Program

On behalf of the City of Salisbury I would like to acknowledge that these events are being held on the traditional Country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pay respect to Elders past and present. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today. Come and try this fun community workshop run by weaving artists from Marra Dreaming Indigenous Arts and Crafts. Tuesday 28 May • 12 noon to 3pm GP Courtyard, Mawson Lakes Campus University Boulevard, Mawson Lakes RECONCILIATION AT UNISA MAWSON LAKES UniSA Mawson Lakes campus will host a free event including a range of activities such as traditional games, a Didgeridoo performance and Dreamtime stories. There will also be Boomerang painting for a gold coin donation as well as a Potato Picnic campfire on site run by Elder Uncle Dookie. Cost: Boomerang painting for a gold coin donation No bookings required Enquiries: 8302 5092 Tuesday 28 May • 1pm to 3pm Pooraka Farm Community Centre 126 Henderson Avenue, Pooraka SCREENING OF INDIGENOUS OPERA ‘PECAN SUMMER’ An opera written and composed by Indigenous Australian singer Deborah Cheetham AO. Pecan Summer is based on the February 1939 Cummeragunja walk-off which Deborah’s grandparents were involved in. The directors, Pilger and Alan Lowery, explore the experiences of Aboriginal Australians in modern Australia. The title is derived from the Aboriginal homeland community of Utopia, Northern Territory, one of the poorest and most desolate areas in Australia. Refreshments provided. Increase your awareness of Kaurna culture through the window of language and learn more about the history of our area. The workshop teacher is Kira Bains from Tauondi Aboriginal College. PRESENTATION BY DAVID RATHMAN AM,PSM,FIML For 15+ years The England of 1700’s had overcrowded prisons with a lack of future sites to house the growing number of people who through their poverty, committed survival theft. On the other side of the world European explorers discovered a continent with many riches; Australia. Did the coming of European people disrupt or benefit the Aboriginal people? Morning tea provided. Wednesday 10 July • 10am to 11am Para Hills Library Wilkinson Road, Para Hills NAIDOC WEEK STORYTIME WALK AND TALK For 6+ years Join Kaurna Elder Uncle Frank Wanganeen as he presents a special storytime to celebrate NAIDOC week. Afterwards venture outside for a tour around Para Hills Community Hub to explore the natural environment and the amazing resources it has to offer. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Bookings: salisbury.sa.gov.au/recon Enquiries: 8406 8555 Thursday 11 July • 7.30pm to 9.30pm Adelaide Planetarium - University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus, Level 2 Building P, University Boulevard, Mawson Lakes ABORIGINAL SKIES Aboriginal Australians have been looking at the night sky for thousands of years. During this time they have been built up a complex knowledge of the stars and stellar movements. Come and learn how to find the different constellations (stellar patterns) as seen by Indigenous groups throughout Australia. Hear about the Dreaming stories that relate to the night sky, and learn how constellations like the Southern Cross and Orion are seen by Aboriginal Australians. The evening is strictly designed for the adult beginner, with little or no astronomical knowledge who would like to know more about the night sky, as seen by the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia. Presenter: Paul Curnow has been a lecturer at the Adelaide Planetarium since 1992 and is regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on Australian Aboriginal night sky knowledge. Thursday 18 July • 10am to 12 noon Paralowie Garden, Corner of Halba Crescent and Waterloo Corner Roads, Paralowie LOCAL NATIVE PLANTS - THEIR HISTORY AND USE Find out more about local native plants, their history and further uses. This session will be presented by Kaurna Elder, Uncle Frank Wanganeen with a guided walk in the Paralowie Garden. Morning tea provided. Cost: $3 per person RSVP: Friday 12 July - numbers limited Bookings: salisbury.sa.gov.au/recon Enquiries: 8406 8368 Friday 19 July • 10am Morella Community Centre 90 Kings Road, Parafield Gardens FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND & DARK SCIENCE MOVIE VIEWING & DISCUSSION WITH SCOTT RATHMAN For 15+ years Footprints in the Sand tells of the extraordinary search for Warri and Yatungka, believed to be the last of the Gibson Desert people who ‘came in’ out of the desert for the first time in the late 1970s. This is both a sad love story and an uplifting tale of survival and rescue. Dark Science is the tale of a young Swedish scientist who in 1910 led an expedition to Australia. The tale follows in his footsteps to the communities he robbed, and gives a contemporary Indigenous perspective to the return of the remains and artefacts. Morning tea provided. Important dates 26 May National Sorry Day This day is about coming together to share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

27 May to 3 June National Reconciliation Week Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. The theme for 2019 is ‘Grounded in truth - Walk together with courage’. For more information visit reconciliation.org.au/nrw.


3 June Mabo Day The Mabo decision was named after Eddie Mabo, the man who challenged the Australian legal system and fought for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land. The landmark legal decision was made by the High Court on 3 June 1992.

7 to 14 July NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The theme for 2019 is ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth.
