Feedback from Maria Flavel, local author:
I enjoyed the Memoir Writing Class immensely. Loraine is knowledgeable and provides encouragement to start the journey of becoming an author. My fellow students told their stories well and it was very positive sharing our experiences, I met new people and learned about other people’s families and their histories. It wonderful that budding writers can continue their writing
at the monthly workshops at the library.
Writing opens so many doors, whether it’s for yourself, your family or for a wider audience, writing can bring great pleasure. I always loved telling stories and it has brought me joy to share my ideas and help raise money for the Sudanese Charity – Athiolget Women’s and Children’s Health Assoc. Inc. through the sale of my five books. Be brave and give writing a try, you might have a gift.
Snippets of My Life
with Bobbi Fawcett
There was a curious girl who loved to read, play, explore and who never wanted to go home. She had a hearty appetite for sport and the great outdoors. Her escape to independence was via the Navy. Then a colourful suite of jobs took her to Sydney, Cairns and Karumba before almost four decades abroad.
In her 30s she sailed across the Atlantic from South Africa to the Caribbean in a 32ft ferra cement boat. Armed with a Captains Licence she sailed through the next decade hosting paying guests aboard a 50ft, then a 62ft monohull, one week at a time. Hiking, diving, dancing, and culinary delights.
After jumping ship in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), and finding no prince charming available, she rescued herself from sardines on toast via media sales. As an independent contractor to several companies concurrently, she survived another 20 years, until Cyclone Irma in 2017. No-one was buying advertising then; they were buying duct tape and timber. Meanwhile a seasonal job as a weighbridge wench in Mullewa filled her purse. Returning to the BVI, she became a regular
9-5 employee selling term charters via phone and email.
Permanently relocating to Geraldton, she joined QEII. Previously, on annual visits she accompanied her mother, a member since 2013, to play Scrabble. Now there is pickle ball, painting and so many options - we are spoilt for choice at QEII.
The curious girl is happy to be home, almost two years now.
In her explorations to about 80 countries, one adventure was a memorable motorbike trip around the Baltic Sea, that was 13 countries! Still active, she reads for entertainment, brainfood and historically researching for speeches to become a Distinguished Toastmaster. A kookaburra told me she would like to explore more, taking a fresh look at WA and the Land of Oz.

Hi to you all, these months seem to be flying along. Just letting you all know that our dear colleague Anne is recovering from a medical procedure that she had undertaken recently, we wish her a speedy recovery. During the month of October, we covered a few topics of interest, namely, “Using Mobile Banking”, this topic was of most importance to our beginners class as there was a reluctance to use the service for fear of being scammed and being uncertain when managing their finances. This topic, which will be ongoing in November is to attempt to alleviate these concerns. Our guest speaker “Carissa Capewell” from Centrelink presented the topic “My Gov” to our students which was well attended. I wish to thank Carissa for her availability. Students found the presentation very informative. I have decided that while Anne is away, In the month of November I will be refreshing the topics of interest with the beginners class and assist with any queries they may have regarding their personal devices.
For my continuous class I will be presenting the topic “What is smart home Technology” and making students aware of the multitude of appliances that can be connected remotely via their WIFI network. Very interesting topic.
Please be aware that there will be No Thursday classes during “WA Seniors Week 2024”
To All Readers: If you happen to see a topic in the Newsletter that you would like to learn or know more about, please feel free to join the class for that topic. You are most welcome to. Please contact us on 0474 639 961 for further information.

We arrived early for our October meeting and when seated and going for our cup of tea we missed our little nibbles normally placed on the table. Surprise, surprise, sandwiches and slices of cakes were available for us, and we enjoyed them. Thanks to the members who brought them in.
Pat read the Minutes of the last meeting and the Treasurer’s report because Lyn was absent. The President welcomed us warmly and handed out the door prize to Pat Parker. We sang a happy birthday to members celebrating their birthdays this month and gave them a flower each.
We discussed the time of the meeting and some people would be happier if the meeting did not start till 11 am. No real decision was made.
Guest Speaker, Natasha Pirrottina, was very punctual and came from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. She informed us Geraldton is known as one of the most attacked towns in Australia where crimes on computer scams and trade happens often.
She warned us when a deal is too good to be true then it often is.
Be aware of internet traders /Door to door scammers, bitumen bandits, roof repairers, art students. Watch your email, your bank details. If a friend is in need check with the friend to make sure the email asking for help is really from them.
Ring WA Scam Net if you think you have been scammed on 1300 304 054 for information and read the latest warnings and prevention tips at www. scammet.wa.gov.au
Be especially aware of the form from “MyGov. I have been contacted many times when it was a hoax and I am so grateful that I send my forms to my son in law ‘who is a computer expert, to check them.
He realized it was the form from My Government but is had the wrong email address. All my bank details were on the form.
Now I never answer a form from “My Government” and go and visit them when I get a form and the office in Geraldton has become aware that clients have been used and caught in scam.
Our sessions with guest speakers are very valuable. They keep us informed and teach us how to survive in the modern world. Be aware spotting the Scams. Do not get caught.

1. Cut up two onions and soak in two litres of water and leave for two weeks. This helps with yellow leaves and root rot.
2. Cut up two oranges –follow as above.
3. Cut up four bananas –follow as above
4. Cut up four apples - follow as above
Beer - Just pour over the plant – will help with root rot to make the plant breath.
Turmeric – Mix a tablespoon of turmeric powder in a litre of water and spray the solution on your plants. The curcumin
in turmeric will repel pests and insects without harming your plants. As a soil conditioner: Turmeric can improve soil health by promoting the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the soil.
Baking Soda – Sprinkle area affected with fungus, water it in. You might have to do this two times; it depends on the plant. You will be surprised it will come back.
For plant cuttings – cut stem on an angle then dip stem in honey and put into the ground. You can also try a potato or an egg. Put the plant in the middle of the potato or egg and plant. Black & gold custard powder is also good for promoting root growth.
