Mayors message
Welcome to the April to June edition of Salisbury Seniors. People often remark about the interesting range of events and activities that are available across the City of Salisbury for people of all ages. Salisbury Seniors is one to stay informed about these activities and much more.
On Monday 21 March we combined our Harmony Day celebration with a launch of the City of Salisbury as a Refugee Welcome Zone. This declaration is a very important public commitment of spirit to welcoming refugees to our community and promoting that inclusion is important for all.
In this edition read about how to register your expression of interest in the soon to be established Salisbury Seniors Alliance, participate in future Northern COTA SA Conversations with seniors and how to provide feedback about physical access issues within the City.
It was with great satisfaction that I signed the Refugee Welcome Zone declaration on behalf of the City of Salisbury at this event.
The word is now starting to get out about a recent extension to Council’s transport services for older people. See page nine for details about the new transport

HARMONY DAY CELEBRATION LAUNCHES REFUGEE WELCOME ZONE This year the City of Salisbury celebrated Harmony Day with the launch of the Refugee Welcome Zone at John Harvey Gallery on 21 March. Harmony Day recognises Australia’s cultural diversity. With this year’s theme ‘Our Diversity is our Strength’, the key message was ‘everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. “It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common,” said Vesna Haracic, Manager, Comunity Health and Wellbeing. “The City of Salisbury made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for
refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community by declaring the Local Government Area of Salisbury as a Refugee Welcome Zone." “This public commitment is also an acknowledgment of the tremendous contribution refugees and migrants have made to Salisbury’s community and it is a pledge to continue building a strong, socially cohesive community.” This special event commenced with a Welcome to Country by local Elder Frank Wanganeen followed by guest speakers Mabok Marial from the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission, Kirsten Bickendorf and Jai Bahtari from the Australian Refugee Association, and Qasem Bahmanzadah, Youth Ambassador with Mayor Gillian Aldridge officially signed the Refugee Welcome Zone on behalf of the City of Salisbury.
DID YOU KNOW? The City of Salisbury has a large culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) population which has enriched our city and shaped it to become a dynamic and multicultural community. Today, Salisbury is home to many people from different cultural backgrounds who are actively engaged and contributing to our city. Around 850 seniors from different CaLD communities are engaged in our social support activities organised by the City of Salisbury on a regular basis. Along with providing Commonwealth Home Support Programme services to the older people from CaLD backgrounds, our service model includes an introduction to other services which the Council provides such as cultural services through the libraries, language and literacy and computing services.

MY AGED CARE
accessing aged care services My Aged Care is a centralised point of contact (phone and website) for people to access: • Information on aged care services; • To register for services; and • For referral for assessment and services. My Aged Care consists of two national call centres and a website. You can contact My Aged Care to register for support if you have not received aged care services before, or are requesting a new service type, or have recently experienced a change in your health and/or capacity. If eligible for services the person is referred to a Regional Assessment Service for an in-home assessment.
If the service being requested is urgently required the referral request may be sent directly to a local service provider. The timeframe between contact with the My Aged Care contact centre and the Regional Assessment Service in-home assessment visit will vary depending on the individual situation. My Aged Care can be contacted on 1800 200 422 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm locally on Saturday (closed Sundays and National Public Holidays), or online at www.myagedcare.gov.au If you would like further information or some help with contacting My Aged Care please call Salisbury Home Assist on 8406 8225.

ASSISTANCE AT HOME & IN THE COMMUNITY Many Salisbury Home Assist customers describe their support workers as friendly, competent, helpful and reliable.
“I have a gardener support me with the front garden and now I have five beautiful roses growing!”
This program continues to have a positive impact on the lives of many older residents.
• Home maintenance and minor modifications (e.g. grab rails, ramps and hand-held showers)
This is how others have described the support they receive: “I have no hesitation in stating that I’m perfectly satisfied with the help that I’ve received. Thank you so much!” “Socially meeting other people on outings has made a huge difference, as has being able to visit other areas.” “Generally has made life so easy lots of times! For example having handrails put in has given me support in the toilet and shower.”
Home assist provides a range of support services including:
• Domestic assistance • Support with shopping and linking to social activities; and • Transport to medical appointments, shopping and social activities and social trips to popular places. For further information call the Salisbury Home Assist Office on 8406 8525 or email has@salisbury.sa.gov.au.

KYM 'S FOUND HIS SPARK Kym Watson says, “I have no regrets and neither will you!” Kym is one of the increasing number of men that are attending local centres and getting involved in activities such as wood burning, ukulele, fitness classes, dancing, chess, the men’s group and more. Kym knows that it’s not about age, but rather finding an activity that you love and doing it with others. He has been attending a wood burning group for two years and says, “I have benefited from the group’s wood burning
knowledge and expertise of this art form and I have learnt from others’ life experiences. I have opened myself up to what this friendly group can offer”. Kym has enjoyed the experience so much that he is now the wood burning group leader and volunteers his time fundraising, advising, and working with the men’s group. If you want to try something new, or like Kym fire up those skills you have, why not find out what’s on? Just visit a centre listed in this magazine, or call 8406 8525 for a program of activities.

LISTENING TO SALISBURY SENIORS The ‘Conversations with Northern Seniors’ initiative has provided an opportunity for older community members to have a voice in ‘matters that matter’ ensuring policy makers hear their views. Run by City of Salisbury and COTA SA (Council on the Ageing South Australia), the forums are proving a valuable source of information. COTA SA used the information gathered from the October 2015 forum on seniors’ housing and accommodation to inform their 2016 State Budget submission. Housing for seniors is now a key policy area for consideration by government. COTA SA’s full budget submission is available at www.cotasa.org.au or phone 8232 0422 for a copy.
‘Road Safety and Older Drivers’ was the community conversation in February 2016 and Salisbury seniors are now invited to join in the April conversation on ‘Creative Ageing’. The session will be held on Tuesday 12 April from 9.30am to 12.30pm in the John Harvey Gallery, 12 James Street, Salisbury. We’d love to have you join us in these important conversations. Flyers are available from council, seniors centres and community centres. For further information or a schedule of Community Conversations for 2016 please contact Sue Leckie on 8406 8566 or email sleckie@salisbury.sa.gov.au.
The December 2015 forum ‘Ageism – Alive and Thriving’ attracted some enthusiastic and wellinformed community members. Presentations from both older and younger perspectives set the scene for the community conversation that followed. Unfortunately ageism is alive and thriving with participants providing a myriad of examples from their personal experiences. Participants also identified a host of steps that individuals, City of Salisbury and COTA SA could take to promote more positive stereotypes of ageing and to encourage everyone to challenge discriminative behaviour as it happens.

IMPROVE ACCESS FOR ALL IN SALISBURY Have you ever walked around the block or tried to park your car and found something that makes it just that bit difficult? Council is keen to improve access for people in the community. It acknowledges that without safe access people risk hurting themselves or others or damaging property, or simply not enjoy the many benefits our city offers. So, if you have found a rough footpath, are tangled in overhanging branches, have struggled with obstacles, find difficulty getting up the curb or in the door, or have trouble in a Council building or park, they would love to hear from you.

AGE-FRIENDLY RETAIL PROJECT The Age-Friendly Retail Project will pilot a model to explore opportunities for marketing, businesses and customer service strategies that assist older people to access retail opportunities in a respectful, safe and meaningful way. It is a collaborative project with the City of Salisbury and the Officefor the Ageing (OFTA) and the Seniors Card Business Program. Research shows that age-friendly retail precincts contribute positively to the social experiences of older people. We know that people who are older are more likely to frequent places that are accessible and inclusive and utilise businesses that value and respect older people by becoming loyal customers. Seniors are the fastest growing consumer market in Australia.
The project will promote access for older people to services where they are valued and respected and raise community awareness regarding the economic benefits of older South Australians as consumers. The City of Salisbury will collaborate to grow opportunities for the Seniors Card Business Partners program and South Australian Age-Friendly Retail initiatives. The City of Salisbury would like to thank Parabanks and their traders, the Salisbury City Centre Business Association and participating community members for their cooperation and participation in the project. After all, the more who sign up for the Seniors Card Scheme the better the outcomes, and more opportunities become available to our whole community. For further enquires please do not hesitate to contact Julie Fyfe at City of Salisbury on 8406 8291 or email jfyfe@salisbury.sa.gov.au.

NEW DRIVING AND DEMENTIA RESOURCE Most older people drive safely and remain accident-free for many years. However, dementia may cause slow and sometimes subtle changes to driving skills. Deciding whether to continue driving or not can be very challenging for people with dementia and their families. Last week the Seniors Information Service launched a resource to assist people with dementia and their families to make decisions about safe driving. The booklet was developed in consultation with Wollongong University, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, and SGIC. The booklet is also designed to support GPs, nurses and other medical professionals to assist people with dementia to make decisions about their driving.
13 Salisbury SENIORS
It identifies how GPs can support a person who has decided to reduce or stop their driving, for example, it details some of the warning signs of dementia, unsafe driving, information on services and supports and alternatives to driving. The decision to stop driving can be stressful and overwhelming for older people, especially older people with dementia. It can result in a loss of freedom, identity and independence. The booklet aims to provide knowledge and support to everyone involved in making the decision. The booklet is available from Seniors Information Service, phone 8186 8776 for a copy or go to: www.seniors.asn.au/centric/home/dementia_ driving_project.jsp.
BRAIN GAMES FOR HEALTH, FUN AND FRIENDSHIP Challenging your brain can be a healthy, fun and social way to reduce your chance of developing dementia.
Come and join the fun at one of our Brain Gym groups:
A great way to do this is to join one of our Brain Gym groups to enjoy a variety of brain games in a fun and social environment. Here’s an example of one of the questions from Brain Gym for you to try:
Para Hills Centre: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month 10am to 11.45am
Jack Young Centre: First and third Wednesday of each month 10am to 12noon
Can you name 10 parts of the human body which are only 3 letters long? It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the answer. It’s the process of thinking differently and challenging your mind that’s important.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE FUTURE Ever wondered if you can use the skills you’ve learnt over your lifetime to really make a difference? Well you can. Many young people and organisations are looking for skilled volunteer mentors who can guide their future development. Learning from people who have ‘been there and done that’ gives others an insight into what to do or what not to do. A simple web search will detail individual mentoring programs. Most focus on supporting young people with their learning, such as Homework Club, Wheels in Motion and the Tertiary Mentoring Program, or support an individual’s personal development, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and Welcome to Australia.
Volunteering SA & NT Inc offer a Mentor Service connecting skilled individuals with not-for-profit organisations to assist in key areas such as strategic development, management, finance and marketing. Mentoring can also be done from the comfort of your own home. Visit www.micromentor.org a free easy-to-use social network that allows entrepreneurs and volunteer mentors to connect to solve problems and build businesses together. So what’s stopping you? Go online and search for a mentoring opportunity that’s right for you. In the next edition we’ll take a closer look at virtual volunteering. ELDER RELATIONSHIP SERVICE Relationships Australia has launched a confidential counselling and mediation service to support families who need help to deal with the complex issues related to ageing. Launched in January, the Elder Relationship Service will operate as a pilot for 12 months across six Australian cities including Adelaide and is staffed by trained counsellors and mediators with specific skills in elder services. Relationships Australia National Executive Officer Alison Brook said the service would
help families have difficult conversations and resolve differences in ways that improve relationships. “It’s a common story as we age that family conflict emerges around significant health issues, where older parents will live or how estates will be divided,” she said. “We also want to support families to plan for future medical, health, financial or living arrangements and make decisions that protect the interests, rights and safety of all family members.” Relationships Australia services are subsidised by the Federal Government and fees are based on family income. To find out more about the new service phone 8223 4566 or visit www.relationships.org.au.

' australia's healthy
weight
The Northern Health Network (NHN) in collaboration with local over 50s centres in the City of Salisbury conducted a series of healthy cooking demonstrations earlier this year. The demonstrations focused on healthy snacks and simple meal ideas and were held in support of Australia’s Healthy Weight Week, an initiative of the Dietitians’ Association of Australia, to encourage more home-cooking in support of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Dietitian Brittany Marsh demonstrated a variety of quick, easy meal and snack ideas, explaining how to choose healthy ingredients and decipher food labels. Following the demonstration, participants had the opportunity to sample the food and discuss healthy eating with the dietitian and other participants. All events were a great success, with participants reporting they received some easy and practical healthy eating tips they could take home with them. Feedback included… “Better to see a demonstration than just to read recipes” “I really enjoyed the demonstration and the food was delicious” “The dietitian was very informative, helpful and had VIP knowledge in regards to recipes and ideas with cooking that are achievable”. For more information visit www.northernhealth.com and search for February - Healthy Weight Week.
