(Inset photo) A new pedestrian bridge across the Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake opened in December 2022, allowing walkers, runners, cyclists and strollers to journey from High Point City Lake Park to the Piedmont Environmental Center , where they can continue on to the High Point Greenway or connect to the Bicentennial Greenway.
R.E.D. stands for Recreation, Education and Development because football teaches our young athletes life lessons that are more than just the game. Our three R.E.D. Zone youth football teams played under the name of the Broncos this fall, and they had a great season while our cheerleaders kept the fans energized and entertained. For more information on High Point Parks & Recreation’s youth athletics programs, please call 336.883.3480.
The Roy B. Culler, Jr. Senior Center is pleased to announce that it has earned recertification from the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services, meeting the criteria as a "Senior Center of Excellence" for another five-year term. To receive and maintain this recognition, six areas of operation are thoroughly evaluated for high standards of performance, including planning and evaluation, services and activities, advocacy, transportation, volunteer opportunities and input from older adults. Congratulations!
To learn more about the Culler Senior Center and the wide range of activities and services it offers to adults over age 50, please call 336.883.3584 to arrange a visit or register for a program.
Congratulations to the Rah Rahs, the cheerleading team representing the Greater High Point Senior Games! These ladies brought home GOLD at the recent North Carolina Senior Games, and we could not be prouder!
For more information on how to get involved with Senior Games, offering over 55 areas of competition in sports and the arts, please contact the Roy B. Culler, Jr. Senior Center at 336.883.3584.
We love our community partnerships! Special thanks to Phillip Mitchell for choosing to construct a dog agility ramp at Hedgecock Dog Park (300 W. Parris Avenue, High Point) as his Eagle Scout project! Phillip, a student at Ledford High School, is a member of Troop 26 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point. He has two dogs at home - he says his dog Caesar, in particular, is "awesome" - and he grew up enjoying High Point's parks.
To complete his project, Phillip raised $300 for materials through a Go Fund Me campaign and assembled a construction crew that included his dad, friends and other scout troop members. Beeson Lumber donated the wood. Phillip has also worked closely with High Point Parks & Recreation's Parks Maintenance Manager, Eugene Coleman, to make sure the ramp was safe. The results of this collaboration: a new agility ramp at Hedgecock Dog Park!
For more information on Hedgecock Dog Park, please visit https://www.highpointnc.gov/dogpark or call 336.883.3469.
For the first time since 2019, High Point’s Special Olympics athletes were able to participate in a Fall Games tournament! Fiftythree athletes and 14 coaches traveled to Charlotte to compete in bocce, cycling, golf, soccer and softball and wow, did they bring home some impressive results!
Congratulations to our Special Olympics soccer team and softball team; both won silver medals! In total High Point won seven gold medals, eight silver medals, three bronze medals and four fourth-place ribbons. We are always proud of these athletes for the tremendous heart and spirit they bring to all they do, no matter the outcome. Please join us in congratulating them on a job well done. Special thanks to all their supporters and our dedicated volunteers as well!
Congratulations to Dennis Salgado, Chief Park Ranger! We are pleased to congratulate Dennis Salgado on his promotion to Chief Park Ranger! Dennis has been a park ranger for the High Point Parks & Recreation Department for over five years and has served as our Interim Chief Park Ranger since April 2022.
Prior to his service here, Dennis worked for the East Spencer Police Department and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Dennis has also served as a reserve office for the Liberty Police Department. Please join us in congratulating Dennis!
High Point Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce that Will Deters was recently named Recreation Center Supervisor at Deep River Recreation Center. Morehead Recreation Center was full of the holiday spirit during the 2022 ASPIRE holiday dance as participants enjoyed some great music, dancing, catching up with friends, good food and visits with Santa. (WE KNOW HIM!)
We heard The Grinch stopped by, too - but he didn't spoil any of the fun! Special thanks, as always, to our wonderful volunteers from High Point University for helping make this a great evening!

Welcome Paul Kinn!
High Point Parks & Recreation extends a warm welcome to Paul Kinn, Oak Hollow Tennis Center’s new tennis professional! A lifelong athlete and a tennis professional for the past seven years, Paul grew up in Pulaski, N.Y. He enjoys fly fishing, bowling and hiking with his wife Hannah and their dogs Kuli and Buttercup.

If you have worked with Joyce Chambliss during her 42 years and three months with High Point Parks & Recreation, then you are a fortunate person indeed.
Joyce began her career with us working at Morehead Recreation Center, formerly known as Leonard Street. She moved to a part-time position at the Oak Hollow Tennis Center and began her full-time tenure with our department. Joyce has worked for the Culler Senior Center and in several positions in Parks & Recreation Administration, and in all of them, she has brought her calm, kind and friendly manner. She's just an all-around wonderful person - and we are going to miss her greatly!
Joyce, we wish you all the best in your retirement; thank you for all you have done for the High Point community and the department!
After completely renovating the High Point City Lake Park gymnasium that was originally built in 1960, High Point Parks & Recreation held a dedication for its new meeting and event center on November 5. The building’s meeting space will be available for public rentals in early 2023 and is suitable for corporate events and family celebrations such as wedding receptions, baby showers and birthday parties. Please call 336.883.3498 to learn more.
Another exciting feature of the renovated building is the extensive history wall. It’s well-known that High Point City Lake Park, one of the oldest parks in North Carolina and the most visited in the High Point Parks & Recreation system, is an iconic landmark in our area. Now, visitors to the building can learn more about its rich history and enduring importance to the community through this curated display of stories, photos and videos.
The pool has been reconfigured to feature a splash pad, 50-meter swimming pool, zero-depth entry with a lazy river and play features and three water slides! The locker rooms have been completely renovated and feature more family-friendly changing rooms and are more accessible. The new pool will open Memorial Day weekend 2023.
On December 21, High Point Parks & Recreation proudly cut the ribbon on the new trail leading from High Point City Lake Park across the new bridge spanning the Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake to the High Point Greenway.
This connection takes walkers, runners and cyclists from High Point City Lake Park to the Piedmont Environmental Center, where they can continue on the High Point Greenway to Armstrong Park or connect to the Bicentennial Greenway.
As part of this opening, there is now a new traffic pattern through High Point City Lake Park, which provides a safe walking path through the park. Please see the map for details or visit https://www.highpointnc.gov/1832/Trails-Greenways .
High Point Parks & Recreation Assistant Director Tracy Pegram recently gave a presentation to the High Point Museum’s Historical Society (HPHS) on the detailed process undertaken as we developed the history wall for the new Meeting & Event Center at High Point City Lake Park. For over a year, Parks & Recreation staff read countless newspaper articles, searched old scrapbooks, scanned old photos and interviewed dozens of High Point residents to help tell the story of this iconic park and its fascinating history.
At the Historical Society’s Meeting on November 16, HPHS member James Frazier McGee and his wife Bertha Lowe McGee, both native High Pointers, took a few moments to look over the new history wall. Mr. McGee recalled walking on the dam when he was a little boy, and they both laughed at the memories of their kids learning to swim at High Point City Lake Park, especially one son who was “not afraid of anything.”

There are all kinds of trails across our beautiful state: paved trails, natural trails and blueway trails. Some wind through the mountains; others are comprised of the sandy soil we find down east. Some require a fair level of fitness to complete; others are easy to walk, run or stroll with a friend or four-legged companion.
Trails impact our health and well-being. They are a safe place to connect with nature and have a positive impact on North Carolina’s economy. These are just a few of the reasons why 2023 has been declared the “Year of the Trail” by the General Assembly and the Great Trails State Coalition (www.greattrailsstatecoalition.org).
High Point Parks & Recreation is joining the NC Recreation and Parks Association and departments like ours across the state to raise awareness about the trails in our area and region in this year-long campaign and the importance they play in our lives. Please follow us on Facebook (High Point Parks and Recreation, NC) and Instagram (highpointparksandrecreation) to join us on the journey and many others we will take together in 2023!
