On behalf of the City of Salisbury I would like to acknowledge these events are being held on the traditional Country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pay respect to Elders past and present. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today. CELEBRATING THE LIVING LANGUAGE IN HISTORY, STORIES, MUSIC AND SONG
The day will begin with a Flag Raising Ceremony Henderson Square, followed by a talk on the history of the language and Frank Wanganeen will share his experience in learning his Native Kaurna Language and teach us some key words and phrases. There will be a BBQ lunch and Wadgedin Werra scrub meal, an interactive dreamtime story, cultural crafts, cultural and health information stalls and guest speakers. SCREENING OF THE INDIGENOUS OPERA ‘PECAN SUMMER’
There will be a screening of Australia’s first Indigenous opera ‘Pecan Summer’ written by Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham. It is based on the walk off from Cummeragunja Mission NSW in 1939. It moves through the years to the day of Kevin Rudd’s Apology at Federation Square in 2008. Robert Taylor, one of this Opera’s cast members, will provide an introduction to this Opera. ABORIGINAL SKIES
Aboriginal Australians have been looking at the night sky for thousands of years. During this time they have been able to build up a complex knowledge of the stars and their movements. Come and learn how to find the different constellations (stellar patterns) as seen by indigenous groups throughout Australia. Hear about the Dreaming stories that relate to the night sky, and learn about how constellations like the Southern Cross and Orion are seen by Aboriginal Australians. The evening is strictly designed for the adult beginner, with little or no astronomical knowledge who would like to know more about the night sky and the constellations, as seen by the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia. $30.00 per person. MABO DAY
The Mabo decision was named after Eddie Mabo, the man who challenged the Australian legal system and fought for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land. The landmark legal decision was made by the High Court on 3 June 1992.

NAIDOC WEEK (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The 2017 theme is ‘Our Languages Matter’ – which highlights the importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. For more information visit www.naidoc.org.au

The Tindale Aboriginal Genealogies Collection Held at the Len Beadell Library Norman Tindale was an anthropologist based at the South Australian Museum. He recorded vast amounts of genealogical information about Aboriginal communities from all over Australia, the majority being collected on field trips during the 1920s and 1930s. Over 50,000 Aboriginal people are included in the genealogies, as well as thousands of named photographic portraits. The genealogies are charted in hand-written field notes, usually with one extended family included on each chart. Some charts trace families back as far as 1860 and sometimes include the language groups and/or traditional names of people. Salisbury Library Service holds a portion of this collection related to Point McLeay Station, Point Pearce Station, Swan Reach Station, Koonibba Station, Port Augusta Station, Menindee Station. ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER NEWSPAPERS The Salisbury Library Service has these Newspapers at our branches. Koori Mail Newspaper Produced fortnightly, Koori Mail is distributed Australia-wide, providing news, views, advertisements and other material of vital interest
to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and Australians interested in Indigenous affairs. Koori Mail Newspaper has been doing this since 1991, and the newspaper has grown to the point where it is recognised as ‘The Voice of Indigenous Australia’. Loanable copies are held at the Len Beadell Library. And access through the Salisbury Library website or directly www.koorimail.com Aboriginal Way SA Aboriginal Way is a SANTS - South Australian Native Titles Services publication. It is a free Aboriginal newspaper which comes out quarterly. It is available at all the Library Branches. And you can access through the Salisbury Library website or directly www.nativetitlesa.org/ publications2/listing/aboriginal-way/ National Indigenous Times The National Indigenous Times first hit the streets on February 27, 2002. National Indigenious Times is staffed and owned by Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians and they are proud of the dedicated team of predominantly Indigenous Australian writers and columnists who contribute to the publication. This newspaper is available through a Link on the Salisbury Library website. All welcome to come into the library and use our PCs to access these newspapers.
