Race To Anyplace To Support A Cure For Leukemia March 9 Event Helps Fund Research to End the Disease
Today, more than ever, our lives feel like we are running a race. We never seem to have enough hours in the day to fit it all in. From the time we wake up in the morning we’re on the go…grabbing a quick workout, taking the kids to school, getting to work, picking up the kids, making sure they get to practice and then home for a late dinner, and if we’re lucky, having a meaningful family conversation to reflect on the day’s events. And, then, just like the movie “Groundhog Day,” we’re off to bed to repeat it all over again. Before our head even hits the pillow, our minds race with complaints wondering where all the time went. To many, what’s described above is a “good” day! For those battling cancer, they long for a “good” day like that. For them, the important race is just to see tomorrow. Their goal is to get away from the sprint of fighting cancer, and they relish the idea of a marathon of a long, healthy life. Fighting blood cancers is the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and it’s a race they can’t run alone. With the help of generous donations, they’ve been able to fund research that has increased survival rates by more than 60% over the last three decades. But, that’s not enough. They want to win—and winning means putting an end to cancer. A 100% survival rate is the goal, so the race is on and that’s where you come in! From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 9, 2013, the 4th annual Race To Anyplace, benefiting LLS, will be held at Mason Community Center. Race To Anyplace is an action-packed, stationary bike event where teams of 4 to 12 riders compete on stationary spin bikes to see who can “ride” the farthest. Every 15 minutes a new rider jumps on as a new heat begins. A DJ plays pumping music to keep the riders motivated and moving. Complimentary food and drinks are provided to keep everyone fueled. There are two levels of competition: competitive and friends/ family. It’s a great event for supporters of all ages and physical abilities…as long as they can reach the pedals! Riders can spend the entire day at the Community Center or just the time it takes them to complete their heats. And, to help everyone pass the time, the Community Center is offering a free day pass for all participants, as well as half-price deals for the participants’ family members. Because of the number of children and adults who have been affected by a blood cancer over the past 10 years in the Mason area, LLS has had fundraising success here. One of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s biggest fundraisers is Light The Night, an evening walk in early fall where supporters and survivors carry illuminated balloons in honor of, support of, or To register, see page 2.
in memory of their loved ones. This event moved to Mason five years ago and has been growing by leaps and bounds since its arrival. Another successful fundraising event for the Mason community has been Pasta for Pennies, a fundraiser in the schools. Mason High School has consistently finished in the top ten schools in the nation for the past several years. While LLS fundraising events raise much-needed money, they also help to raise awareness and put faces to blood cancer. Seven tri-state residents are the Honored Teammates of this year’s Race To Anyplace event: Maya, a Mason resident, (diagnosed with AML in 2011; relapsed in 5/2012), Leah (diagnosed with AML), Luke (diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), Lucy (diagnosed with ALL), Dylan (diagnosed with ALL), Isabella (diagnosed with AML) and Ken, another Mason resident, (diagnosed 7/2005 with AML; relapsed 9/2012). All have been diagnosed with a blood cancer and are considered either cured, in remission, or currently in treatment. Each child hero will be sharing a video of their cancer story at Race, as well as participating throughout the day, to help remind everyone why the money they’ve raised is so important and to show them that it does truly make a difference. “In March, I will be participating in Race To Anyplace for the third year in a row,” vowed Amanda, the oldest daughter of the second Mason resident named above, Ken Murawski. “My father three younger sisters, and I look forward to this event every year to raise money in hopes that in the future other families won’t have to go through this experience. Race To Anyplace, as well as other fundraisers put on by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, has made the experience of having a father with leukemia much more positive than one would think. My whole family is so appreciative of everyone who supports The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” she wrote. After his bone marrow transplant in November, Ken will hopefully be ready to participate at the event as well. The next time you wonder, “Where did the day go?” think about all of the cancer patients who are racing for a healthy tomorrow. You can help that tomorrow become a reality for them by participating in Race To Anyplace on March 9. Won’t you slow down for one day and help put an end to cancer? To learn more about Race To Anyplace, to join the Mason Community Center house team or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society house team, or to start a team of your own, please visit www.racetoanyplace.org/soh. And, if you’d like information on any of the other fundraising campaigns that LLS hosts, or the patient services offered, please visit www.lls.org/soh or call 513.698.2828. February / March 2013

Lessons Through Little Feet Is your child new to swim lessons? Has your 3- or 4-year-old had a difficult time adjusting to swim lessons without a parent? Little Feet Learning Center now includes swim lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. This half-day program has helped many young swimmers adjust to taking swim lessons independently. The program begins at 9 a.m. and gives all participants an opportunity to become comfortable with each other. Then our program instructors escort the group to the pool and participate with them during the lesson time. The comfortable environment makes transitioning into the pool much easier for first time participants. See page 7 for more information about Little Feet Learning Center.

Drawing is the fundamental skill of the visual arts and can give children an academic advantage in the classroom. Young Rembrandts focuses on teaching children to draw using demonstration and a structured stepby-step process. This method of directed drawing gives young students instruction on how to draw increasingly complex images at a crucial time in their development. Through the process of weekly instruction, students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concepts, art history, and mastery of their materials.
Pre-School Drawing Young Rembrandts® pre-school program is designed with the youngest learners in mind. Subjects that youngsters are familiar with, such as animals and toys, are used along with their favorite learning tools— pictures, stories, touching, and doing—to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, fine motor skills, and staying on task. You’ll be amazed at what they create! Day Date M 2/25-4/1 W 2/27-4/3

Mix It Up with Cardio and Strength Cardio workouts are great for several reasons: it helps control stress and increases confidence; it reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol, and obesity; and it can be a fun and social activity to do with family and friends. Completed at high intensity, you can crank away hundreds of calories per workout. The phrase ‘high intensity’ is key as your body quickly adapts to your cardio routine. Increasing time, intensity, and variety are three ways to increase the calorie–torching effects of your cardio workouts. Strength training also has several benefits: stress control, increased confidence, positive body image, functional strength, and a higher basal metabolic rate. Completed at a high intensity, you can burn hundreds of calories during and after your workout. Because muscle takes more calories to sustain, you’ll burn an additional 120 calories per day for every three pounds of muscle you gain. That’s about 10 pounds of fat without changing anything else in your regimen, including your diet. (www.womenshealthmag.com). Gaining three pounds of muscle, then, may be something you want to work toward. Checking total body weight is not a complete or accurate indicator of how well your training is paying off. Body awareness, confidence, strength, clothing size, and tracking your workouts are more rewarding indicators. Gaining those three pounds will take work, of course. A mix of lifting, cardio, and a strong nutrition base are key: Research indicates that the more protein your body stores, the larger your muscles grow. Your body can synthesize roughly 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day. That’s right: shoot for 1 gram of protein per desired body weight to create muscle growth. Total nutritional awareness including carbs, protein, and healthy fats is the easy part. Focusing on large muscle groups, chest, back, glutes, and legs during your workout takes effort, willpower, and dedication. Lifting heavy every other day and allowing the large muscle groups to rest and grow is also key. Your muscles grow when you’re resting, not when you’re working out (www.menshealth.com). So mix it up: if you spend most of your time on cardio equipment, take a walk over to the strength training area or come to a strength-focused class. If you spend all of your time pounding weights, step up to a challenging cardio machine or join a cardio-focused class. Either way, you’ll have a great time, meet new people, and feel stronger and more confident than ever.

LIFESTEPS® Weight Management Program Meeting Room
This medically-inclined approach to your water fitness program is ideal for those with arthritis, Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, or any other joint issues that may benefit from exercise. By using the high resistance and low impact properties of water on your body, you can increase overall muscle strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. This is a basic class for those starting an aquatic exercise program. Led by a certified athletic trainer, Bodies in Balance: Water is more rehab-based exercises compared to a traditional Water Fit class.
The LIFESTEPS Weight Management program is a 12-week weight loss program with proven results. The program helps you incorporate research-based behavior change techniques with healthy eating habits and physical activity. You will meet with a TriHealth registered dietitian in a small group setting each week, receiving the benefits of group support while developing and implementing your own individual plan. Registration includes a session with one of our personal trainers and an individual appointment with the dietitian. For non-members, the program price includes an individual Premier membership to Mason Community Center for the duration of the program and an incentive to continue your membership so you can maintain your physical activity after the program concludes.

A tip from Andy Horn, Golf Pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island This time of year, I get golf-ready by swinging two clubs every night. Spring is right around the corner and I want my golf muscles to be ready. I swing my wedge and sand wedge because they are short and heavy clubs. I start off holding both clubs and swing very slow. Never start fast. Take short slow swings at first and work your way up to a faster and longer swing. Make sure you are in your golf posture as you do this, with your feet as wide as your shoulders and some bend in your hips and back. Maintain your balance as you swing and try to end your swing as you would on the golf course. Make swings every night and you’ll start off the season with good golfing muscles. One other thing I do every off season is putt in my basement. Do this every year and it will help you come spring. Working on your distance control is very helpful and will cut down on three-putts. Hit some long putts across the room and try to get them as close to the wall as possible. Feel the distance. If you practice your swing and putt some, you will start the golfing season in great shape! Good luck.
GYMNASTICS
Gymnastics The City of Mason is pleased to offer state-of-the-art facilities for gymnastics programs. This 8,200 square foot gymnastics area is complete with tumbling tracks, a table vault, and a Resi-Pit-lined gymnastics pit. Students are able to participate recreationally or move on to the competition level with Mason Community Center’s own Mason Twisters. Make-up classes will be scheduled only if the facility is closed for weather or maintenance, or if class is cancelled due to instructor illness. The make-up class will be the corresponding day of the week after the last scheduled class.
Mom and Me This parent and child class will help develop your child's basic motor skills through jumping, skipping, hopping, running, and rolling. You will use beams, wedges, and mats to engage your child through structured play.

VOLLEYBALL
Cold Weather Running Tips by Buckeye Running Company Falling temperatures and fewer daylight hours don’t mean your outdoor running routine has to go into hibernation. Running in cold weather can help shake the winter blues, boost your energy level, and guarantee that you’ll be in better racing (or swim suit) shape when the weather gets warmer. Follow these tips to ensure that you have a safe winter running season. Dress in layers. The key to winter running is to regulate body temperature. This is accomplished by dressing in layers. I adhere to the “20 degree rule.” That is, I look at the temperature, add 20 degrees, and dress for that temperature. You should be a little chilled when you first start running, as your body temperature will rise with exercise. Start with a base layer of clothing. This layer moves moisture away from your body to prevent chill. Cotton won’t work because it retains moisture. If it’s really cold outside, use a mid layer such as polar fleece for insulation. Tights and pants will protect your legs from the elements. Again, these should contain moisturewicking material to keep your legs dry. Tights and pants now come in varying degrees of thickness and some are fleece-lined for insulation on colder runs. Also essential is winter underwear in a moisture management fabric and wind panels in key areas (great for under tights and pants). When the weather gets frigid or wet, it is advisable to add an outer shell or jacket. These offer wind protection and water resistant capabilities, keeping you warm and dry throughout your run. Protect your head, hands, and feet! About 40% of your body heat is lost through your head. As much as 30% of your body heat escapes through your hands and feet. Wearing head gear such a headband or hat will prevent heat loss, so your circulatory system will have more heat to distribute to the rest of your body. Freezing temperatures might require a balaclava or neck warmer. Gloves come in multiple thicknesses and can have additional features, such as a wind layer for additional protection. Proper foot protection is essential. Purchase socks that not only wick moisture, but insulate. Wool is a good choice. Remember, cotton retains moisture and is not a good material for cold weather use. Pay attention to temperature and wind chill. If the wind gets strong, it penetrates your clothes and removes the insulating layer of warm air around you. Start your runs into the wind, before a buildup of moisture (sweat) occurs, and finish with the wind to reduce chill. Know your comfort zone. If the temperature gets below zero, or the wind chill is below -20 degrees, hit the treadmill instead. Everything discussed above is offered at Buckeye Running Company.
