The City of Salisbury supports residents to live positive, connected lives within the local community. Our programs offer the opportunity for social connection, improved wellbeing and ongoing learning in a friendly environment. CREATING AN AGE-FRIENDLY SALISBURY 'Salisbury is a great place to grow old where people are valued and have a strong sense of belonging'. Council’s commitment to making this vision a reality for the Salisbury community is outlined in the ‘Age-Friendly Salisbury Strategy 2015– 2020’. In the development of the Strategy we have examined the components or domains of life that contribute to an environment that supports older people including: • Open spaces and buildings • Transport • Housing • Social participation • Civic participation and employment • Respect and social inclusion • Communication and information • Community support and health services

Work around these domains has been undertaken over many years by the World Health Organisation and there are now more than 250 global cities that are working to build an age-friendly world. This is the framework we have chosen to develop the Age-Friendly Salisbury Strategy. Salisbury has applied to become a partner in the global network giving us the opportunity to share some of our homegrown successes and to learn from others’ experience. A summary of the Strategy is enclosed in this Salisbury Seniors magazine or you can get a copy of the full Strategy at www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/agefriendlystrategy or by contacting Julie on 8406 8291 or email AgeFriendly@salisbury.sa.gov.au

IMPROVE ACCESS FOR ALL Let’s make Salisbury a safe, accessible and enjoyable place for everyone. Council is keen to improve access for people in the community. So if you have found a rough footpath, are tangled in overhanging branches, have struggled with obstacles, find difficulty getting up the curb or in the door, or have troubles in a Council building or park, we would love to hear from you. To make a report contact Council by phoning 8406 8222, email city@salisbury.sa.gov.au, write to City of Salisbury, PO Box 8, Salisbury, or visit 12 James Street Salisbury.

TRANSPORT SERVICE NOW HAS MORE WHEELS TURNING City of Salisbury’s Home Assist has offered transport to eligible older people and younger people with a disability and their carers for many years.

These outings have been very popular and have provided many socially isolated people with an opportunity to get out and about and to meet people and make new friends. Home Assist staff have received positive feedback from many people, some who say this service has changed their life.

Home Assist offers transport for shopping, social outings, medical appointments and to access social groups that meet at centres such as Jack Young, Para Hills and Pine Lakes.

Transport services have expanded over the years and recently Council funded three more vans to expand the service further. Kathy Diener, who has been involved in the program since 2011, has now been joined by Marina Bovingdon and together these ladies work hard as a team to keep the wheels turning.

Transport for shopping is provided in two ways. Individual people can be picked up from their home by van and transported as a group, or picked up from their home by car and transported individually. Home Assist also offers four outings per week, taking small groups to interesting places in metropolitan and regional SA.

If you would like more information about transport, please ring Home Assist on 8406 8225.

"I love the bus social outings. It's just enjoyment, getting out and meeting different people. It enriches my life. I'm the happiest person and the luckiest person" - Joyce Green

SENIOR CENTRE HAPPENINGS WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June promotes that there’s ‘no excuse for abuse’ and lets older people know they have rights, including a right to be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect.

If you or someone you know has concerns about their own safety, contact the South Australian Elder Abuse Prevention Service on 1800 007 007. For additional information, you may like to read Knowing Your Rights - A Guide to the Rights of Older South Australians available from the Legal Services Commission. Contact them on 1300 366 424 or visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/safeguardrights for a copy.

This year the theme ‘paint the town purple’ was achieved in Salisbury through activities organised by Community Health and Wellbeing staff and community members. You may have noticed the City of Salisbury display outside the Len Beadell Library where resources, information and delicious purple cup-cakes were given away – a big thank you to the Jack Young Centre Crochet Group who made a range of beautiful purple items for the display.

Did you know that fitter older people have ‘younger’ and bigger brains? Keeping physically fit and active may result in the growth of three times as many brain cells in the brain’s memory centre – the hippocampus. It also improves memory recall (so you’ll know how to spell hippocampus later!). This area of the brain is associated with transferring short term memories into long term memories. Brain scans show that fitter older people have an increased blood flow to the brain – as well as increased oxygen levels and vital nutrients. Research suggests this may help prevent diseases such as Alzheimers and other types of dementia.

1. Join a local walking group – see page 21 and 22 for more details 2. Join our brain gym group – see page 20 for more details As it’s important to exercise your mind, here’s something for you to try right now… a) I have a head, I have a tail, but I miss a mouth and legs. What am I? b) What stays where it is when it goes off? c) I can be used to build castles, but I crumble in your hands. I can help a man see and am found all around the lands. What am I? Answers: a) coin/screw, b) alarm clock, c) sand

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY: HA NGUYEN Ha Nguyen, 97, attends the Vietnamese social support group at Pine Lakes Community Centre. "I’m very proud to be living in the City of Salisbury. I'm appreciative of the work Council does to support our group coming together as it allows us to have social interaction with each other and the wider community. We feel comfortable mingling in the Vietnamese language – I think this is especially important for people who did not learn English”. The Vietnamese social support program enables people from the same culture to meet, learn and have fun. Activities range from tai chi, bingo, cooking and more. Ha specifically likes the guest speaker program as she learns tips and hints to improve her wellbeing. She is also appreciative of the Housing Support Program, cleaning, transport and meal services as she wants to remain living at home for as long as possible. Ha has made many new friends and encourages people from Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds to participate in their local community. If you are an older person from a CaLD background and looking for social connection, contact Mary or Thuy on 8406 8525 to find out if there is a group for you. To see the Vietnamese group in action, visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/culturalprograms

COTA SA IS LISTENING TO SALISBURY SENIORS Conversations with Northern Seniors is a joint initiative of the City of Salisbury and the Council on the Ageing (COTA) SA. This has provided an opportunity for older community members to have a voice in 'matters that matter' to ensure policy makers hear their views. These bi-monthly forums have been engaging, inspiring and a voice for community members since commencing in October 2015. A variety of topics have been tackled to date including housing for seniors, ageism, road safety and older drivers and creative ageing. The most recent Conversation with Northern Seniors titled ‘Celebrate Ageing’ explored the view that ageism underpins all forms of discrimination and elder abuse. Professor Wendy Lacey spoke about the South Australian Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Older People and the importance of understanding that increasing age should not entail loss of rights, respect or autonomy.

The four key messages – stay connected, stay active, stay healthy and stay in control – were promoted as key to safeguarding against possible abuse and continuing to live positive lives as we age. City of Salisbury and COTA SA spoke about the work being done in the promotion of positive stereotypes of older people in the northern region and participants explored what they appreciated and celebrated in getting older. All older northern community members are invited to attend future sessions and to participate in discussions around topics that impact their lives. The future COTA SA Conversations with Northern Seniors will be held in the John Harvey Gallery at City of Salisbury and are scheduled for: • Tuesday 9 August, 1pm to 3.30pm • Tuesday 11 October, 9.30am to 12 noon • Wednesday 7 December, 9am to 3pm For information or to be on the mailing list for future sessions contact Sue Leckie at sleckie@salisbury.sa.gov.au or call 8406 8566.

CONNECTING THROUGH MY AGED CARE Do you need help accessing aged care information and services? Do you need support registering for My Aged Care? The friendly Home Assist team is there to help. Just give them a call on 8406 8225, weekdays from 8.30am to 5pm.

GIVE HAPPY LIVE HAPPY Give Happy Live Happy was the theme for National Volunteer Week held from 9 to 15 May. So, why are volunteers so happy? It seems volunteers sleep better, are less likely to develop high blood pressure and have better mental health than those that don’t volunteer. Volunteers report feelings of increased selfworth and wellbeing and a whopping 95% say that volunteering makes them happier. This could be due to what the researchers call a ‘helpers high’ – a powerful physical and emotional feeling experienced when directly helping others.

So if you would like to feel happier, have a greater sense of wellbeing and live longer, why not try volunteering? For more information contact: Michelle and Sue Volunteer Services volunteering@salisbury.sa.gov.au Phone: 8406 8276 Source: Volunteering Australia. Please note, some facts

It also seems the amount of time you volunteer may not be overly significant when it comes to feeling happy – just a few hours of volunteering makes a difference in happiness and mood, while sustained volunteering is associated with better mental health.

FIND YOUR FLOW Do you make enough time for personal interests or hobbies? Have you always thought you would like to try a new pursuit? Have a desire to find something that challenges you? It’s important to devote plenty of time to activities that make you feel happy and engaged, for example, writing or creating a piece of art, participating in recreation, spending time with friends or working on projects that interest you. When we are truly engaged in a situation, task or project, we experience a state of flow – we lose track of time because we are engrossed in what we are doing – and this feels really good.

Research has proven that the more we experience this type of engagement, the more likely we are to experience positive wellbeing. If you would like to find your flow, our centres for older adults provide a fantastic environment for people to make new friends and find activities that help them to be inspired and fulfilled. If you would like to find an activity that works for you, visit one of our centres for a tour or arrange a catch up with one of our staff who can assist you to ‘engage’…that is what we are here for. Phone the Jack Young Centre on 8406 8525 and ask for Jim or visit www.salisbury.sa.gov. au/livingwell for more information.

HOUSING SUPPORT PROGRAM Are you concerned about your housing situation or that of someone you know? Are you homeless, at risk of becoming homeless or know someone who is? Do you want to find secure, affordable and longterm accommodation? The City of Salisbury offers a Housing Support Program that provides information and support to people aged 50 years and over who may be experiencing housing difficulties. Our Housing Officer Thuy is based at the Jack Young Centre.

Alfred’s housing story can be viewed at www. salisbury.sa.gov.au\housing For further information or support with housing contact Thuy on 8406 8227 or phone the Jack Young Centre on 8406 8525.

Thuy has assisted many people with housing including Alfred who has generously shared his personal journey for others to learn from.

Jacks cafe

'

Everyone is welcome at Jack’s Café. Located in the Jack Young Centre, the Café is open Monday to Saturday for lunch, Thursday evening for schnitzel night and Saturday mornings for breakfast. Jack’s Cafe offers a wide range of freshly cooked meals such as soups, casseroles, roasts and tuna patties. Sandwiches and salads are also available, or choose from the weekly Chef Specials. Finish your meal with a dessert such as the popular sticky date pudding or fruit salad and ice-cream. Our menu is seasonal, please visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/jyc or pick up a copy the next time you are at the Centre. The meals are very affordable with the mains priced at around $5.50 and desserts $2.50. So don’t wait – come in soon. If you can, the staff and volunteers would appreciate a call on 8406 8525 before 11am to order your meals for lunch. While you’re there, say hello to Michelle, the Cafe Coordinator, and the great team of volunteers who cook the delicious meals. Come and experience Jack’s Café, meet some friends and socialise over a meal. Here’s one of Michelle’s tasty recipes to tempt you to do a bit of cooking now that winter is upon us.

MEATLOAF

SAUCE

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

500g lean sausage meat 500g lean mince meat 1 onion (diced) 250g breadcrumbs 1 tblspn curry powder 2 eggs 250ml milk 250ml water ¼ cup parsley flakes

250ml tomato sauce 2 tblspn vinegar 1 tblspn lemon juice ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup margarine

Method: Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix until all combined. Shape into a roasting dish or compact into a ramekin leaving enough room to add the sauce half way through the cooking process.

2 tblspn coffee (the secret ingredient) 125ml worcestershire sauce

Method:

Don’t forget to put the sauce on half way through. Always best served with mash or boiled potatoes and remember to include a couple of other vegies. I do hope you try it and enjoy. If you find it hard to cook then come try this meatloaf when it’s on the menu at Jack Young Centre and tell me what you think.

Put all ingredients into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Pour over the meatloaf about half way through the cooking process and serve with the meatloaf when cooked. Cook your meatloaf in the oven at 180°C – 340°F for about one hour.
