2024 MCMA Annual Spring Conference
How did the travel apply to the job?
The Missouri City/County Manager’s Association is the statewide professional society for city and county administrators. This gathering allowed me to gain important insights into local government issues and trends while networking with nd learning from my colleagues from across the State.
How did training add value to the city?
The courses provide important insights into critical issues that will help me stay abreast of local government trends, such as the proliferation of artificial intelligence platforms in the workplace, while also developing new skills that will help me better serve the employees and residents of Independence.
General comments:
At this conference, I was installed as the 1st Vice President of the MCMA Board of Directors.

How did the travel apply to the job?
Continuing legal education ("CLE") hours, including all required ethics hours required by the State of Missouri to practice law and work as a prosecutor for the City were completed while spending the last week at the Missouri Municipal Conference.
How did training add value to the city?
The training allows me to stay updated as to current Missouri law. There were two caselaw sessions devoted solely to recent cases. Also, another portion of the training was devoted to legislative updates and keeps the registered attorneys knowledgeable about the most current changes in Missouri law.
General comments:
I appreciate the City investing in my CLE, and that I could spend it at a conference with a focus on courts. The inherent bias session that highlights recognition and prevention is a reminder to stay alert to visitors' perceptions at court sessions. The information I gained last week will help me do the best job I can do for the City of Independence.

Certified Fire Investigator Course
How did the travel apply to the job?
The Fire Investigator course is a NFPA 1033 standard, 40-hour POST approved, course that covers accidental and incendiary fire causes, juvenile firesetting, legal aspects, and interview and interrogation. The course assists students with completing the relevant classroom exercises and practical skills, as well as preparing them to take the state Fire Investigator Certification Examination.
How did training add value to the city?
The Detective Unit currently only has one certified Fire/Arson Investigator. It is a very time-consuming task when a fire needs to be investigated. Having additional personnel to assist in fire investigations will not only lighten the case load for the Detective but will also produce higher quality investigations that more time can be dedicated to. This would also shorten the time each Detective is pulled away from their other cases and help to optimize the teamwork aspect of investigations.
General comments:
Per diem check was done by the City. Hotel was paid on a City p-card.
