2022 ANNUAL REPORT

CELEBRATING YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2022, the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) demonstrated remarkable dedication and achieved significant milestones in connecting the youth community with the city’s decision-making processes. The YAC provided a platform for young voices to be heard and valued, contributing to the city’s growth and development.

Throughout the year, YAC members participated in various initiatives, community discussions, and advocacy efforts, enriching the lives of many in Grande Prairie. Their passion and commitment to civic duty fostered a sense of unity and purpose among the youth, promoting a forward-thinking community.

The YAC greatly values the opportunity to work alongside City Council members who regularly attend their meetings. This ongoing partnership has shown

the youth that their contributions are recognized and valued, reinforcing their dedication to civic engagement. The YAC’s unwavering commitment to civic engagement and their ability to inspire others have set a high standard of excellence. Their efforts in 2022 have not only benefited the youth but also the broader community of Grande Prairie.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL MANDATE

To provide an effective link between community boards and committees, City Council, community agencies and Grande Prairie youth.

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) provides an opportunity for youth to have input by engaging in community discussions around important events, policies, economic changes, infrastructure, etc. Members are encouraged to provide their input and seek opinions of their peer and the youth community on important issues.

HIGHLIGHTS

YAC members completed 3 engagement opportunities with the City of Grande Prairie, welcomed 3 delegations to their meetings, and attended 5 local events.

YAC Chair Grace Larson participated as a speaker-panelist during the Youth Leadership Summit held on November 5, 2022.

YAC members Anella De Rueda and Janee Chamberlain participated in on-air interviews with Eastlink TV regarding their experiences with the Youth Advisory Council.

YAC promoted a unique opportunity with Alberta Ballet for youth to access free ballet classes, including sessions especially for teens.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS, ROLES & TERM WORK

The 2022-2023 YAC members were between the ages of 14 to 24. Members represent their experiences as secondary school students, post-secondary students, youth in the workforce, community volunteers, advocates, allies, artists, musicians, athletes, and leaders.
