T
he future of golf at Sandhill Crane is without limits. There are no boundaries for our potential to grow the game of golf, create lifelong memories and provide social activities for all. As you may have heard, there has been quite a bit of construction going on at the City’s golf course. This is the result of great vision that began when staff, residents, elected officials and even the business community gave valuable input to shape what the future of golf will look like in Palm Beach Gardens.
We have opportunities for every person in the community to enjoy “The Public’s Golf Club.”
Our new facility will be the perfect place to learn, socialize and play. You don’t have to be a golfer to find something to enjoy here. The clubhouse is a true social center where families and friends will be able to utilize event space for parties, weddings and other life celebrations. Avid golfers will be able to play on our pristine golf course surrounded by a natural preserve.
I am excited that for the first time in my career, I will be able to use my full skill set, which has been developed through my PGA training and my love for the game of golf over the last 15 years. My title and areas of responsibility may have changed, but my foundational approach will remain the same. I will continue to focus on growing the game, creating an atmosphere of fun for

A pair of Sandhill Cranes explore the golf course at Sandhill Crane Golf Club
Years ago, swamp land west of the City was developed, and municipal golf course operations were carved out amid 141 acres wetlands and preservation areas. The golf course was built in 1991 by the City and assigned to a management company to run the day-to-day operations. By the early 2000s, it became evident that a change was needed, and the wheels were put in motion to improve operations. Under the current administration, the City resumed control after the reputation of the course failed to flourish. With facilities in disrepair, equipment neglected, and no revenue being reinvested into the course, Palm Beach Gardens Municipal Golf Course was not living up to the quality expected in a town known to many as “The Golf Capital of the World.” 6

Over the next several years, the golf course gradually improved. The City completed a turf renovation in 2013 to increase the stature of the course. This decision resulted in a rapid return on investment. A reevaluation of the business plan revealed that in addition to adequate maintenance and protection of the City’s investment in the turf, there needed to be a plan to help sustain the golf course beyond rounds of golf sold. Last year the golf course sold over 44,000 rounds of golf. The potential was evident for the facility to capitalize on the social side of golf and to expand the facility to fulfill an event space need that did not exist in any City owned buildings. The golf course was rebranded with the name Sandhill Crane Golf Club in 2016

as planning began for the construction of the new clubhouse. The new clubhouse is approximately 22,000- square feet in size with more than 15,000 of those under air. That means there is ample patio and balcony space surrounding the building. The outdoor space allows for significant overhangs and staging areas to offer shelter from the weather and includes the cart barn. A pro shop, locker rooms, food and beverage services, and an event space to accommodate 200 people (banquet-style seating) is part of the space, as well. “This has been an exciting project for the city,” says Project Manager Charlotte Presensky. “Keeping the community in mind, the facility serves as a destination not only for the golfer but the general public to enjoy the amazing amenities.”

With a grand porte cochère at its entrance, the golf clubhouse sits prominently at the end of the golf club’s main entrance. The “artic white” and “coconut husk” hues of the exterior paint make a poignant pairing against the backdrop of blue skies and green fairway. Twin Canary Island date palms frame the entryway which features support columns covered in gorgeous neutral toned stonework. Immediately upon stepping through the front doors of the clubhouse’s ground floor, the public is treated to a grand front foyer. The bronze Sandhill Crane sculpture that
once greeted visitors to the course, and that is the namesake for the rebranding of the facility, now sits on a cypress stump and has been encapsulated in stone work. It is now part of a living art wall installation that exhibits gorgeous photos of the golf course and will be used to communicate facility information to guests. The video art wall is an 8 x 11.5 ft. surface mounted LED panel that was custom designed for the clubhouse entrance by focus4media. This art wall will cycle through morning and sunset images of nature and wildlife found nearby using technology made possible through the company’s Visual Solutions. (continues)

you have there, Bebe and I wanted to pull those natural elements inside,” explains Pararo. “We used natural stacked stone on the outside, then used those same elements of stone and natural materials in the interior design.”
The second floor of the clubhouse features a ballroom/meeting room space that can accommodate 200 people for banquet style seating overlooking the golf course.
The layout of the clubhouse is the result of a design/build approach with father & son architectural team Rick and Ricardo Gonzalez at the helm. With twenty-five years of experience, the firm is responsible for other notable projects in the South Florida region, such as the exclusive Pine Club Sporting Club in West Palm Beach and the clubhouse for the City of Miami Beach on Alton Road. The firm looked at clubhouses all over the country when seeking inspiration for what would be the best look for Sandhill Crane. “We were inspired by three areas,” says President of REG Architects Rick Gonzalez. “The natural environment at Sandhill Crane is beautiful. We practice architecture with historic reference, so we used the Florida components such as the metal roofs and stucco. And we looked at the historic lodges in great places of the past that are found in North Carolina and Colorado.” Gonzalez noted that conversations with City staff lead to important design elements of the clubhouse, such as locating the meeting room/ballroom space on the second floor to capitalize on the view of the golf course and surrounding nature. “We wanted to capitalize on the natural areas that will be open to the public,” Gon8

Pararo points out that all the hard elements of the architecture need to be softened. The duo used natural looking patterns and shades to give the rooms a warmer, softer contrast. The brown, taupe and creme hues are of a soft pallet reminiscent of the natural colors of the setting. The flooring throughout the facility moves harmoniously from ceramic wooden plank to limestone tile to carpet.

Highlights of the facility’s interior design are the chandeliers, chair rail, complimenting draperies in the ballroom and the dark granite bar top where patrons will face the limestone back bar, giving the restaurant a cozy, intimate feel. “We have a first class golf course, now we have a first class facility to go along with it that was built with economy in mind,” adds Mayor Maria Marino. “It will be a gathering place for family and friends and anyone from the community. We will have vistas that show off the open space that makes the City of Palm Beach Gardens so special.”

When it comes to the interior design of the facility, the impression made by the natural environment of the clubhouse was echoed by Stephen Pararo, co-designer for the project and President of Pineapple House Interior Design. Along with designer Bebe Mengistu, the firm is responsible for the look and feel of the clubhouse outside of its architectural elements. “The site and the setting really dictated the feel and thrust of the interior. The natural setting of the preserve that the building is placed in and the views that

Unfavorable weather conditions of record rainfall and Hurricane Irma have delayed construction of the clubhouse somewhat; however, at press time for this issue, the project was roaring across the finish line with mere days left to completion. An early February opening date has been set, with an Open House Celebration planned as the first scheduled public event for the facility. The Open House Celebration will take place on Sunday, February 18 from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. at 11401 Northlake Boulevard. The public is invited to attend a fun-filled day of family activities, food and tours of the new facility.

JOURNEYS ositioned at the entrance of Benjamin High School on Grandiflora Road and Central Boulevard is a unique piece of art, a bronze sculp-
ture entitled Journeys. At first glance, its eccentric arches and curves are obscure and mysterious. A closer look reveals an intricate depiction of human figures, children and adults, flowing together harmoniously; a representation of the celebration of life and the evolution of children becoming adults. Measuring approximately 8 ½ feet tall and 14 ½ feet and 10 ½ feet in length and width, Journeys differs from other sculptures of its kind. Unlike other sculptures that are traditionally cast in molten bronze, this sculpture was created using large sheets of bronze which were formed, rolled, and welded into shape, giving the sculpture a

lighter and more fluid appearance. As the bronze ages, it will oxidize and develop a soft, green patina that will transform the sculpture, enhancing its distinctive appearance. Created by world renowned sculptor, John Raimondi, the location of this art piece was carefully selected. Its location is appropriate, given that educational institutions serve as the foundation of a child’s journey from adolescence to adulthood. Like all the art pieces throughout Palm Beach Gardens, Journeys is a noteworthy addition to the Arts in Public Places Program. As it represents the celebration of life and evolution of children, it too will evolve and transform in the years to come.

erhaps one of the most anticipated upgrades at Sandhill Crane Golf Club is the event space and the debut of a full-service restaurant that will be a new part of operations! The Dancing Crane Restaurant will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner options to the public daily. GCF Enterprises, headed by James Gelfand, is the managing firm responsible for everything from day-to-day operation of the restaurant to event and catering services. The team behind GCF Enterprises has over

70 years of combined past catering and special event experience at The Grand Bay Hotel, The Registry Resort, The Diplomat Resort, PGA National Resort & Spa, Mara-Lago, Lowes Vantana Canyon, Equinox, and Salamander Resort & Spa. Residents, visitors and businesses will be able to host a multitude of events at the clubhouse utilizing the second-floor ballroom or the ample open-air space. Weddings, quinceaneras, life celebrations, bar or bat Mitzvahs, luncheons, corporate events, office meetings, holiday parties; the list goes
on. Both indoor and outdoor requests can be accommodated. Full audiovisual support is also available on site. The Dancing Crane’s Culinary Direction
O
ur direction will, of course, be guided by the feedback and requests from our guests. That said, The Dancing Crane will open with menus that reflect many of my favorite foods and styles of cooking designed with our team’s core values in mind. Our goal is simple, really good food. Every time. We will accomplish this with scratch cooking of recognizable foods that will be presented uniquely, and service that makes all feel welcome and comfortable. I look forward to being the bridge that connects all who dine at The Dancing Crane with the great local farms and fisherman we are so fortunate to have at our doorstep. I have tasted my way around the world, always searching for innovation and flavors to bring home and call my own. That journey has helped me sew together a global culinary “quilt” that defines who I am as a chef. The center of my inspiration starts at home here in the south. I love the big, bold flavors from New Orleans to Charleston. We hope to build a smokehouse on property, so we can cure and smoke our own Tasso, bacon, brisket, ribs, pastrami and smoked fish. Many vegetables will also be kissed with a blend of Applewood and Hickory smoke that will make The Dancing Crane’s menus sing harmoniously with a southern accent. It won’t all be southern fare. From fresh pulled mozzarella and heirloom toma-
to salad to jerk chicken and pigeon peas, tastes from Italy, France, Spain, Asia and the Caribbean will all be found on the menus throughout the seasons. Bread is another hugely important part of me. I plan on capturing and cultivating wild yeast that will be the foundation and unique flavor that can never be replicated anywhere else. Smoked Onion Brioche, Black Pepper and Cheddar Pretzel, and Buttermilk-Scallion Sourdough, to name a few, that will find their way into our signature bread basket and hug many of our sandwiches.
I also have a sweet tooth that drives another passion, dessert! Warm, housemade donuts to go with your after-dinner coffee, or our own ice creams and sorbets that will make our banana split sundaes and craft root beer floats a heavenly finish for all. We hope the variety of flavor and fun will leave everyone wanting to return to The Dancing Crane time and time again.

Elevate Your Golf Game GOLF LEARNING CENTER
T
here is good news for all the golfers out there who are looking to improve their golf game. In the very near future, the City’s golf course amenities will include one of the most technologically advanced golf learning centers open to the public. Whether you are a golfer that needs a minor swing adjustment or are looking for a long-term improvement plan, the Golf Learning Center will be your secret weapon to enhancing your golf skills. Construction wrapped on the Golf Learning Center, a 2,350-square foot facility in early February as visitors of Sandhill Crane Golf Club anxiously awaited. If you have visited the City’s golf course lately, you know it has been abuzz with multiple construction projects. The Golf Learning Center is located adjacent to the driving range. The Center is designed specifically to allow for group training with four distinct training areas set up for simultaneously instruction. Each area has a specific training purpose and focus to build a complete golfer with putting, full swing analysis, swing training & conditioning and golf IQ enhancement. The Sandhill Crane Golf Learning Center will be operated to meet every level of participation from private instruction to high performance training to corporate teambuilding opportunities in conjunction with the amenities at the new clubhouse.

The Putting Area features three fully immersive training stations, a putting green, and a SAMM Putt Labs Radar System. This comprehensive putting system, with 26 different training modules, measures and analyzes all movement details of a putter stroke, providing valuable data to pinpoint areas that need improvement. The Full Swing Analysis Area features three hitting bays that analyze every aspect of a full swing. A state-of-the-art Trackman Radar and Simulator creates a realistic golfing experience, while the Swing Catalyst system plates provide a detailed analysis of a swing. Range and putting green lighting was installed in November 2017 by Musco Lighting. The bunker lighting system lights the ball so that a golfer can fully visualize the flight while practicing. Additional lighting illuminates the range area and practice greens. This new enhancement makes daylight savings worries a thing of the past in the fall and winter months. Now that the driving range is lit, golf play is not limited to daylight hours. The driving range is lighted until 8:30 p.m. with ball flight visible during this time.

ick Macsuga has had turfgrass on his mind a good deal lately. The 17-year-old junior golfer has his sights set on what will be his first trip outside of the United States when he journeys 4,200 miles to Edinburgh, Scotland along with his team this summer to participate in a Junior Ryder Cup tournament. “Those courses are different. They’re dry, that’s all I know”, says Nick. “They’re dry and hilly and windy.” His strategy is simple. He plans to step up his practice time between now and the summer. And his goal is to locate local links style courses to prepare for Edinburgh – which is different than the golf courses traditionally found in America. Nick says he is looking forward to playing in three or four tournaments while there, which will give him valuable exposure to competing on an international level. It will also afford him the opportunity to see the pros in action overseas.
This will come in handy for the teen golfer who has his sights set firmly on being on the PGA Tour one day. Golf is not just a hobby for Nick. He is a regular fixture at the Sandhill Crane Golf Club where he is firmly one of the top ranked junior golfers in that club’s program. As a member of Sandhill Crane’s Junior Golf Team, he has been part of the local success for the course. Last year the team won the title of SFPGA North Region Champions, making them region’s team to beat now with over 5 Championship titles under their belt. This July, twenty junior golfers (ages 8-17) from Sandhill Crane Golf Club will compete in a Junior Ryder Challenge tournament in Edinburgh, as well as playing spectator at the 2018 British Open. With many of the program’s participants ranging in socioeconomic backgrounds, this experience would not be possible for many of the program’s participants without the fundraising efforts currently underway by PBGYAA and Sandhill
Crane Golf Club. The Honda Classic Cares has included the team’s fundraising efforts in this year’s Birdies for Children program to assist with the cost of travel and accommodations for the City’s young athletes. To cover all expenses for travel and lodging, these athletes must raise a total of $75,000. Every little bit adds up and all levels of support are appreciated.
