Hello and welcome!

to our famous Granny Smith Festival

Hello and welcome to the famous Granny Smith Festival – a fun-filled community event which celebrates the life and legacy of one of our most famous citizens, Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith. With more than 90,000 people expected in Eastwood, the Granny Smith Festival is now one of the largest street festivals in Sydney. This year’s festival takes on added significance as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Granny Smith apple. I am sure when Granny Smith first grew her famous tangy green apple in 1868 she wouldn’t have expected it to be the focus of such a wonderful festival 150 years later. This year’s festival is full of wonderful free entertainment for the whole family. For the kids we have Hi-5 performing at 12.00pm and 2.00pm, while festival-goers will also get the chance to meet and greet with Granny at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm, and receive a free bag of apples thanks to our Apple Sponsor, Woolworths.

We also have a huge concert finale kicking off at 6.00pm with Soul Nights warming up the crowd before our closing artist, Samantha Jade, takes the stage at 7.00pm. The sky will then be lit up with a dazzling firework display at 8.00pm. I would also encourage everyone to take a stroll and soak in the atmosphere of this great event by sampling the offerings from over 200 stalls. In particular, I would highly recommend checking out our new Granny’s Cider Bar, located just between Eastwood Oval and the train station. A reminder that there’ll be no single-use plastic bags, straws or plastic water bottles at this year’s festival. Please bring your own water bottle and refill throughout the day at our Sydney Water stations. A big thank you to all of our Festival sponsors, with a special mention to RMA Eastwood, which has once again come on board as our Platinum sponsor. I hope you all have a great day and enjoy all the fun of the Granny Smith Festival. Clr Jerome Laxale City of Ryde Mayor

GRANNY SMITH HISTORY

Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith was a local. She and her husband Thomas had a farm in Eastwood, near the Field of Mars. It was here, in 1868 that she ‘accidentally’ grew the first Granny Smith apples, when some crab apple seeds sprouted in the compost heap, and she recognised them as a new kind of seedling. Today these tangy green apples are grown, eaten and enjoyed throughout the world. Granny Smith would have been astonished! This year we celebrate 150 years of the Granny Smith apple!

GRAND STREET PARADE The festivities kick off at 9.30am with a 2,000-strong Grand Street Parade celebrating our vibrant and diverse community. The streets of Eastwood are transformed into a swirling sea of colour and sound featuring some of the best marching bands, community floats, dancers and of course don’t forget to wave to Granny and our festival mascot ‘Sweetie Pie’ on the Granny Smith Festival float as they pass by! The best spot to view the parade is on Rowe Street so follow the purple parade route shown on the map (pg 8) and grab your spot early.
