ON THE COVER Paa Kow (pronounced Pah-Ko) and his Afro Fusion orchestra performs on July 13 as part of the Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert Series. Fusing rhythm and artistry from Ghana with West African pop and jazz impressions, Paa Kow has extraordinary talent and holds the perfect groove. Dubbed “Ghana’s most artistic drummer” (Modern Ghana), he plays a custom Ghanaian drum set, guaranteeing an extraordinary cultural and musical experience. Paa Kow and his band rocked Lakewood’s amphitheater in 2018 and were scheduled to perform again in 2020 before the pandemic struck. We couldn’t be more excited to have him back with new, original music from his album “Nkwa Na Ehia” released last year.

COLORADO CONNECTION While living in Ghana, Paa Kow had a chance meeting with a traveling student from the University of Colorado Boulder and, in 2007, Paa Kow was invited to CU as a guest artist and teacher. The cultural exchange with musicians in the U.S. gave rise to his Afro Fusion sound. He says, “What I like most about the Colorado music scene is there are always people excited to see and support live music.”

ART ALONG THE CORRIDOR

Since its formation by the City of Lakewood in 2003, the Alameda Corridor Business Improvement District (ACBID) has worked to enliven the Alameda Corridor with vibrant public art that cultivates connections through the celebration of community. Exciting and detailed information on all of our artwork can now be conveniently found using the Discover Alameda App, downloadable on the Apple App store and Google Play.

or photograph by a local artist. The boxes are discoverable all along the corridor and in the surrounding area. The public art program along the Alameda Corridor features a diverse array of artistic mediums and styles by numerous artists. ACBID invites the community to download the Discover Alameda App and explore how art energizes our community.

ACBID’s public art program started in 2007 with the entry art feature called Flow at Alameda and Sheridan. Since then, the program has grown to include myriad sculptures, wall murals, plywood mobile murals and bus shelter murals. Sidewalk history “icons” and traffic box wraps are yet another energizing component of the ACBID public art program. Visitors can follow our blue history icons on a walkable journey through the history of the Alameda Corridor. The story of Alameda is filled with interesting people, including farmers and ranchers, a reclusive heiress, construction workers building Alameda during the Great Depression and the visionaries who built Villa Italia and Belmar. The ACBID Alameda traffic box wraps present a colorful collage of images from the natural and human worlds displayed on the ordinary electrical boxes powering our traffic lights. Each box features a digitally designed image, fine artwork, 16

DIY POM-POM PROJECT TRY THIS FUN, FIBER-Y ALL AGES CRAFT PROJECT!

Materials: Scrap cardboard (the thicker the better) Pencil and Ruler Yarn Cardboard template

Tools: Scissors

Instructions: 1. Draw and cut out the shape to the right using your piece of scrap cardboard with the measurements given. 2. Wrap yarn around your piece of cardboard and be sure that the gap is in the middle as you wrap it around many times. Cut off the end. Tip*- When you feel you have a enough yarn wrapped, keep going a bit longer! 3. Cut a piece of yarn roughly 10 inches. While the yarn is still wrapped around the cardboard use this piece of yarn to loop it through the gap and tie it around the entire lump of yarn tightly in the middle. 4. Slide the yarn off the carboard, turn it over and tie it tighter on the other side. Turn it over once more and tie it tighter again. 5. Using your scissors, cut the looped ends. Fluff it out a bit as you notice it will be a bit shaggy and uneven. Now trim until it is round all around! You can stop here and make more! String them together to make a garland or attach to the end of a scarf.

THE DIY MOVEMENT: BLACKSMITHING WITH JEFF RACE Creativity, perseverance and a healthy dose of self-reliance have always been at the heart of the urban homesteading revival. Ignited well before and accelerated by the pandemic, this DIY movement is having much more than a moment, with Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park as the local epicenter. Urban homesteading-style crafts are proving to be as fun as they are practical.

MEET JEFF If you have attended Lakewood’s famed Cider Days festival over the last few years, chances are you have encountered Jeff. Most likely, you will hear the satisfying thunk of a hammer or smell the distinct odor of a coal-fired forge before you see him. You will find him carefully tending the forge, sporting a smile so big that even a mask cannot hide it.

Teaching his craft Jeff signed on as an instructor with Heritage Lakewood in 2020. He enjoys sharing his passion for the engaging, hands-on activity. His blacksmithing classes have become increasingly popular, with students raving about his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patient approach to teaching. These tactile, outdoor classes provide a wonderful alternative to screen time. One of the best parts of blacksmithing are the creations that the students produce and take home! Blacksmithing classes offered at Heritage Lakewood range from Introduction to Blacksmithing, where students create their own steak (or veggie) flipper, to Blacksmithing III, where students craft their own bottle opener! If you are looking to iron out your New Year’s resolution of learning a new hobby, come join Jeff at the forge. Sign up for Jeff’s upcoming class by searching keyword “Blacksmith” at Lakewood.org/Register.

Originally from Peoria, Illinois, Jeff began to put hammer to anvil as a hobby in 1972. He moved to the Lakewood area in 1998. Jeff and his wife Judy, a craftsperson in her own right, have demonstrated at Cider Days since 2018. Festival attendees, intrigued by the glowing hot forge and intricate metal creations, stop to watch the demonstration and ask Jeff questions. Always happy to share his knowledge of the craft, he gladly discusses topics ranging from the general history of the forge, to anvil weight and where to find his favorite coal for blacksmithing (it’s Pennsylvania, by the way).

To continue and make them into Warm, Fuzzy Friends (youth-aimed): Materials: Googly eyes • Glue • Foam sheets Tools: Scissors Instructions:

3"

1. Cut a square from the foam sheet that is slightly larger then your pom-pom. Then cut a heart shape from that square. 2. Add a dot of glue to the point of the heart and then attach the pom-pom to the glue dot. 3. Decide where you want to attach the googly eyes and add small glue dots to the pom-pom. Attach your googly eyes to the glue dots. 4. Let the glue dry and enjoy your new little warm and fuzzy friend! Lakewood.org/Bravo

A NEW LOOK AT HERITAGE LAKEWOOD Last fall, Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park commissioned local photographer Bill Guerriero to capture our historic buildings with his creative lens. Learn more about this project during a special History Happy Hour on August 23, when we will host Bill for a presentation and site tour. Call 303-987-7850 to register. Dive into the rich history of our historic structures at Lakewood.org/Heritage.

Gas Station

Heritage Lakewood looks forward to restoring this mid-century gas station to its former glory days of Colfax Avenue tourism! If you are looking for programs about architecture and historic preservation, check out Conservation Conversations at the Caretaker’s Cottage every first Tuesday of the month.

Gil & Ethel’s Gil and Ethel Gomez bought this Art Moderne building in the 1960s for their barbershop and beauty salon, but during the 1950s it was a laundry and variety store!

Calving Barn

Visitor Center

Streer-Peterson House

The Calving Barn, built around 1910, was one of the structures used for agriculture on the Belmar Estate during May Bonfils Stanton’s ownership in the 1930s through the 1960s. Today, the building serves as homebase for Heritage Lakewood summer camps.

Although the Visitor Center’s style is vintage, it was built in 2003 as a place to start your museum tour.

Housing a Jewish dairy farming family in 1918-1921, this home was originally located down by Fox Hollow Golf Course.
