Get to Know two great Summer Camp Counselors!
Sign up for a summer of creative adventure at Lakewood.org/Camps
Ingrid Pam Tell us a funny fact about yourself! I absolutely love puns! I like to think of myself as quite punny, and I enjoy telling jokes at camp. What’s your favorite thing about summer camp? It is so heartwarming to see the students get excited about the things that they love! Helping them create a whole theme of projects each week is so exciting. What’s your favorite camp activity? My favorite part about art camps are the mini art shows at the end of each week. All students from each morning and afternoon class get the chance to exhibit their artwork at the end of camp. I get to watch as students anticipate showing their families what they have created and try on the projects that they have made! What’s your favorite thing about summer? My favorite part about summer is that it’s just about always warm outside! It means I get to wear my favorite sandals without my feet freezing. I get to enjoy rain instead of snow, longer days and, of course, camping with friends! The best ice cream in Colorado is: Bonnie Brae ice cream right by my college campus! They have the most amazing mint chocolate chip, though I attempt to try a new flavor every time I go.
Tell us a funny fact about yourself! I have a wickedly vivid imagination! On the way to an onsite photo class, we talked about wild animals we might see. Once out I was so busy taking shots of everything that I didn’t keep track of where I was going. At about sundown I realized my mistake and tried to find my way back. On the way I heard a loud thump, and my mind immediately went to mountain lions. At that point I was practically running to get back to the group. Unfortunately this amazing buck was standing before me, but I was too terrified of the mountain lion my imagination had conjured up to stop and take the picture. What’s your favorite thing about summer camp? I like that they are open to all with camp topics that appeal to everyone. What’s your favorite camp activity? I love finding ways to connect kids with the past activities such as building race cars from boxes while learning about the origins of Lakeside Amusement Park, or making applesauce as a way to preserve fruits during Colorado’s “lean” years. What’s your favorite thing about summer? Aside from not having to shovel snow, my favorite thing to do is to get out and capture various events of the season using my camera. The best ice cream in Colorado is: Cold Stone Creamery’s Founder’s Favorite!

n i m r i F l i a G : e l i f o r Artist P Local artist Gail Firmin has a warm, welcoming nature and easy smile that is well suited to her role as a much-beloved teacher in Lakewood. Gail has been painting since childhood, growing up with two artist parents who would set up family painting sessions in front of their fireplace at home. Despite winning an award for a still life graphite drawing she did in middle school, watercolor has always been her chosen medium, as it was the medium she learned from her parents.
Clements Community Center, teaching drawing, pen and ink and varying levels of watercolor.
In her personal time, Gail stays inspired through travel, getting outdoors as much as possible and taking photographs along the way that she brings home to turn into art. A recent trip to Oregon yielded a colored pencil piece she kept for herself -- who knows what upcoming trips to Italy, New Orleans and California could bring! In addition to her full teaching schedule, she stays busy as a member of the Ken Caryl Art Guild, Littleton Gail has stuck with watercolor all these Fine Art Guild, Lakewood Arts Council and years because it has “so much possibility Colorado Watercolor Society. Lakewood Looks Back:
Lakewood Police Department
Lakewood Police Department celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010, publishing a book filled with photos and memories from those first four decades of service. The department’s first recruit class consisted of 25 agents selected from an applicant pool that stretched from California to New York City. Lakewood’s first city hall was at 1580 Yarrow St., now home to Clements Community Center.
The newly minted public safety force wore nontraditional uniforms of blue blazers and slacks and lived by the motto Integrity, Intelligence, Initiative. The force encountered some growing pains in the early 1970s, including a muchpublicized encounter with a black bear that was loose near Kipling Street and Morrison Road. Responding officers attempted to tranquilize the bear, but the dosage was too large for bears 26 May - August 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

Police Department
and the animal died. It was later discovered that the bear was the former mascot of the Denver Bears baseball team and belonged to a nearby Lakewood resident. In 1972, LPD hired its first two women agents, Clarene Shelley and Sharon Hall. Lakewood was the first Jefferson County city to put women out on patrol, second in the area only to Denver. In other police departments, women held jobs with no arrest powers, such as jail matron. From 1976-1980, the LPD “Blue Blazers” went undefeated in the Centurion Bowl, a full-pad tackle regulation football game between police departments. They faced teams from other states, such as the Ogden Police Department from Utah, as well as hometown rivalries of Arvada Police and Jefferson County Sheriffs. The early 1980s brought with it the era of “Colfax Cruising,” where teens drove their cars up and down Colfax Avenue on Friday and Lakewood.org/Bravo
Saturday nights, leading to huge traffic jams and escalating incidents. Lakewood became the popular destination after the construction of the 16th Street Mall and a ruling by Englewood City Council prohibiting cruising. Despite many arrests and misdemeanor charges due to various incidents, “Colfax Cruisers” once helped solve a crime. One Friday night, two suspects robbed the Kentucky Fried Chicken on West Colfax Avenue and fled in their vehicle toward Denver. They didn’t get very far, however, before finding themselves completely blocked in by cruiser traffic. They were quickly apprehended and charged with the crime. In June 1984, LPD moved into its current home in the Public Safety Building at 445 South Allison Parkway, which was alone at the end of a dead-end street until the construction of Lakewood Civic Center in 2000.
Other notable events from the past 20 years include the installation of a satellite office at Villa Italia Mall, the deployment of the Bike Patrol Unit in 1993 and Good Housekeeping Magazine recognizing LPD as “setting the standard” as one of “America’s Best Suburban Police Forces.” In 2008, LPD played a key role in providing security for the Democratic National Convention, being specially chosen for the high-profile task of providing primary security for the central core of activities happening at Pepsi Center and Invesco Field. Approximately 140 agents, supervisors, dispatchers and other personnel worked convention detail, putting in an average 80 hours a week. The department’s massive contribution to the success of the operation drew praise from the Secret Service, FBI and Denver Police Department. Don’t miss your chance to connect with your Lakewood Police Department during National Night Out in August. Visit Lakewood.org/NNO for more information. If you are interested in purchasing one of the Police Department’s 40th Anniversary Books for $10, contact Lori Miller at LorMil@Lakewood.org or visit the 20th Century Emporium at Lakewood Heritage Center.
