Instructor Spotlight Margaret Jurado Ballet was my first love, one I pursued beginning about age 8 after moving from the east coast to Richland, Washington. After high school, I attended the University of Utah because it offered a BFA in ballet. My training became more intermittent as marriage and children took a front seat. Eventually my family and I moved from the Salt Lake area to Denver and I resumed my training. (If you’re dancing, you’re training.) I eventually decided to retire from ballet and get a job with more normal hours. So, for the next 30 years I sat behind a desk in an office environment. In case you didn’t know already, that’s not the way to get or stay in shape! After retiring from my office job, I decided to try to get back in shape, so I began by taking SilverSneakers® classes. One day Essentrics® was offered as a substitute for the SilverSneakers® Fit Forever class I was taking, and I was hooked! The whole-body movements and their coordination with the musical accompaniment are similar to ballet. (Essentrics® was created by a former ballet dancer so it’s no accident!) I also appreciate that no weights, bands or balls are used in class but just the weight of your body. After about a year of classes I decided to pursue getting my certification to teach Essentrics® because, for me, the program has been successful. I feel better now than I have in years. The students in class inspire me so with their commitment to becoming their best selves. I love teaching Essentrics® and seeing the students’ progress as we grow together.

Volunteer Spotlight Jim Rothrock I was born and raised with my three brothers in Denver. After graduating from Denver Public Schools, I attended Mesa State College located in Grand Junction earning a BS degree in plant and animal management. I planned on working in a zoo. Plans changed (well almost - lol), and I completely enjoyed my 30-year teaching career. I taught earth science, biology and anatomy classes at both the junior and senior high school levels. My interest in art began 25 years ago when I bought my Dad watercolor lessons for his birthday. He said, “I am not doing this alone,” so I also took the classes. We both enjoyed learning to paint and spending time together. While continuing with watercolor lessons, a fellow student told me a friend of hers said The Art and Soul program (painting class) at Clements Center needed volunteer instructors. Because I was a former school teacher, she suggested my name. I called and attended the first class and was very excited at what the program offered and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the other mentor instructors. Every class I teach has been fun and very rewarding. Great progress is shown by the students each session. Most importantly many beautiful pieces of art have been painted! My parents taught my brothers and me to share the knowledge and skills we have so others may enjoy the activity as much as we do. This has been proven to be true and I’m glad I get to volunteer in the Art and Soul program at the Clements Center!
