From the Mayor Spring Training in Goodyear

O

ne of our city’s most valued community assets is the beautiful Goodyear Ballpark! While the ballpark is utilized year-round for a variety of fabulous community events and activities, I especially look forward to the spring training season. The familiar sights, sounds, and smells of spring training bring so many West Valley families and baseball Mayor fans from across the country Georgia Lord such joy, and we are especially fortunate to host two outstanding Cactus League teams right here in Goodyear. As the spring training season commences, and the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds take the field, I encourage you to visit the Goodyear Ballpark for a game, and to enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes with your friends, family, and neighbors all season long!

Council Corner

W

hen you think of the Goodyear Ballpark, I imagine the first thing you think of is spring training. As a councilmember, when I think of the ballpark, I see a community asset.

Throughout the year, we receive updates on various events that take Council Member place there, and I am appreciative of Bill Stipp the fact that the city has a gathering place for all of us to enjoy. Unlike other cities across the Valley, the city of Goodyear owns the entire complex and has the opportunity to host city festivities and to partner with third parties to bring entertainment options to you throughout the year. Over the last year, the ballpark was a host to more than 70 events, not including the spring training season. From the “Food Truck Round Up” and “Relay for Life,” to Little League tournaments and high school graduations, the ballpark serves as a key community gathering place. We often overlook the opportunities that come along with owning the ballpark and the economic value we gain when visitors come to Goodyear. More than 450 regional and National League baseball teams – accompanied by their families, friends and fans – come to Goodyear on an annual basis to utilize the facility as part of tournaments outside of the season. This type of economic impact benefits the city as a whole and will continue to increase our revenues to offset the operating costs. I not only look forward to what the future will bring, but I also hope to see all of you at a ballpark event throughout the year. February 2018

Year-round Impact by Amy Bolton and Debbie Diveney

T

he buzz of activity at Goodyear Ballpark is not limited to the spring training season. In this article, we go behind the scenes to see the many ways major league teams and ballpark staff make an impact in the community throughout the entire year.

One Season Ends, Another Begins

Community Causes

“It’s a continuous cycle, really,” says Debbie Diveney, business operations and marketing coordinator. She’s referring to what it takes to be part of the small but mighty team that runs the city’s largest venue - Goodyear Ballpark. “Even before the current spring training season is over, we’re already hard at work designing the best Cactus League fan experience for the coming season,” says Debbie. “If we see something that we can make better, we say ‘Hey-wait-stop! Let’s write that down for next year.’ So we have this constant dialogue about how to continuously improve the feelings people get from spending time at Goodyear Ballpark.”

Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, the two home teams of the Goodyear Ballpark, are generous year-round partners to the local Arizona community. Prior to the start of each spring training season, the Reds and the Indians partner to host an annual celebrity charity golf tournament in the Estrella community. This year, $47,336 was raised to benefit the H.O.P.E. Team, a nonprofit organization that supports patients of Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Goodyear. Through the teams’ annual charity game, an additional $32,346 was raised for New Life Center, a Goodyearbased organization dedicated to providing emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. And Homeless Youth Connection received a donation of $32,346 to support its mission of meeting the needs of youth experiencing homelessness so they can stay in school and graduate.

Imagine the awe of a young child walking through the gates and seeing the huge, bright green field off in the distance and the joy she feels when she gets to run around before watching a movie on the big screen. Think about the feeling of accomplishment that a super-fan gets when he has finally saved enough to fund a trip to follow his hometown team from the snow in Ohio to the warm sunshine of Arizona. Put yourself in the shoes of the high school graduate who walks across the stage in cap and gown receiving her diploma knowing a world of possibilities is at her fingertips. These are just a handful of the ways people enjoy Goodyear Ballpark. When there isn’t a movie, baseball game, graduation or festival happening at Goodyear Ballpark, the staff and teams can be found around the city contributing to community causes and engaging local schools. 6

goodyearaz.gov/InFocus

Another way the ballpark and teams help facilitate charitable contributions is through the ‘Round Up for Charity’ program that is administered through the team shop. Patrons who chose to round up their transaction to the nearest whole dollar were able to collectively raise $7,647 that went directly to the Southwest Valley YMCA. These efforts provided $119,675 to local organizations offering services to our neighbors in need in the Southwest Valley. Yet the positive ways in which having Goodyear Ballpark in our city doesn’t end there. Players make appearances all throughout the year to bring cheer to people in hospitals; they encourage kids in school; they spend time helping local food banks; have been on hand to help donate and wrap Christmas gifts for needy families in Goodyear; and build playground equipment.

Did you know . . .

Home Run Readers Nearly 20,000 local students are able to participate in this free, incentive-based program each school year. The goal is to encourage independent reading by students in grades pre-K to 8. The reward? Two tickets to a spring training game, of course!

Kids Draw the Lineup

The fun circles back to game day when young fans are challenged to draw their favorite baseball player. The whole crowd is entertained when the drawings are broadcast to the whole stadium as the lineup is announced. Even the players get a big kick out of seeing their likeness through the eyes of the budding artists. A lucky young fan is chosen, based on the awesomeness of the drawing, to meet the player he or she drew. “The players really have a lot of fun engaging with the kids,” says Debbie. “We always have a great time going through the drawings and then watching fans’ reactions as we go through the lineup.” So next time you drive by Goodyear Ballpark, know that while the beloved venue is an asset to the community, what it represents and how it helps bring people together all year long to make memories is the real magic. Be sure to make your own memories this year by catching a game, movie, or festival!

Cassie Tomasello (right) assists with the big wheel race, a game day between-inning promotion.

Launching a Career at Goodyear Ballpark by Amy Bolton

I

t’s game day and enthusiastic fans are filling seats to see the players take the field. Ask anyone what their favorite part of spring training is, and chances are, it’s fun activities and promotions just as much as the game itself. A group of very talented people at Goodyear Ballpark work behind the scenes to design exciting fan experiences, and each year, sports management/marketing interns from across the country compete to make it happen at Goodyear Ballpark.

A Major Sports Fan from Florida Cassie describes herself as a “major sports fan,” so it was no surprise she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from the University of Florida. Before she graduated and landed an incredible job in Raleigh, N.C., Cassie’s path took her through Goodyear, where she spent a semester as a sports marketing intern at Goodyear Ballpark. What she initially thought would be a great opportunity to combine her love for baseball with her passion for marketing, promotions, and community involvement quickly became so 8

much more. “I was surprised by how fast and easily I fell in love with Goodyear Ballpark and the state of Arizona,” Cassie reflects. “Being from Florida, it was a completely different environment from what I’d been used to. I was also given a lot of responsibility and freedom in my internship, which really helped me grow as a professional.” Cassie’s favorite part of her Goodyear experience was learning the behind-the-scenes work that goes into putting on a great show for the fans. “You don’t think about it, but a lot of time is put in each day writing scripts, picking out music, and planning in-game promotions,” Cassie said. The skills helped Cassie land her first career position with the Carolina Mudcats as the promotions assistant. From there, she was promoted to her current role as the community relations coordinator. When asked what advice she might have for someone considering a career in sports marketing, Cassie said, “I would absolutely encourage them to do it. This is a time in your life where you have the opportunity to explore your passions and travel to new places. Take every opportunity presented to you because you never know where it will lead.”

Reflecting back on her experience, Cassie says that her internship with Goodyear Ballpark “set the foundation for my career moving forward. I took small tidbits of inspiration from each person I worked with…to create the professional I am today.” Cassie says that she is fortunate. “Having the opportunity to work with professionals from Major League Baseball teams was something I will always cherish. I can honestly say that my internship with Goodyear Ballpark was one of the best experiences of my life. Not everybody gets to say their office is a professional ballpark and that’s pretty special.”

management staff, and we were given major responsibilities,” Emily says. “I really appreciated this, because it gave me the opportunity to manage other staff and grow my leadership capabilities.”

Mastering Sports Marketing in Virginia

As she pursues her goal of working in an upper level marketing position in professional baseball, Emily encourages others thinking about this career path: “DO IT! And give it your all. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.” As for her time in Arizona, Emily is not shy about sharing her love for the people who helped launch her career. “Goodyear Ballpark is a great organization to work for, and the people care about you and want you to succeed. Debbie and Bruce are both willing to give their all to help you. I’m thankful and still consider both friends.”

Emily graduated in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. and now she’s pursuing her Master’s in Sport Marketing from Blacksburg, VA. Motivated by her deep love of baseball, Emily pursued the Goodyear Ballpark spring training internship because it offered the opportunity to work in a Major League Baseball setting, but at a smaller scale. “I was shocked by how much responsibility the interns were given. We were treated as regular, full-time

From working the Cactus League Luncheon and test-driving the fan experience packages for a commercial, to playing photographer for the ‘Draw the Lineup’ winner meeting Francisco Lindor, Emily’s internship at Goodyear Ballpark gave her so many special memories – and practical experience.

Emily Almond poses for a photo with volunteer Pete La Rowe as she presents him with his Volunteer of the Game certificate.

Each year, Goodyear Ballpark offers a limited number of spring internships for students pursuing a sports management or related degree. Internship positions are posted in September for the upcoming spring training season through teamworkonline.com. February 2018
