Climbing Wall Since the climbing wall at The Edge at Mason Community Center opened over 18 months ago, over 7,000 participants have tried their hand at scaling the 35-foot wall. If you are one of those 7,000, we hope to see you back soon—and if you haven’t stopped by yet, we’d love to have you give it a try! Premier and day pass holders are welcome to climb for no additional fee. For $7, Basic members may purchase an all-day pass that includes the exergames and climbing wall. Climbers must be at least five years old and ten years old to be by themselves in The Edge. Each climber must have a valid, signed waiver on file with the staff. The waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian if the individual is under the age of 18 and is valid for one year. There are two methods for climbing the wall. An auto-belay is used on the taller portion of the wall and the standard humansupported belay method is used on the shorter, “real-rock” portion. “Belaying” someone simply means to securely tie a climber to the end of a rope. These ropes are then used to lower the climber back to the ground once they are finished climbing. The classic method of belaying someone is to attach one end of the climbing rope to the climber’s harness and the other end to the staff member located on the ground, who will control the rate of descent and slack in the climbing rope. An auto belay is an automatic device that eliminates the need for a human belayer. The auto belay uses a magnetic braking system to take up slack as the climber ascends and to control the descent after the climber reaches the top or in the event of a fall. To register, see page 2.

The climbing wall has an array of handholds that are laid out in a specific pattern, called a route. The handholds are color coded by difficulty. Our green and white handholds are the easiest, while the routes marked with black handholds are the hardest. The handholds are rearranged every few months to create new routes to keep the climbing experience fresh and exciting. If you have any questions about The Edge, please stop by. Any of the staff on hand will be more than happy to assist you. August / September 2012

Young Rembrandts® Drawing Classes

Meeting Room

Activity Room B Drawing is the fundamental skill of the visual arts and can give children an academic advantage in the classroom. Young Rembrandts® focuses on teaching children to draw using demonstration and a structured step-by-step process. This method of directed drawing gives young students instruction on how to draw increasingly complex images at a crucial time in their development. Through the process of weekly instruction, students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concepts, art history, and mastery of their materials.

When music and movement are a natural, joyous part of childhood, children benefit greatly in many areas of life. Language development, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, social interaction, fine motor skills, listening, problem solving, teamwork, goal setting, and coordination are all impacted by early music and movement education. What's more, as a child learns to play music, other areas of development—creativity, family bonding, self-esteem, confidence, and emotional development—are also positively impacted.

Pre-School Drawing

Family Music for Babies

Young Rembrandts™ pre-school program is designed with the youngest learners in mind. Subjects that youngsters are familiar with, such as animals and toys, are used along with their favorite learning tools— pictures, stories, touching, and doing—to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, fine-motor skills, and staying on-task. You’ll be amazed at what they create!

Play musically with your baby through bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, dancing, moving, and singing. Music play activities are designed to increase your child's curiosity about music, to develop listening skills and a sense of beat, and to establish the foundation for singing and musical thought.

Fitness Tip From Kelly Burchett, Wellness Supervisor at Mason Community Center. Do you find yourself doing really well at your diet and exercise during the week but on the weekend, all bets are off? The September 2003 Nutrition Research Newsletter reported on a study that found that Americans 19 to 50 years old take in 115 more calories per day on the weekend (defined as Friday through Sunday) than on the other days of the week. Over the course of a year, that adds up to 17,940 extra calories -- or about 5 pounds. The best advice to reduce the weekend gain is to be active! It’s a common feeling that you have worked hard all week and deserve to relax. While very true, sitting by the TV for hours, mindlessly eating snacks, does not let your body relax. There are many great things to do in Mason and the surrounding area. Take some time to check our upcoming events, festivals, and activities; organize your own weekend activities with family or friends; take a walk in between outdoor sports you are watching you children play in. Even an extra lap around the grocery store will help! The other side of that battle is to watch what you eat. The biggest culprit of munching hunger is dehydration, so be sure to drink plenty of good ol’ H2O. By drinking up to 8 glasses a day, you will help curb the hunger feeling that dehydration causes. Also, start your day with a great breakfast even during the weekend. Keeping your metabolism running and starting your day off right will help curb eating throughout the rest of the day. In general, try not to skip meals. By doing so, you are more likely to overeat later in the day. So get out there and enjoy your weekend with rest, relaxation, and a fun activity!

Drop-In Group Exercise Class Review Aggressive Intervals Mason Community Center is pleased to offer Aggressive Intervals as a drop-in group exercise option. This format uses the Tabata method of exercise named after Professor Izumi Tabata, who was asked to analyze the effectiveness of a training regimen developed by Coach Irisawa Koichi of the Japanase speed skating team. The training consists of intervals completed in a 4-minute span of time: 8 rounds of 20 seconds of all-out max effort followed by 10 seconds of rest. The Tabata class is a combination of cardiovascular, core, and strength exercises. This class is great for intermediate to advanced exercisers, athletes or former athletes, and anyone who likes to sweat! Results of the “Aggressive Interval” class (Tabata method) include improved aerobic endurance, anaerobic endurance, muscular endurance, and fat burn. A 2007 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that seven sessions of high intensity interval training over two weeks resulted in marked increases in whole body and skeletal muscle capacity for fatty acid oxidation during exercise in moderately active women. A 2009 study from the same journal found that young men cycling to maximum effort for four bouts of 30 seconds with four minutes of rest doubled their metabolic rate for three full hours after training. Also, a 2008 study in the Journal of Physiology found that these short, yet intense types of interval workouts can be a time-efficient way to get in shape and may help participants achieve fitness improvements comparable to longer, less-intense workouts. To see when Aggressive Interval classes are offered, use your smart phone to scan this QR code for the class schedule. Or visit www.imaginemason.org, click the Community Center tab, and look for the link for drop-in classes.

Keys to a Good Swing A tip from Andy Horn, Golf Pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island The two simple golf tips I like to work on are balance and alignment. Many golfers overthink their swing but forget these two important parts of the swing. First, work on good balance through your swing by placing golf balls or some teaching sticks in the ground just outside both feet. Try hitting balls without touching the sticks or rolling on the golf balls outside both of your feet. Then, work on your setup. Place a club on the ground on your toe line and then hold another club on your shoulder line. Both should match up down the line at the target. Most golfers will not have both clubs aiming the same direction. Many will have their feet right and the shoulders left. You can also have a golfing buddy stand behind you and check your setup and alignment. Work on these and you will soon be hitting the ball straighter and more solid every time. Good luck!

Mason Community Center is pleased to offer tennis programs for juniors and adults. Junior classes will follow the “games” approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play “real tennis” before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment. Rainout and makeup classes will be scheduled as needed. There is no makeup for missed classes. In case of inclement weather conditions, arrangements will be made. Please call the City of Mason Hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program cancellations or delays due to weather.

Pee Wees This class is for beginners. Most enrollees will have little to no tennis experience. Day Tu Sa Tu Sa

Sometimes the thought of starting a new walking or running plan can be overwhelming. Buckeye Running Company would love to assist you with all your training regimen needs. In the process, you might find yourself asking these questions: Should I make a goal? Absolutely! It is always important to set goals and to make sure these goals are attainable. A good goal for anyone just starting to run is to set the goal of running a 5K (3.1miles). A program I have found to help a lot of people is the “couch-to-5k” program found at coolrunning.com. It gives you specific times and distances to run each week to get you to your goal. Where can I run? At Buckeye Running Company, we offer lots of routes at different distances around the Mason area. Stop in any time to pick up a route for your run that day or week! We offer routes for 5K, 10K, Half, and Full Marathon training plans. What should I wear? You will find that the clothes and shoes you wear can make all the difference. Being properly fit for shoes at Buckeye Running Company will ensure you have the most comfortable and pain free training process possible. We also offer running apparel in Symbiosis located along the Main Street Corridor in Mason Community Center. Let us help your run comfortably. Where can I record my runs? Depending on what program you are doing, sometimes the website you signed up on will offer you a place to record your mileage. If not, you can go to running2win.com. This is a free, user-friendly website that will help your keep track of your runs and paces so you can watch yourself progress! You could also purchase a GPS running watch from Buckeye Running Company that will track all of your runs for you. It will tell you your exact distance, pace, and calorie burn. Where can I find someone to run with? Buckeye Running Company, in partnership with Mason Community Center, offers a training group twice a week. See below for details.

Buckeye Running Training Group Mason Community Center Lobby Buckeye Running Training Group meets 2 days a week at Mason Community Center. Please meet in the front lobby of the center ready to run. All ages, paces, speeds, and distances are welcome. Need for Speed: Runs will lead to the Mason track for drills and speed work. Training Run: 5K, 10K, Half, and Full Marathon training runs are available. Custom programs are available upon request. Day Need for Speed Tu Training Run Sa
