ANZAC DAY Dawn Service and Breakfast

4 April to July Calendar

We have just finished up a successful series of events like the Salisbury Fringe Carnival, the Salisbury Community Fun Day at The Paddocks, Harmony Week and International Women’s Day.

Play a Day in Salisbury

It’s great to see people coming in droves to these events, which activate our public spaces, provide unique business opportunities to local traders and of course, bring a whole lot of fun for everyone.

8 What’s on in the School Holidays

Autumn is the perfect time for you to discover your own backyard between these events. The weather is a little cooler, compared to summer, and there are our natural escapes to get lost in, like our meandering wetlands, long walking trails and reserves and parks.

10 Cycle Circles around Salisbury 12 Salisbury Community Health Expo 13 Pooraka Farm Community Fun Day 14 Watershed Creative Prize Exhibition 15 Community Centres & Libraries

In this edition, we’re talking playgrounds! We’ve handpicked the perfect play spaces around our City and have designed a day tour for you and your family to enjoy. The tour stops at some of our very best playgrounds, activity spaces, a dog park (so bring your fur-baby along) and we’ve even factored in a great picnic stop, where you can break up the fun time with a well-deserved rest. I love that Discover Salisbury highlights great experiences from right here in our City – and many of these are free! Flick through this guide and take a look at all the opportunities to get out, be active and try a new place. There’s no question that local is always better, next time you’re out and about and looking for somewhere to stop for a bite to eat or a coffee – make it a point to go local. We’re well and truly blessed to have so many hardworking businesses, which vary from fresh food markets, to cafes and other eateries, or retail and services. All it takes is your support to keep them open and producing great things. If you love a business the best thing you can do is support them and tell others about them to help spread the word near and far. I wish you a beautiful autumn season and I trust that you will find this program handy in your weekend planning.

PLAY

A DAY IN SALISBURY

The ultimate playground tour

Most parents have experienced that moment when you’re trying to get from A to B and you pass a playground only to hear those distant cries from the backseat pleading for an impromptu playtime. It’s true that we have some fantastic play spaces here in the City of Salisbury and St Kilda Adventure Playground is probably the crown jewel, but there’s still plenty of others you might not have heard of. In this edition of Discover Salisbury, we’ve decided to swing the spotlight on some of the other great spaces where you can play, be active and get exploring. We’ve gone and done the hard work for you and created a mini driving tour packed full of playgrounds and outdoor activities for a free family day out.

1. Carisbrooke Park, Salisbury Park Main North Road, Salisbury Park

5. Bridgestone Reserve Frost Road, Salisbury South

Carisbrooke Park is the first in a series of reserves at Salisbury Park that is linked by the Little Para River and walking trails.

Next to our new world-class Bridgestone Athletics Centre is Bridgestone Reserve, home to another fantastic adventure playground. Tyre company Bridgestone, donated the land to Council to use for the community when their local manufacturing ceased.

Ample play equipment at the park includes multiple swings, carousels, climbing equipment, monkey bars, sandpits and slippery dips. The massive grassed areas are perfect for sport and picnics with family and friends.

2. Harry Bowey Reserve, Salisbury Park Riversdale Drive, Salisbury Park

Along with the two spacious parklands, is a huge playground with flying foxes, an ambulance and fire truck, a spider web rope climb, a rock climbing wall and plenty of swings and things that spin.

Harry Bowey Reserve is only a short 1.2km walk from Carisbrooke Park, or is accessible via Riversdale Drive.

6. Cobbler Creek Recreation Park Cobbler Creek Reserve, Cobbler Circuit, Salisbury

Harry Bowey Reserve features an impressive range of play equipment including a twin flying fox, a toddler slide, a big swing, two mid-sized climbing frames and two smaller rope climbing frames, a traditional merry go round, a small spinning seat and a double swing set. Toilet facilities and barbecue areas are available.

This playground is well-suited to school aged children as well as younger ones. This upgraded recreation park also comes with over 17km of mountain/BMX paths for riders of all abilities – so take your bikes.

3. Jenkins Reserve, Salisbury Park Saints Road, Salisbury Park Follow the Little Para Walking Trail to Jenkins Reserve. Originally the land was once an extensive orange grove and vineyard named after the pioneering Jenkins Family. Today, it’s a great spot if you’ve brought your fourlegged friend along for the ride. Let them loose in the fully enclosed dog-friendly play park. Dogs will love exploring the smells and playing on the jumps, steps, tunnels, slippery dip and drinking trough with pergola. Shaded seating is provided for dog owners. You can also kick the football or set up the stumps on the green space, which is bordered by towering gumtrees.

At the end of the bike path you’ll arrive at the playground’s best features, like the birdsnest themed climbing and viewing structures. This theme carries on to the huge sandpit, which appears as a birdsnest from above. Enjoy the tall slides, a stand-on flying fox, rockbed, swings and a jungle of natural features to explore. The Cobbler Circuit is a creek trail nestled between Main North and Bridge Roads in Salisbury. The Reserve connects to this quiet path surrounded by native grasses and river red gumtrees, which create a natural canopy over visitors. Together with the sounds of the gently flowing creek and no buildings in sight, it’s easy to feel like you’re somewhere otherworldly. With the striking red earth cliffs, you may even feel like Indiana Jones setting out on an adventure in an unknown land! Finally, finish back at Carisbrooke Park

4. Salisbury Oval Playground Brown Terrace, Salisbury North This epic, colourful playground is for the older and more adventurous kids, with an enormous slide tower and a maze of see-through tunnels to climb through. The playground also includes a flying fox, swings, giant see saw, carousel, nature play elements, trampoline squares, sand pit and rock-climbing wall. For the fitness lovers wanting to squeeze in a workout while the kids are playing, there is fitness equipment close-by, as well as a multi-use sports court and a grassed area. This is the perfect spot to stop for lunch, with a BBQ and picnic setting and toilets available too. discoversalisbury.com.au

Cycle circ around S This is your sign to get pedaling along some of Salisbury’s stellar cycling trails. Whether you like to do it in style wearing a jersey and lycra – or take it easy in casual wear – there so much to explore in our City on a bike. We’re so lucky to have plenty of self-guided trails and our social group Cycle Salisbury, for those looking to meet other bike-loving people and tick off the trails on our 103km network.

Self-guided tours Cobbler Creek There are multiple trails within Cobbler Creek Recreation Park. Within the City of Salisbury, the Cobbler Creek trail runs from Salisbury Heights within the Cobbler Creek corridor, just below Bridge Road to Main North Road. Riders can follow trails within the Cobbler Creek Recreation Park that take you to roads within Salisbury Heights heading west, and link into the Little Para River Trail.

Dry Creek The Dry Creek Trail runs through the City of Salisbury from Down Drive at Valley View, through Walkley Heights, Pooraka and Mawson Lakes to Globe Derby. There are off road crossings at Briens Road, Main North Road and Port Wakefield Road, and the railway line at Mawson Lakes. There is also a short on-road section at Pratt Avenue, Pooraka. The Dry Creek Trail connects to the Little Para River Trail behind Globe Derby. Please note that the cycling/ pedestrian underpass at Port Wakefield Road/Globe Derby is affected by tides. An underpass (dry weather only) has been constructed under Montague and Main North Road, Pooraka allowing for a continuation along the trail rather than negotiating two road crossings.

rcles Salisbury The Little Para River Trail The Little Para River Trail is the most significant trail in the City of Salisbury. It takes riders on a mainly flat 12km trail (apart from a short on-road detour at Porter Street) from Carisbrooke Park (next to Main North Road) beyond Port Wakefield Road and links with the Tapa Marinthi Yala shared use path.

Tapa Marinthi Yala The Tapa Martinthi Yala shared use path follows the Northern Connector motorway, between The Northern Expressway (from Gawler) in the north to the South Rd, Port River Expressway Interchange in the south. It links to the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway (North) and Port River Bikeway (South).

Find maps and brochures for each of these trails on the City of Salisbury website – salisbury.sa.gov.au/cyclesalisbury
