How did the travel apply to the job?

As the Chief of Emergency Operations, my role directly aligns with FEMA's initiative to link training programs to established emergency management competencies and a Career Development Program. The National Emergency Management Basic Academy serves as a foundational platform, covering essential topics such as legal issues, collaboration, and technology. My responsibilities include identifying and nurturing these competencies within my team, as well as selecting and onboarding new members who will undergo this training. By ensuring my team is well-equipped with the latest emergency management competencies, I enhance the city's preparedness and response capabilities in the face of various crises. My expertise in areas such as legal issues, collaboration, and technology empowers the city to navigate emergencies efficiently and ethically. Overall, my training directly contributes to safeguarding the lives and property of Independence's residents and securing the city's infrastructure against potential threats.

How did the travel apply to the job?

The Fire Service Leadership Enhancement Program (FSLEP) is a program designed to build leadership and management skills for those in supervisory/executive levels of fire and rescue organizations. The goal of FSLEP is specifically to prepare fire and emergency services leaders for the opportunities and challenges they face in the fire service of today and tomorrow through content and networking that are relevant, challenging and participant centered.

How did training add value to the city?

To develop skills beyond the traditional leadership courses, the program will include more focused participant-centered discussion on topics that challenge leaders today. The program will use a combined approach through both education and training, providing the participant the theoretical knowledge to develop their personal leadership skills, with training to provide current best-practice approaches for the practical application of leadership and management.
