Gillian Aldridge, OAM Mayor of Salisbury There’s no slowing down during autumn if you are part of our vibrant City of Salisbury community. With so many events marking our calendar, it’s easy to find something to do, whether you’re young or not so young. Our Salisbury Plays program, designed to encourage you to head outdoors and discover the many wonderful parks in our region, continues throughout autumn. On Sunday, 14 April, Mawson Lakes will host a range of free activities, including sports, games competitions and live performances. Perhaps the most anticipated event is the Carp Fishing Competition, organised by the Game Fishing Club of South Australia. All you need to do is bring your own rod and bait, sign up on the day and compete for some great prizes. The prestigious Watershed Art Prize is open for entries and there will be an exhibition of the submitted works at the John Harvey Gallery, 12 James Street, Salisbury from 3 May to 7 June. Of course we will also be marking Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Salisbury War Memorial again this year.

Mother’s Day music at Salisbury Memorial Park
This Mother’s Day, 12 May 2019, the Salisbury Memorial Park, will be filled with the soothing sounds of acoustic musicians and choirs paying tribute to mothers, grandmothers and other special women. Mother’s Day can be a difficult day for some families, particularly for those who’ve lost their loved ones. It will be the first time the Salisbury Memorial Park has invited musicians to help commemorate Mother’s Day and families are welcome to stay and enjoy the ambience that will be created. “Mother’s Day is a special day and for those visiting the Salisbury Memorial Park,
the music will help create a feeling of tranquillity and love,” said City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge, OAM.
The Mother’s Day music will be enjoyed from 9am till 1pm. www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/ memorialpark
Salisbury Memorial Park is on the corner of Spains Road and York Terrace Salisbury Downs, opposite the Chidda Railway Station. It offers wide open spaces, perfumed and vibrant rose gardens and green lawns, making it a tranquil resting place. Salisbury Memorial Park opened in 1931, when Annie Jane Argent, was laid to rest on 31 December. It is run by the City of Salisbury. It is a non-denominational cemetery offering a selection of individual graves, nice wall memorials, a mausoleum and special memorial dedications.

A total of $8000 is offered, with first prize winning $5000, second prize $2500 and $500 for the Young Emerging Artist.
In 2018, Gerhard Ritter won the prize with his painting The Night Watch, featuring a flock of pelicans. He took the name from Rembrandt’s famous work and says his theme centred around a group of individuals joining together to protect the environment and local wildlife, similar to the Salisbury Council and community. Mr Ritter, started painting in 2003 at the age of 53. He encourages artists to ‘paint, paint, paint’. “Work hard, do not cut corners, ensure you get the basics right,” he said. Entry forms are available on the City of Salibury website www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/ watershedartprize

City of Salisbury’s commitment to water conservation The City of Salisbury is committed to an ongoing strategy of sustainability, of which water conservation and management plays a critical role. The council has pioneered an approach to the better use of stormwater that demonstrates the potential of Local Government to make a significant contribution to public policy issues. The stormwater flowing through Salisbury is equivalent to 26 per cent of Adelaide’s take from the River Murray in an average year. Salisbury’s water recycling solutions set an example used to showcase best practice urban stormwater management to audiences worldwide.

Detention basins or temporary stormwater storage areas capture stormwater during rain events, providing essential flood mitigation objectives and opportunities to harvest stormwater. The stormwater is released for treatment through specially constructed wetlands which remove pollutants before it is pumped into, and later recovered from, aquifers in the area.
