Welcome to the City of Loveland Parks & Recreation Department’s Fall 2015 Leisure Times Activity Guide! These are indeed exciting times for Parks and Recreation in Loveland! The City’s newest and second largest community park, Mehaffey Park, located in northwest Loveland, will officially open for public use August 1st. The park, purchased from the Mehaffey family in 1997, has been under construction since August 2013 and boasts amenities that range from rock climbing walls in the Adventure Playground to a state of the art skate venue to a dog park sure to please your four-legged friends. We hope you go out and explore everything Mehaffey Park has to offer….it has definitely been worth the wait! From the new to historic, Loveland Parks and Recreation is commitment to excellence in design, function, and opportunities for quality leisure experiences. Our team is currently undertaking the design process to restore and rebuild a beloved Loveland treasure, Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park. The planned restoration effort is based on the new, and very different, site conditions in the aftermath of the September 2013 Flood that scoured away most of the park’s features. The master plan for the park is designed to make the new park more resilient in the face of future flooding, and more ecologically sensitive to the river that flows through it, becoming a truly natural park ideal for fishing, picnicking, exploring, and truly enjoying. I’m also excited to announce that your Loveland Parks and Recreation Department is a finalist for the 2015 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management! The Gold Medal Awards Program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long range planning, resource management, volunteering, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Our department is dedicated to continually addressing the needs of those we serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials and we are most pleased by this distinguished recognition. Reach your goals, discover new adventures, increase your knowledge, and most of all, have FUN doing it! Elizabeth R. Anderson, CPRP Director, City of Loveland - Parks & Recreation
