Gillian Aldridge, OAM Mayor of Salisbury What a fabulous time of year to Discover Salisbury. We always have a range of exciting events and activities on throughout the year, but as we head into the spring months and the warmer weather, there are more opportunities to get outside and uncover the amazing qualities of our city. This year, the City of Salisbury is proud to be involved in the SALA Festival with a dedicated SALA Trail within our area. As part of South Australia’s largest and most innovative community based visual arts festival, we are pleased to support a range of different artists by exhibiting their work around our community centres and galleries. The Salisbury Writers’ Festival is back again this year with a range of writing topics from blogging, to plot creation, to creativity and getting published. There’s a range of creative and business topics to suit any of your writing desires. We are also pleased to welcome Vikki Wakefield to Salisbury as the keynote speaker for this year’s festival. She will detail her life as a writer in her talk Cracked Up To Be: The Truth About Writing, Publishing and Success. We also have a range of other family friendly events coming up including Salisbury Plays, the 2018 Aussie Era Car Show, the Salisbury Food and Cultural Festival and the 100 Years of Anzac Remembrance Day Service. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to get out and about in the community and celebrate these wonderful occasions. We would love for you to let us know about your events as well. If you have an event you would like included either in the next edition of Discover Salisbury or in the online event calendar, please head to discoversalisbury.com.au/yourevent

GOLD IN 2018 Salisbury residents aged 3 to 16 are encouraged to sign up for the popular annual Growing for Gold program and enjoy an array of free sports sessions. The program, which runs in the September/October school holidays, gives children a chance to participate in sport and recreational activities within the local community – entirely for free. The program emphasises: • Inclusiveness - all children are welcome to participate, regardless of cultural background, disability, or socio-economic background. • Opportunity - sessions are free for all participants. • Enjoyment and personal achievement.
• Long-term benefits - it is hoped that participants will find a club they want to join.
• A Gold Certificate if they join a participating club within a set period of time after the program’s completion, regardless of how many activities they tried. • The certificate will include a Sports Power voucher, to help get them started with apparel, shoes or equipment for their new sport.
The diverse range of activities on offer as part of the 2018 Growing for Gold program includes baseball, martial arts, archery, basketball, athletics and many others. All sessions are fully supervised by an adult representative of the sporting club involved.
