Program
On behalf of the City of Salisbury I would like to acknowledge these events are being held on the traditional Country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pay respect to Elders past and present. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today. THROUGH MY EYES EXHIBITION OPENING & TALK BY SCOTT RATHMAN Scott Rathman explores Reconciliation through workshops with school students, community and businesses on a regular basis. This exhibition is how own perspective on Reconciliation and what it means and how he sees it. It is work presented in a large scale similar to his mural work that he produces in schools and the community. Option to stay on for morning tea and plant out a ‘basket weavers patch’ at Marra Dreaming. Increase your awareness of the Kaurna culture through the window of language and challenge your brain at the same time! Taught by Kira Bain from the Tauondi Aboriginal College. Traditional culture and creation stories are depicted in dance and song. The dance troupe encourage audience participation to enhance the learning experience. Partnership between Twelve25 and Salisbury Youth Council. Activities run throughout the day including basket weaving, dot painting and more. Lunch provided. RSVP: Wednesday 11 July Bookings: 8406 8555 Friday 13 July • 7.30pm to 9.30pm Adelaide Planetarium - Univeristy of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus, Level 2 Building P, University Boulevard, Mawson Lakes ABORIGINAL SKIES Aboriginal Australians have been looking at the night sky for thousands of years. During this time they have been able to build up a complex knowledge of the stars and their movements. Come and learn how to find the different constellations (stellar patterns) as seen by indigenous groups throughout Australia. Hear about the Dreaming stories that relate to the night sky, and learn about how constellations like the Southern Cross and Orion are seen by Aboriginal Australians. The evening is strictly designed for the adult beginner, with little or no astronomical knowledge who would like to know more about the night sky and the constellations, as seen by the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia. Presenter: Paul Curnow - has been a lecturer at the Adelaide Planetarium since 1992 and is regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on Australian Aboriginal night sky knowledge. Friday 13 July • 6pm onwards Pooraka Farm Community Centre 126 Henderson Avenue, Pooraka SCREENING OF INDIGENOUS OPERA ‘PECAN SUMMER’ There will be a screening of Australia’s first Indigenous opera ‘Pecan Summer’ written by Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham. It is based on the walk off from Cummeragunja Mission NSW in 1939. It moves through the years to the day of Kevin Rudd’s Apology at Federation Square in 2008. Robert Taylor, one of this Opera’s cast members, will provide an introduction to this Opera. Classification PG – Occasional strong language; Forced removal of a child scene. 27 May to 3 June National Reconciliation Week Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. 3 June Mabo Day The Mabo decision was named after Eddie Mabo, the man who challenged the Australian legal system and fought for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land. The landmark legal decision was made by the High Court on 3 June 1992.
8 to 15 July NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
