Young Rembrandts focuses on teaching children to draw using demonstration and a structured step-by-step process. This method of directed drawing gives students instructions on how to draw increasingly complex images at a crucial time in their development. Through the process of weekly instruction, students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concept, art history, and mastery of their materials.

Pre-School Drawing Young Rembrandts® pre-school program is designed with the youngest learners in mind. Subjects that youngsters are familiar with, such as animals and toys, are used along with their favorite learning tools— pictures, stories, touching, and doing—to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, fine motor skills, and staying on task. You’ll be amazed at what they create! Day Date M 9/15-10/20 W 9/17-10/22

Member Highlight Success Story - Part 2

I joined the Mason Community Center in May of 2003 and have been an active member ever since. Last year I wrote about my experience at the center and how I had my back operated on for a disc problem, took up yoga for rehab, and then a cycling class for cardio fitness. I lost about 20 pounds. It’s still lost and I haven’t found it yet. Recently, I was thinking about why I love coming to the community center each day. I mean besides the workout, sweating, sore muscles, and stuff. I retired in 2007 and one thing (and the only thing) I miss about working is the people. You get to be like a family after a while, and I think this is what I love about the Mason Community Center. I show up 5 days a week in the morning and leave before lunch. You begin to know the regulars and the employees and it begins to feel like family. You meet and talk to some interesting people and sometimes find out what a small world it really is. Like work, you sometimes meet their spouses and their children. Sometimes people move away or have babies or

go to Florida for the winter, but all usually have a smile and a friendly “good morning.” The instructors are all enthusiastic and fun (OK, they’re all younger than me) and they all seem to come from such exotic places (India, Venezuela, Cleveland). The members I meet are from all over also (Scotland, Poland, China) and it truly is a small world when you find out how many of the same experiences you share. Although my classes are the same, the mix of people (and instructors) is different each day and I like the sense of getting together and doing something we enjoy. I love my fitness family. I really feel like this is an extra benefit that the Mason Community Center offers that not enough people take advantage of. They are missing something special. Still working out and barely breathing hard,

Starter Programs Introduce You to Group Exercise Have you stayed away from a group exercise class because you don’t know what it’s all about? Then we have the solution! Mason Community Center is pleased to offer “starter” programs to introduce you to some of the group exercise class formats. In these introductory classes, you’ll learn about proper form, level of exertion, and general safety guidelines for the class so you’ll feel prepared when you attend your first session. The two starter programs currently offered are Cycle and TRX®. Starter Cycle is for the first-time cyclist. The class begins with tips on footwear, proper bike setup, and water intake. You will then be guided through all the various climbs, jumps, and cadence speeds that are featured in regular cycling drop-in group exercise classes. This class is a great educational experience and workout for everyone. The goal is to start with the basics to be sure that you build your strength and endurance for a safe and effective workout. Starter TRX is an introductory class that will prepare you for our regularly scheduled TRX classes. The class begins with foundational exercises using the suspension straps. You will be instructed on proper form that challenges your major muscle groups. The instructor will help you focus on correct form, safety, and strength training. This program will also feature cardio, flexibility, and balance elements that you will experience in the drop-in group exercise TRX classes. Our goal is to make you feel confident and safe before entering your first class so you can have a fun, safe, and successful experience. These programs are a great way for new participants to break down any intimidation barriers they may have had before taking a class.

PERSONAL TRAINING

Why You Should Be Doing Chin-ups

Personal Training Fitness Center

By Kevin Furay, Personal Trainer at Mason Community Center Do you include chin-ups or pull-ups in your fitness routine? Simple and unassuming, the pull-up bar may be one of the most important pieces of fitness equipment that you use. This may seem shocking, since it pales in comparison to the latest and greatest shiny gadget in the gym. But for all its simplicity, it can give you a killer workout and transform your body. Your whole upper body gets a workout when you do chin-ups, with the muscles in your back, biceps and abs getting most of the benefit. The chin-up has been called the upper body squat, and trainer Bret Contreras observed, “When I conducted my EMG studies, I was shocked to find that the bodyweight chin-up led to the highest levels of lower rectus abdominis activation. It surpassed every ab exercise imaginable – even ab wheel rollouts and hanging leg raises.” When you do chin-ups and pull-ups, you will know immediately that you are getting a great workout. They are hard. But they are worth all the effort!

What is a chin-up and pull-up? The way to perform this exercise is to hang on a horizontal bar with your arms straight, and then lift yourself up until your chin passes over the top of the bar. The difference between chin-ups and pull-ups is the grip you use. When your palms face away from you as you grip the bar, you are doing a pull-up. This is the harder of the two, using more of your back muscles. The chin-up is a little easier, with your palms facing you. This uses less of your back and more of your biceps.

How to get started If you can already do chin-ups, congratulations! You are in great shape! If you are just beginning, be patient. It will take some time to condition your body to be able to complete a chin up. Try the following suggestions to begin building up the strength you need: • Rows & Pulldowns. These are great for building the back strength that is required to successfully master the chin-up. A row is a pull-type, compound exercise which works primarily your middle back, but also works your Latissimus and muscles in your arms. A pulldown is very similar to a pull-up, but you pull down on a bar or piece of equipment. • Dead hang. This is a good conditioning exercise for the true beginner. Simply hang from the bar. This will work your muscles and begin strengthening your grip. • Assisted chin-up. Put your feet on a chair to give you a little assistance as you raise your chin over the bar. Only use the chair for as much support as you absolutely need. • Negative chin-up. Use a chair to boost yourself up to the bar, and then use your arms to steadily and with great control lower yourself to the ground. Control is the name of the game here— come down as slowly as you can. Chin-ups are a great way to take your fitness and strength to the next level. Give it a try, and let me know how you do!

Caution! While I love the chin-up for all the reasons discussed above (and more), I must warn anyone with shoulder dysfunction – this exercise is NOT for you. Be sure to have a fitness professional who is trained in movement screening assess your shoulders prior to performing chin-ups or any overhead exercise. To Your Success,

Golf

Proper Alignment Improves your Game Most golfers struggle with alignment. Picture a set of railroad tracks running to your target, your ball being on the outside rail, your body parallel to the inside rail. Incorrect alignment will cause golfers to hit shots either too far right or too far left of their target. When practicing, lay down alignment sticks (dowel rods work great) to help with the visual of lining up correctly. Another trick is to pick a spot not more than a couple of inches in front of your ball and align your clubface to that spot (the target line) and your body parallel to your target line. Correct alignment will, in the long run, help a golfer to swing on the correct swing path, thus eliminating shots that go too far left or too right of the target. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play "real tennis" before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills and basic strategy - all in a fun, stimulating environment.

There is no make-up for classes missed by the participant. In case of inclement weather conditions, lessons will be hosted in the Field House at Mason Community Center. Please call the City of Mason hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program delays or relocations due to weather.

Pee Wees This class is for beginners. Most enrollees will have little to no tennis experience. Time 6:00-7:00P 10:00-11:00A 6:00-7:00P 10:00-11:00A
