A message from the Lord Mayor of Newcastle On 1 March 2020, we celebrated the 90th year of operation for the Civic Theatre and City Hall, two magnificent public assets, which literally and figuratively take pride of place in the heart of our city. We were fortunate indeed with the timing of those celebrations, less than two weeks later, life as we knew it was turned on its head. I am immensely proud of how our city and its citizens have faced the challenges of 2020 and am delighted we now get to look forward with great anticipation to a new year filled with promise. Few industries have been harder hit by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic than the performing arts and its many associated businesses. I’d like to commend the team at the Civic Theatre on their superb response to the adaptations which had to take place. Reprogramming, refunding and reassuring ticketholders became a part of every day. Remarkably, in the midst of this, the team also launched a new ticketing system, heralding a new direction for the Civic Theatre, after 25 years with Ticketek. In further evidence of
their adaptive and responsive approach, in September, the Civic Theatre was fitted with a state-of-the art 7.5m widescreen and digital projector to bring cinema back to the Civic and back to the city. I am proud to say, City of Newcastle has adopted a highly proactive response to help mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on the creative and performing arts. We have introduced a wide range of programs and grants to support the arts, culture and heritage sectors of the city, which will ensure we enter 2021 with a vibrant program of events. Not least will be the Civic Theatre Subscription Season, a perennial highlight on the arts calendar. It is my pleasure to officially launch the season and I look forward to seeing you at shows throughout 2021. Nuatali Nelmes Lord Mayor of Newcastle

Welcome to Season 2021 Our 2021 Subscription Season is all about resetting and looking forward and we invite our audiences to do just that. We know there was disappointment when several highly anticipated shows in Season 2020 could not be staged. The great news is, we’ve been able to reprogram many of the highlights and we’re proud to reintroduce them here for 2021, along with a number of new offerings. We can already hear the collective cheers of jubilation that Season 2021 will include standout favourites The Gospel According to Paul, The Wharf Revue, Shake & Stir’s Animal Farm, Bizet’s Carmen from Opera Australia, and both the Melbourne and Sydney comedy festivals. We’re delighted to announce local productions, Awkward from Catapult Dance and Do Your Parents Know You’re Straight? from Bearfoot Theatre, will feature in February, as part of New Annual – a festival presented by City of Newcastle. In a year of pivoting, I’m proud to say our team has pivoted with the best of them. The new Civic Theatre ticketing system
means we can offer patrons improvements in terms of service, seat selection and booking fees. A fabulous innovation which has come about thanks to the COVID restrictions has been the introduction of online food and beverage ordering options, which you can read more about in this brochure. The “Beyond the Stage” concept, first introduced in 2019, continues to flourish and, with the purchase of the digital cinematography equipment for the Civic Theatre, the entertainment options we can offer in 2021 are better than ever. A lesson we all learned in lockdown is the power of connectivity and the unrelenting need for belonging and storytelling. I’m honoured to present a Subscription Season and associated activities which answer those needs and so much more. Finally, a very special thank you to our sponsors, Crosbie Wealth, Jennings Print and Hunter Parking and Storage. Leonie Wallace Theatre Manager

Awkward Experience the wit and wisdom of the socially awkward. Smarting from a pick-up line that bombed? Tongue tied at meeting strangers? Last party over before the late news starts? A group of people come to a party, having been invited by friends of the host. They don’t know each other. They don’t know anyone else at the party. They don’t even know whose house it is, and their friends don’t show up. Sound familiar? Set at a party Awkward follows the story of a bunch of characters with distinctive personalities meeting for the first time: the introvert, extrovert, the hanger-on, and the in-lust. What can go wrong? Enjoy this new dance theatre work by Catapult.

In many ways, Casey Miller is a regular teenager with a passion for writing stories. But Casey has a secret ... he’s straight. Feeling isolated, the aspiring author creates a friend – Riley, a lesbian girl who lives in an opposite world (not unlike our own) where heterosexuality is normality. Riley operates as a reflection of Casey, as he documents twisted versions of his reality through her eyes. But Riley can’t always be happy – not when Casey’s not ... because that’s not fair.

The Gospel According to Paul Written and performed by Jonathan Biggins One of Australia’s favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, is Paul Keating – visionary, reformer and rabblerouser. Full of insight, intelligence and wit, The Gospel According to Paul is the smash hit comedy about a critical time in Australian history and the man who shaped it. Note from Jonathan Biggins: In all my years writing and performing for the Wharf Revue, one character has remained a constant favourite of the audience: Paul Keating. Love him or hate him, he is universally recognised as a leader who not only had a vision for Australia but could articulate it, fight for it and, most importantly, deliver it. I can’t think of a more entertaining or significant figure in recent Australian history with whom to spend an evening. All iceberg, no tip.

Animal Farm by George Orwell Shocking, relevant and wickedly funny Pig in now to avoid disappointment. Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries, returns in a multi-award winning, critically acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairytale allegorises and satirises communist governments, while illustrating, with stunning simplicity, how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life, free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.

Impermanence Sydney Dance Company’s full-length work, Impermanence is Rafael Bonachela’s newest creation. Contemporary composer, Bryce Dessner has created a new score, full of emotional power. Best known as a founder of American rock band The National and for his film scores for The Revenant and The Two Popes, Dessner was initially inspired by the tragedy of the Australian bushfires and the Notre Dame fire in Paris. Performed live on stage by the Australian String Quartet, and the full power of Sydney Dance Company’s ensemble, this is an epic, driven performance that packs an emotional punch. When COVID-19 struck in March 2020, Impermanence was only four days from its world premiere. After a tumultuous year, Sydney Dance Company bring it to the stage for the first time in 2021, now with added poignancy. Experience the power of dance and music performed live together, laden with meaning, fleeting and vulnerable. When Ash loses his best friend Bear to suicide, he starts to idolise Vaudevillian stuntman The Great Peters, and Peters’ ability to jump from bridges with a rope around his neck and survive. Ultimately the fabled stuntman’s death proves to Ash the trick is just that - an impossible dream to follow, waking him from a haze of grief to find his own path to survival. Written by leading Australian actor Ursula Yovich and featuring Legs On The Wall’s awe-inspiring aerial wizardry, this bold and tender portrait of survival melds text with daring physicality, and moving sound, set and video design.
