COVID-19 on our operations. We’ve been able to quickly adjust how we do business in an effort to protect our residents and staff while Mayor Georgia Lord continuing to provide critical services and exceptional customer service.
to ensure their wellbeing. Teachers and parents are working together to find new ways to continue the education of our children. Our businesses are partnering to serve the needs of the community, and our first responders and medical staff continue to work on the frontlines to selflessly take care of patients.
I am also encouraged by the fact that despite the pandemic, development activities in the city of Goodyear have not slowed. Interest in our city continues to build as new families and businesses discover Goodyear. We truly have a special community!
I could go on and on about the amazing ways in which so many have taken this opportunity to show compassion, exercise generosity, and take care of one another during this pandemic. These actions demonstrate the great spirit of our community and reminds us that together, we can overcome any challenge we may face — even when we must be physically apart.
Even as we’ve had to physically distance ourselves from one another, I’ve heard countless stories of people checking in on neighbors with phone calls and emails
Among the hardest working individuals are the unsung heroes who serve in important, but sometimes overlooked, roles. Facilities maintenance workers who ensure that hospitals and other public places are sanitized, truck drivers who keep the supply chain moving, and workers in the manufacturing industry who keep up the production of goods.
Council Corner
Councilmember Brannon Hampton
The city of Goodyear operates in accordance with core values. They serve as a foundation for all city functions and are incorporated into every aspect of how we operate. I believe in these ideals, and I am proud that we are a city dedicated to such strong values.
Not only do these values guide our actions as city government, but I believe they are characteristic of the outstanding residents, businesses and community that we represent. Never has this been more evident than now. The collective challenges of the pandemic have impacted every aspect of our lives, and we see the character of our community and core values in action every day. Statewide orders and social distancing guidelines have changed the paradigm for many operations. Goodyear businesses and entrepreneurs are resourceful and are reimagining operations to meet these new demands in an ever-changing world. We are adapting to demanding
circumstances and have created new ways of overcoming challenges. From families teaching at home to restaurants transforming to take-out only operations, our city has adapted to get things done. Despite the tireless efforts by our resourceful businesses and residents, we recognize that things have been tough. To help our community surmount these challenges, the city’s Economic Development Department has created a one-stop online website to help connect our businesses and residents with invaluable resources. These resources include information on federal paycheck protection loans and other CARES Act resources; business planning and reopening guidance; face covering posters and information; and resources on where to eat in Goodyear. Additionally, the city has obtained a grant to provide emergency water utility assistance for Goodyear residents impacted by the pandemic. In Goodyear, our values and character define our community – who we are, and what we do. There is a lot of work yet to be done, but we have a strong foundation and we will overcome these challenges together. August 2020

Supporting Our Healthcare Workers Food, notes and love: Goodyear rallies around essential workers
SHARE THE #GOODINGOODYEAR The Goodyear community continues to rally behind medical workers, doing everything it can to express its gratitude.
From food donations to handmade signs, both Abrazo West Campus and Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) have felt the community’s support.
“From the very beginning, the city has stepped forward,” said Christina Oh, Abrazo West Campus chief executive officer. “We have always had a really community-engaged culture here at Abrazo West Campus. We’ve never felt more loved and valued by the community than we do now.”
Goodyear restaurants including Booty’s Wings Burgers & Beer, Colado’s Coffee & Crepes, Enroute Coffee & Tea House, Jamba Juice, Jimmy John’s, KFC, Nothing Bundt Cakes, The Boyer Bakery, and more have delivered food and drinks to medical staff who often don’t have much time for sit-down meals. 4
goodyearaz.gov/InFocus
Even non-restaurants found ways to provide meals. Ball Corporation, one of Goodyear’s major employers, paid for food trucks to serve lunch outside of area hospitals. “Our employees felt we could have the biggest positive impact on the community by thanking our hospital workers and first responders,” said Chris McClanahan, Ball Corporation human resources manager. Residents, including kids, have also delivered handwritten messages and colorful drawings and notes to medical staff to remind them how much they are appreciated. “Thank you for making us a part of your family,” said Molly Stockley, CTCA Phoenix vice president of business development and hospital growth. “We feel your love, and we feel your encouragement, and we just can’t thank you enough for letting us be a part of your community and to serve you.”
Chalk Art Contest Inspires Hope Megan Kohler wanted to do something that would help her feel closer to her dad as he was being treated for COVID-19 at a local hospital. The perfect idea came to her and her daughter, Cadynn, after learning about Goodyear’s chalk art contest. It inspired the Kohlers to create messages of hope and appreciation on the sidewalk outside of the hospital where they often saw nurses and medical staff walking. Twelve-year-old Cadynn put her artistic ability to good use by creating colorful chalk art with messages such as “You matter” and “We rise by lifting others.”
“It was just our way of being positive to those taking care of him,” said Megan. “Even though he couldn’t see it, it was something we could do so that we could stay at the hospital longer and just be able to be near him.”

OPEN Local sign and printing companies continue to offer free services to support other local businesses. Many of the free signs hang outside restaurants and stores to increase awareness that the business is open. The city of Goodyear has adopted a temporary code to allow the signage during the pandemic. FASTSIGNS in Goodyear created and donated “Heroes Work Here” signs and banners that can be seen at Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

Learning New Skills to Help Others To slow the spread of COVID-19, residents and businesses are making protective face covers and shields – not for themselves, but for others. Osborne Jewelers was facing its own challenges early in the pandemic when it was forced to temporarily close its doors. During that time, owners Ken and Joanne Osborne, who is also a state representative, chose to give back to their community. They ordered and assembled hundreds of face shields with help from their staff to give to smaller, local organizations that did not have easy access to personal protective equipment.
“I’ve seen so many businesses, groups and organizations stepping up, checking on neighbors, picking up medicine and taking them food, and supplying great meals to hospital staff and our first responders,” said Representative Joanne Osborne. “That is what community is about, and it makes you feel good to know you are living in an area that does those things.” Megan Nixon, owner of Sweetly Unique Boutique, also found an opportunity to provide for others while teaching her kids about the value of giving back. She created a buy-a-mask, donate-a-mask program at her store. Customers can buy a hand-sewn mask, which then allows the boutique to donate a mask to a medical worker. Nixon’s kids are also assisting by cutting and sewing fabric pieces together.
“I like to help people because if they need it, why just stand back?” said Kaitlyn Nixon, Megan’s 13-year-old daughter.
It was a similar no-hesitation response to step up and help for Kathy Basaldua, owner of Haircutters in the Park. She’s no stranger to a sewing machine, so it was natural for her to spring into action to make face covers at no charge for friends, neighbors and strangers.
“I wanted to help out,” said Basaldua. “I have the tools and the know-how to make lined face coverings from fabric, so it makes sense to help in this way.” 6

The
of Choosing Local
All types of businesses are experiencing challenges during the pandemic. Locally-owned businesses have been hit especially hard. These are businesses that are owned and operated by people living in our community. They’re our neighbors. Local First Arizona is a statewide organization that connects and celebrates locally-owned businesses in order to build a more diverse and inclusive Arizona economy. Kimber Lanning, founder and director of Local First, shares how we can better support local businesses.
Q: A:
Q: A: Q: A:
Why is it important to support local businesses? Local businesses keep three times more money recirculating in the local economy. When you spend at a local business, the dollars stay in the community and recirculate. When you choose to support a local business, they, in turn, are hiring other local businesses, graphic designers, or website developers, and that keeps more dollars and jobs here in Arizona. It’s important to think of it as every dollar essentially sits silent in your pocket until you choose to spend it, and then you are voting for the type of community that you want to see. How can we better support local businesses? I think just pausing and doing your research. A lot of times people don’t realize that there may be a local alternative to a big chain, and we also need to defeat the myth that the big chain is always cheaper. Why is it even more important now to support local businesses? Sometimes one local business can support an entire family. When they were shut down for several months in this pandemic, it placed that entire family in financial jeopardy. It’s critically important to understand that when you dip into losses at the local business level, that means you could have a family that is at risk of losing their home, as opposed to a corporation that dips into losses and has enough strength to carry on its loss into the next year where they can recoup some of those losses.

Students Help Fill the Food Bank Shelves Don’t underestimate what some of the youngest Goodyear residents are willing to do for others. Area food banks rely heavily on community food drives, like those done by schools across the Valley, so when schools closed, local students stepped up to fill the shelves.
Local school districts and students from six schools teamed up with the Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek and PebbleCreek’s Kare Bears club to collect canned food in a community-wide food drive effort.
BETTER
“Our students are really good about pitching in and contributing to the community all the time, but we suspected that they were really going to come through at this time when our community is
in crisis,” said Shelly Hornback, director of community relations for the Litchfield Elementary School District. “We’re so proud of all the kids who pitched in, and really thankful for their leadership.” Millie Moran, a Millennium High School student, was one of those who stepped up to distribute small posters throughout her neighborhood, asking Goodyear residents to drop off any canned food they could spare at her home. “We weren’t expecting as many donations, and we got so much food,” said Moran. “It was really surprising to see that during this time, people were willing to pitch in so much more than we expected.” The drive brought in 4,500 pounds of food and $3,100 for the Agua Fria Food and Clothing Bank.
Opening a restaurant is always challenging. Opening a restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic is even more so. So, when Henry’s Hawaiian Grill opened in March, Taco Redempcion, which is located next door, decided to team up with its new neighbors. The two restaurants created a $45 Family Feast Special that included food from both restaurants. “I just empathize with them, because I know what it was like when we opened,” said Taco Redempcion owner Tina Beatty. “We actually made it so you’d pick up half of your dinner here and half there, so it was an opportunity to meet the owners of both restaurants.” “It helped us a lot,” said Henry’s Hawaiian Grill owner Henry Tran. “We tried to do something together to make people happy.” The cross-promotion was so successful that the neighboring restaurants have extended their partnership. The Family Feast Special is now available on the first Thursday of each month. “Goodyear turned out,” Beatty said. “We’re in this great community that supports small business owners, and they showed that.” 8
