Geraldton is located 420 kilometres north of Western Australia’s capital Perth by road and 373km by air. It is the largest regional city north of Perth and is a regional capital. Situated right on the coast, Geraldton is the central hub of Australia’s Coral Coast. Many base themselves in Geraldton to lose themselves in nature’s wonderland with the stunning Houtman Abrolhos Islands, iconic Pink Lake, rugged Kalbarri Gorges and Wildflower Country all at its doorstep.

Geraldton is just a quick one-hour flight from Perth! The Geraldton Airport is situated approximately 10km east of Geraldton on the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road with Qantas offering daily flights from Perth to Geraldton. Taxis are available to take you to your accommodation. Flying into Geraldton and need a car? There are a selection of hire car companies operating from Geraldton Airport.
BY ROAD
Geraldton is a four-hour drive from Perth with two main direct routes. Both the scenic Indian Ocean Drive and Brand Highway are available via coach or by self-drive. Integrity Coach Lines operate services from Perth to Broome and TransWA offer bus services from Perth to Kalbarri.

THE ESPLANADE
Located at the southern end of the Geraldton Foreshore, the Esplanade offers views of the City, Port, Champion Bay and Moresby Ranges from a 360-degree viewing platform. The area includes walkways, binoculars, and interpretive signage. Popular for a walk, sunsets, fishing and photography, or spotting a dolphin or sea lion!
CHAPMAN RIVER REGIONAL PARK
Close to the heart of Geraldton lays a place of natural beauty. Chapman River with its native flowering plants, birds, reptiles and wildlife is framed by sweeping vistas from the Moresby Ranges out across the Indian Ocean. Walk or cycle around estuarine salt marsh where it is easy to forget you are in a city!
GREATER GERALDTON CBD HERITAGE WALK TRAILS
Enjoy the scenery and stroll amongst the Norfolk Pines which grace the streets of old Geraldton, as you learn more about the fascinating history of Champion Bay. The Heritage CBD Walk Trails feature six easy routes which include the Waterfront, Marine Terrace, Rocks Laneway, West End, Victoria Hospital and Bluff Point. All trails suit the majority of fitness and experience levels, with footpaths and wheelchair access along all trails.
MULLEWA DRIVES AND WALK TRAILS
Situated 100km east of Geraldton is the township of Mullewa that comes alive during wildflower season. There are three drive trails - the Northern Loop, Southern Circuit and Old Stock Route Drive Trail. Discover the township, history and culture of Mullewa on five walking trails on offer that range from 590 metres to just under 3kms.
YAMAJI DRIVE TRAIL
From Mass Rock in Mullewa, to the picturesque Ellendale Pool in Walkaway and the Ilgarijiri (Things Belonging To The Sky), which is an interpretation of works by Margaret Whitehurst and Barbara Merritt on Geraldton Foreshore (pictured above), this drive trail celebrates the culture and history of the Yamatji Peoples.
WAR YEARS DRIVE TRAIL
Geraldton has played an active role throughout many of the conflicts Australia has engaged in. Learn all about this fascinating history on this 200km tourist walk/drive trail.
GREENOUGH RIVER NATURE WALK TRAIL
This beautiful nature walk trail is suitable for walking and mountain biking. Enjoy the landscape and birdlife on this 17km circular track. The commencement and car park are approximately 500m along Greenough River Road.
MONSIGNOR HAWES HERITAGE TRAIL ( MULTI DAY )
Monsignor John Hawes was a priest and architect who designed and built many inspirational churches and other buildings in Western Australia’s Midwest between 1915 and 1939. The Hawes Heritage Trail takes you on a journey to the buildings he created where you will discover the fascinating story of his life and work. From Northampton, Mullewa, Kojarena, Yalgoo to Morawa, Perenjori, Mingenew, Dongara and Geraldton. The multi-day trail takes you through diverse landscapes ranging from stunning beaches to the edges of the outback and colourful spring wildflowers.

HOUTMAN ABROLHOS ISLANDS
GETTING THERE
FLY
All year round flying to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands is a spectacular adventure. Take in the views of Geraldton before heading over the Indian Ocean keeping your eye out for cargo boats, fishing vessels, sharks and migrating whales (seasonal). Enjoy a flight over the Houtman Abrolhos Islands before landing on East Wallabi. On your trip home, see where the Batavia was shipwrecked. Both Geraldton Air Charter and Shine Aviation offer great experiences.
CRUISE/FERRY
The Abrolhos Islands can be accessed for day trips on board the fast ferry MV2000 through Abrolhos Adventures. Alternatively, if you want take your time; enjoy a five day Abrolhos Islands Tour, February to May & September & October each year with the Eco Abrolhos.
CHARTER
Famous for its baldchin groper and crayfish, fishing and pot pull charters are available from a range of local operators.
CAN’T MAKE IT?
If you can’t make it to the Islands be sure to immerse yourself in the story of the Abrolhos. Head to the Museum of Geraldton and learn about the Batavia or visit Batavia Park featuring the Wiebbe Hayes Statue.
Weigh anchor at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands – located approximately 60km off the Geraldton coast, the Islands comprise three major island groups, the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert Groups stretching from north to south across 100 kilometres of ocean.

THE BATAVIA
In 1629 the Batavia was shipwrecked on Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group. Commander Francisco Pelsaert and select crew set off in the ship’s longboat to seek help and those left endured one of the most horrific mutinies in history.
SHIPWRECKS
According to the Australian National Shipwreck Database there are 52 shipwrecks recorded off the Abrolhos Islands from the sailing vessel Batavia in 1629 to the Southern Cross trawler in 1971.
SNORKEL OR DIVE
Coral reefs, sea life, and the warm waters of the Leeuwin Current make for fantastic snorkelling and diving. The Batavia shipwreck lies in shallow waters and is ‘the’ number one dive spot in Western Australia.
PEARLS
The pearls cultivated from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands are becoming increasingly popular. From the Akoya to the Black Lipped Pearl and a variety of colours in between.
LOBSTER
A sought after delicacy, the waters around the Abrolhos are an important breeding site for the Western Rock Lobster.
FISHING
Recreational fishing is permitted around the Islands within allocated seasons. For regulations and licenses please contact the Department of Fisheries.
MAMMALS, BIRDS, REPTILES, SEALIFE AND FLORA
The Houtman Abrolhos Islands mark the northern most habitats of the Australian sea lion. Other mammals include the tammar wallaby, bush rat, dolphins and migrating whales. The Islands are among Australia’s most important sites for breeding seabirds such as the noddies, shearwaters and terns. There are 26 terrestrial species of reptiles, many endemic to the Abrolhos including skinks, geckos, snakes and green sea turtles. There is also an abundance of sea life including fish and shark species, coral, seagrasses and more. Finally there are over 140 species of native flora on the Islands and all are classified as protected.

KALBARRI NATIONAL PARK
Kalbarri National Park is home to breathtaking coastal cliffs and deep river gorges. The National Park has roughly 800 species of native flora, many of which are endemic, including the coveted Kalbarri spider orchid. Don’t forget the Coastal Cliffs, where the walkways and trails are lit up with colour.
NORTHAMPTON
Take a walk in Geraldton’s Chapman River Regional Park, home to flowers, birds and reptiles. Contact the Geraldton Visitor Centre for the weekend guided walks schedule.
Just north of Geraldton is Chapman Valley and Yuna where wildflowers and everlastings abound on the roadside. If travelling on the weekend, stop into Nanson, visit the Burnt Barrel for a gourmet outback barbecue and handcrafted beer.
Heading north to Kalbarri? Make sure to stop at Northampton’s Elephant Lookout to see the wild orchids at Oakabella Homestead.
MULLEWA AND MINGENEW
Head to Mingenew and Mullewa for an abundance of wildflowers including everlastings, orchids, and bush flowers. In Mullewa, there are several walk trails and self-drive trails to explore, where you will learn about the history of the area and see a variety of wildflowers along the way. Coleseam Conservation Park, 50km south of Mullewa, is a wildflower “must-do” and is famous for it’s carpets of flowers. The rare and unique Wreath Flowers, 40km east of Mullewa at Pindar, should also be on your to-do list. For the best and most current wildflower hotspots, ask the locals and pop into Visitor Centre.

Geraldton is a popular destination for families, and it’s no wonder why with the countless things to see and do!
The Geraldton Foreshore has a range of playgrounds and walkways to let the kids run wild on as well as the state of the art Youth Precinct that provides hours and hours of entertainment.
Just up the road lays the recently opened Beresford Foreshore, which sports a playground reminiscent of the Pirates of the Caribbean set.
The public open space also has a range of barbecues and outdoor facilities, making it one of the best places to take the family and enjoy what Geraldton has to offer.
The City of Greater Geraldton’s School Holiday Program is always a hit during the school break and includes everything from SUP yoga, video games,
beach volleyball, arts, craft, and fun educational workshops at the Museum of Geraldton.
WATERPARK AND PLAYGROUND
Right in the heart of the Geraldton Foreshore is the popular Waterpark and Playground. The kids will have a ball of fun running through the varying fountains of water. There’s also a fully fenced toddler area as well as a space for the bigger kids. The waterpark and playground is free and is right next to the beautiful Indian Ocean and Geraldton’s vibrant café scene.
GREENOUGH WILDLIFE AND BIRD PARK
Say hello to the resident kangaroos, pat a dingo, see a crocodile up close, hold a snake and see the other wonderful animals that call the Greenough Wildlife and Bird Park home.
PUMP AND JUMP TRACK
Take the kids to Geraldton’s newest attraction and let them burn off some energy on their bike or scooter at the Pump and Jump Track in Spalding Park. There is also a mountain bike skills track and an 11km loop trail that sits just near the Chapman River and is suitable for all ages and skill levels.
SUN CITY CAFÉ & FUN CITY INDOOR PLAYGROUND
A great place to let the kids burn off some energy while the parents recharge over a coffee. The huge play centre has slides, ball pits, trampolines as well as age appropriate sections.
MINIATURE RAILWAY
Ride a variety of locos along a 1,200 metre outdoor ride-on-track. The Miniature Railway runs at
Spalding Park on the first Sunday of each month. Fees apply. Passengers must wear fully enclosed shoes for rides.
AQUARENA
As Geraldton’s premier Aquatic Centre, the Aquarena is a multi-purpose swimming facility offering a huge range of activities and services. With an indoor and outdoor component, the facility includes a 25m heated pool, an indoor leisure pool, hydrotherapy pool and 50m outdoor pool.
To keep the kids entertained there is a water slide and dependant on timing – there is inflatables and a Tarzan rope.
Along with a great range of group fitness classes and swimming lessons, you will also find a beach volleyball court, free barbecues with lawn areas, shade sails and more.

For lovers of the written and spoken word, various events for all ages, organised by the Geraldton Regional Library.
Marking the 82nd anniversary since the sinking of HMAS Sydney II and the legacy of Australia’s attractions greatest naval tragedy.
A biennial prize which is open to all artists residing in WA, held at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.
Marine Terrace, Geraldton, is transformed into a hub of celebrations complete with market stalls, live music, entertainment and food.

100km east of Geraldton, Mullewa is home to the rich history of the Southern Yamaji Peoples, early pioneers, Monsignor Hawes, as well as the spectacular wildflowers. WILDFLOWERS
Mullewa is famous for its wildflowers! Hundreds of species bloom between late July and October with people coming from all over the world to take in the amazing carpets of colour.

OUR LADY OF MT CARMEL CHURCH
Opening in 1927, this church was designed and built by Monsignor Hawes with the help of local residents. The site includes a WWI Memorial also designed by Hawes.
MONSIGNOR HAWES PRIEST HOUSE MUSEUM
Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church and the Priest House Museum is open for tours during wildflower season from 10:30am – 12:30pm. During the rest of the year, it may be visited on request subject to the availability of volunteers. Please contact the Mullewa CRC ahead of your visit to arrange a tour.

Held over the West Australia Day long weekend (late May/early June) this rodeo just keeps getting bigger with ‘the biggest prize money in the west’, the Beaut Ute and Whip Crackin’ Competitions and a Country Music Concert.

MULLEWA SCENIC LOOKOUT
The lookout gives a panoramic view of the town and surrounding bush. Learn about local history from the interpretive signage. Access by vehicle with plenty of room for caravans and enjoy the 2.3km loop known as the Mullewa Bushland Trail.
GREENOUGH & WALKAWAY
Immerse yourself in history at the Greenough Museum and Gardens then take a photo at the Leaning Tree.
LEANING TREE
Buffeted by the salt laden winds the local eucalyptus trees have grown horizontally and become an icon of the region. Parking off the Brand Highway available.
WIND FARMS
Dozens of turbines reaching 78 metres high scatter the landscape of Western Australia’s largest renewable energy generator. Discover more through the interpretive signage available at the viewing area.
BOOTENAL SPRING
Interpretive signage at the this freshwater spring reflects on the conflict between the early settlers and the Aboriginal people that occurred on the Greenough Flats.
ELLENDALE POOL
This scenic waterhole is surrounded by giant gum trees and a rocky gorge, and is watched over by Bimarra the Serpent who rests underneath the magnificent cliff face. Interpretive signs celebrate the importance the pool has played in Aboriginal and European history and is the ideal picnic or camping location, fees apply.
WALKAWAY STATION MUSEUM
An impressive museum for any rail enthusiast or historian. First opened in 1888, this place played a vital role in the connection of the Midland Railway Company railway line to Midland and the Western Australian Government Railways line to Geraldton.
GREENOUGH WILDLIFE AND BIRD PARK
This park has been rescuing and rehabilitating Australian wildlife for over 30 years. Animals at the park include kangaroos, emus, crocodile, dingos and an array of reptile and birdlife. Admission costs apply. Located 449 Company Road, Greenough.
GREENOUGH MUSEUM AND GARDENS
This eco-museum is much more than your traditional museum. Set in the 19th century former Maley family homestead, enjoy its community garden, historic trees and interactive displays, this place is full of surprises. Admission costs apply. Located 11 Phillips Rd (off Brand Hwy).
CENTRAL GREENOUGH HISTORIC SETTLEMENT
The buildings of Central Greenough were constructed between 1863 and 1913 and provide a rare insight into the early settlement of agricultural lands. Stroll through the settlement at your leisure using the brochure as your guide.
PIONEER CEMETERIES
A walk trail at Greenough Pioneer Cemetery takes you through stories from the past. Other historic burial grounds include the Old Walkaway Cemetery and Bootenal Cemetery.
DEVLIN POOL
Devlin Pool is popular for nature enthusiasts and a peaceful spot to paddle a canoe, try your hand at fishing or to relax at the gazebo.

The Sacred Heart Convent and St Mary’s in Ara Colei are two examples in Northampton of Monsignor Hawes architectural design. If you have time, visit Hutt Lagoon – the Pink Lake – and the historic ruins of the Lynton Convict Hiring Station, just under 50km east of Northampton
5.00pm Time to make your way back to Geraldton but why not stop along the way into Coronation Beach, just 8km off the highway it is a beautiful coastal setting famous for kite-surfing

9.30am Head up to the Mullewa Scenic Lookout to walk the Bushland Trail, or explore the Wildflower Walk on the other side of town.
10:30am Did you know Mullewa has it’s own slice of European inspired architecture? To learn about the amazing man who built Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, walk the 600m interpretative trail starting from the Mullewa CRC.
11.30am Pack your lunch, enjoy a meal at Inspirations Motel or purchase from Liberty Service Station, then hop in the car to do one of our two self-drive trails – the Northern Loop or Southern Circuit. Some lovely spots to explore along the way including the Mullewa Waterfalls, Tenindewa or Coleseam Conservation Park.

Geraldton is an official RV friendly city! Strategically located in the CBD, the Francis Street carpark provides ample room for RVs of all shapes and sizes. Travellers will love how central they are – close to the shopping districts and centres as well as the Geraldton Foreshore and an abundance of eateries.
Point Moore Carpark - The Point Moore carpark has six RV overnight parking bays available, as well as access to a BBQ and ablutions. Drummond Cove Batten Hall - The Batten Hall carpark has five overnight RV parking bays, as well as as well as access to a BBQ and ablutions. Carpark Three is within a minute’s walk of the Geraldton Visitor Centre which is located at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery at 24 Chapman Road, Geraldton.
