HISTORY AT HARVEST SEASON

48th Annual Cider Days | October 5-6, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The annual Cider Days festival pays tribute to Lakewood’s rich agricultural history, dating back to the late 1800s when farms and orchards lined Wadsworth, and apple, cherry and strawberry stands dotted Colfax Avenue. Though Lakewood’s farming days grow increasingly more distant, Cider Days continues to celebrate our local history and traditions every harvest season.

• Vintage Cider Presses: Press apple cider using Heritage Lakewood’s vintage apple presses, a few of which date back to the late 1800s! Don’t forget to bring apples and a jug to participate. Elbow grease required.

• Traditional Dance: Bring your dancing shoes to participate in two American folk traditions! Find square dancing demonstrations and line dancing classes at Cider Days to get folks of all ages up and moving.

• Historic Demonstrations: Cider Days boasts more than 15 time-honored crafts of the past from blacksmithing to butter making. Watch our skilled crafters demonstrate lace making, woodcarving, rug hooking and butter churning. The WWI sock knitting machine is a Cider Days favorite!

• Tractor Pull: As early as 1929, farmers began attaching their tractors to drags to see who could pull the farthest. Join the Rocky Mountain Tractor Pullers Association for one of the largest pulls in

Colorado, as they celebrate this tradition using their collection of antique tractors.

• Vintage Farm Equipment: Explore a variety of farm staples from a spring tooth harrow to a corn cultivator in the Agricultural Yard and peruse Heritage Lakewood’s collection of vintage tractors in the Red Barn.

• The Race of Old Iron: Also in the Agricultural Yard, don’t miss the world’s (or at least Lakewood’s) slowest race, featuring vintage tractors. The race is hosted in partnership with our friends at the Front Range Antique Power Association.

• Historic Buildings: Step into our historic buildings and become transported back in time. Start along the Colfax Hub to explore timeless midcentury relics from the 1940s to 1960s, then keep traveling to our Farm Center and Belmar Estate Center which date back to the 1910-1930s.

MEMORABLE EXHIBITIONS

The Lakewood Cultural Center, in its first 25 years of operation, has seen the many faces of the community show up in galleries and classrooms, on stage and in the audience .

Lakewood Cultural Center at a Glance

LCC Galleries have presented artwork by more than 7,000 local, regional and national artists over the last 25 years

LCC and Richey Galleries host an average of more than 15 exhibitions annually.

The exhibition “Accentuate the Aggregate” was ranked as a “mustsee” exhibition by the Denver Post, with multiple other exhibitions receiving accolades in reviews in the last five years .

LCC Galleries partner with at least eight local arts and culture organizations annually to present group exhibitions of local artists of all ages

Inspire Arts Lakewood has been bringing arts and culture partners together for free and low-cost events celebrating the city’s creativity for 10 years.

LCC was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant to support the creation of “TimeShare,” a biennial exhibition of technology-based art media, in collaboration with Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design and 40 West Arts

Inclusion is a specific goal for exhibits in LCC galleries. Exhibitions like “Recalibrated Reflections,” “Seeing Requires Not Sight,” and “I Contain Multitudes” featured artwork by creators of varying abilities and BIPOC artists, highlighting the diverse artistic voices in the Lakewood community

North Gallery

A building is not what makes the LCC; it is the people who bring this beautiful space pulsing to life with artistry, creativity and community. To celebrate the collective human energy that makes the Lakewood Cultural Center so special, the exhibition, “Collective Reflection: Honoring the Past, Present, and Future Community of the LCC,” will contain a collection of performance and program memorabilia (see images at right) nestled among dynamic and diverse portraiture. This amalgamation of artifacts and portraits, both traditional and visionary, coalesces to commemorate and reflect the LCC of the past and present while inspiring the community to look forward to the future of culture in Lakewood.

25 YEARS AS A COMMUNITY HUB

For 25 years, the Lakewood Cultural Center has been a vibrant hub for discovery, entertainment, and lifelong enrichment . Live performances, classes and camps, exhibitions, and community engagement programs foster a sense of connection, making the LCC a true “center” for the community . We are celebrating this milestone with a year of special events including captivating performances, inspiring exhibitions, engaging arts programming, and much more from September 2024 to July 2025 .

Many partners have contributed to establishing the Lakewood Cultural Center as “the” spot for quality arts, culture and entertainment in the city. Lakewood audiences have forged a special bond with these resident performing groups who grace the Cultural Center stage each year, and the organizations consider the Lakewood Cultural Center their artistic home, returning for multiple performances. A few of these “regulars” share their stories.

PARTNER: Augustine Classical Academy is a classical, Christian Pre-K through 12th grade school in Lakewood and has hosted events at the LCC for three years.

What keeps you coming back to LCC?

“To create a great experience for our students and the audience, we need a partner like the Cultural Center, whose staff sees our vision and helps us bring it to fruition,” Hilary Oswald, director of Grammar School and Theater Club.

What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“The LCC helps us develop in our students a love for the arts, which will serve our students and the broader community as these kids grow up.”

PARTNER: Iluminar Aerial, a professional aerial dance performance company, has worked with the LCC for 10 years.

What sets LCC apart from other venues?

“We have rented other theaters around our studio home in Broomfield, but they have never measured up to the consistent professionalism demonstrated by the staff and technical crew at Lakewood,” Emmy Moon, co-owner and artistic director of Iluminar. What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“Providing the area with a beautiful theater that continues to help dance and theater thrive in our community.”

Iluminar Aerial’s production of Into the Forest, 2018.

PARTNER: Lakewood Symphony Orchestra has performed its seasons at the LCC for 20 years.

What sets LCC apart from other venues?

“It’s a landmark for Lakewood. It has a great, central location and hosts lots of programs and concerts during the year. The acoustics are great, and the staff are super helpful and friendly. It’s the complete package,” Dr. Matthew Switzer, LSO conductor. What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“For our group, the size of the hall is perfect. The musicians love it and I love it.”

Scan the QR code or visit Lakewood.org/LCC to learn about rentals, programs and performances at Lakewood Cultural Center.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

PARTNER: Performance Now Theatre Company has partnered with the LCC for 22 years and is a professional-quality theater company that provides the highest quality family entertainment and educational opportunities for young actors.

What has LCC meant to your organization?

“The Cultural Center provides the best facility, service and amenities for our patrons. At least one production each year is co-presented with LCC Presents, and that increases our patron base,” Ken Goodwin, executive producer at Performance Now.

What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“The Cultural Center is the jewel of Lakewood. Its wide variety of shows are top-notch and varied. There is something for everyone at the Lakewood Cultural Center.”

PARTNER: A seven-year partner, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of theater organs and theater organ music.

What sets LCC apart from other venues?

“Super cooperation and an excellent technical staff. It’s just a joy to work there,” Lee Shaw, RMCATOS member.

CULTURAL

What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“It’s a treasure for the community because of the wide variety of events they host. To have that available locally and not financially out of reach to audiences is a big benefit.”

PARTNER: Beginning as a group of seven ukulele players, the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra has grown to about 100 members over 13 years working with the Cultural Center.

What has LCC meant to your organization?

“We’ve been able to grow our programs and offer a first-class experience for our music. What we do is very weird, and the Cultural Center staff work with us to make sure we have what we need to be successful,” Gary Jugert, director of the Ukelele Orchestra.

What makes LCC worth celebrating?

“Through changes in personnel and leadership styles, the Cultural Center continues to be a remarkable place for all the arts. I love seeing the miniature ballerinas running the halls, the sculptures and paintings in a perpetual state of change and of course the varied programming on the main stage.”

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

TAKING CARE

At Heritage Lakewood, our historic structures are a cherished part of the community, and we owe much of their care and upkeep to the dedicated efforts of our historic preservation and restoration volunteers. This talented team, composed of Chuck Houser, Dick Gallagher and Ron Everhart, follows the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. These standards provide guidelines for best practices in historic preservation, ensuring minimal changes to original materials and preserving the original craftsmanship.

One of Heritage Lakewood's recent projects is the rehabilitation of the Peerless Gas Station, which features newly restored gas pumps. One day while Chuck was walking in the park with his son, they noticed several old gas pumps in need of restoration. Encouraged by his son, Chuck decided to volunteer and took on the project of restoring these pumps to their original glory.

Chuck’s connection to gas stations runs deep. In the 1950s, he owned gas stations in the San Luis Valley and has firsthand experience working with the type of gas pumps in our collection. This unique background made him the perfect person to lead the gas pump restoration efforts. Under his expert care, and about 250 hours of volunteer time, the pumps have been meticulously restored and will soon become a focal point of the Peerless Gas Station. We are incredibly excited for the public to see the beautifully restored gas pumps, thanks to the hard work and dedication of Chuck and his fellow volunteers. Their commitment to preserving Heritage Lakewood’s charm is truly inspiring.

Visit the Peerless Gas Station to witness the incredible transformation firsthand this fall!
