Mayors message

Welcome to the October to December edition of the Salisbury Seniors magazine developed by the Community Health and Wellbeing Division. This is the fourth and final edition for 2016.

You may think that things will start to slow down at this stage of the year, but this is not the case. I invite you to check the activities on page 15 which have been planned as part of October’s Aged to Perfection Seniors Month. Activities include the exhibition 'Garden Pride - Home Grown and Great' which recognises and celebrates locals who love to grow and share their backyard produce and gardening wisdom. Other events include a Para Hills Centre Musical Melodies Afternoon and a Jack Young Centre Fashion Parade Luncheon.

October 15 to 28 is when the COTA SA Every Generation Festival gets into full swing. Information about this festival is outlined on page 15.

Finally, as this is the last edition for 2016, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy festive season.

Many of you will be familiar with the dynamic, bi-monthly 'Conversations with Northern Seniors' series that has been running this year. These conversations are a collaboration between the City of Salisbury and COTA SA. See page 16 for details about the October and December conversations.

If you would like to receive an electronic copy of future Salisbury Seniors magazines, please email has@salisbury. sa.gov.au or phone 8406 8225.

On page 14 you will find useful tips about how to reduce the impact of extreme heat through summer.

CONGRATULATIONS Salisbury Leaders

WHO Age-Friendly City

The City of Salisbury acknowledges its staff and volunteers through a peer recognition program – you may have seen past recipients as their faces appear in the Municipal Council and Operations Centre reception areas.

The City of Salisbury is now a partner in the global network with recognition by the World Health Organisation as an Age-Friendly City. This network will assist us to continue our work to make Salisbury a great place to grow old and where people are valued and have a strong sense of belonging.

This year the Community Health and Wellbeing Division had nominations for Karen Macnab (individual category) and team nominations for • Para Hills Centre volunteers • Jack Young Centre volunteers • The Commonwealth Home Support Programme Team • The Footpath Request Evaluation Team - represented by our own Mike Taggart, Inclusion Project Officer. We are delighted to congratulate Karen Macnab, Para Hills Centre Coordinator, who received the award for the Empowerment category, and the Jack Young Centre volunteers for receiving the award for the Access, Equity and Inclusion category (pictured on front page). All award recipients and nominees are to be recognised for their commitment to providing quality service to the community.

To find out more visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/agefriendlystrategy or phone Julie on 8406 8291.

Golden Shoe Winners The National Heart Foundation recently held it's Golden Shoe Awards recognising the people who volunteer their time to coordinate this healthy activity in local communities. Ambika and Indira Dulal were up against some fine competition with more than 1,300 groups around Australia nominated. They were surprised to be awarded the Walk Organisers Golden Shoe Award for South Australia. Known as the 'Dulal’s', they were nominated for their passion and support. "They continue to grow and promote the Bhutanese Healthy Walking Group amongst their community. They celebrate their walking with colour and singing and their vibrancy has been acknowledged," said Jim Binder, Heart Foundation Walking Group Local Coordinator. If you would like to get outside and be active, why not consider joining a walking group? To find out more have a look at the Wellbeing Activities listed on pages 20 to 25 of this magazine or visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/wellness or contact Jim on 8406 8251.

ASSISTANCE WITH CARE AND HOUSING “I have hearing difficulty and hand trembles yet Thuy saw beyond my disabilities and treated me with great respect.” Edward said. “She attended the Housing Needs appointment at the Salisbury Housing SA office with me and helped me reach a Category 1 status.” Within four weeks Edward was offered a unit. He thanked Thuy for her support stating, “Thuy visited me in my new nest recently and I told her that I am the happiest 86 year old man in Elizabeth Vale”.

In just three months Edward had secured alternative accommodation, moved in and quickly settled in his perfect little unit all thanks to the City of Salisbury Housing Support Program. “I still cannot believe how quickly things moved,” explained Edward, “I met Thuy Nguyen, the Housing Support Officer from Salisbury towards the end of March 2016 and explained my housing situation”. Edward explained to Thuy that despite living in the same accommodation for the past 10 years, there were constant management changes, the quality of service had declined and it was now unaffordable.

flourishing in SALISBURY The Community Health and Wellbeing Division would like to welcome Kishore and Kamela Shudda to our local community.

We are proud to welcome both to Salisbury and glad to hear that they feel connected to our wonderful local community.

The Indian couple has lived in many countries around the world and are now living in Salisbury. Having arrived six months ago, the pair initially felt isolated. Fortunately they approached Council and were supported to join the Bhutanese Senior Social Support Program. Being involved in this program has significantly changed their lives. Kishore is enjoying hosting a laughing group and Shudda is busy learning crochet and knitting. They have made many friends and regularly attend birthdays and weddings. Both are learning English and are busy walking the local area delivering catalogues in the mornings. As a result of their new activities, Kishore’s health has improved and Shudda is excited to get out in Salisbury as in India she would never leave her home.

HOW TO OVERCOME YOUR FEARS AND TRY SOMETHING NEW What is your favourite thing to do Step 1: Start with something small that brings you alive and makes Step 2: Choose something that you you feel good? are interested in Do you remember the first time you tried it and how it felt awkward and unfamiliar?

Keep doing the ‘small things’ to build up your confidence so that over time you will be ready to tackle new ‘bigger’ things - and remember mistakes are okay as they help you learn.

Then how much time and effort you put in to improve?

Just imagine how great you will feel when you have tried something new and you discover a love for it.

Doing something unfamiliar or uncomfortable can be scary, but if you think about it, most of the things we fear don't actually come to pass… and can lead to feeling really great and happy with yourself.

To find a new activity, you can read about them in this magazine, visit one of our centres or call 8406 8525 for a program. Then decide which one (or two) you are going to try.

So what should you do when faced with trying something new?

Just remind yourself that some of the best things in life come from stepping outside your comfort zone and trying new activities, learning new skills and having different experiences. And remember, even a maestro was a beginner at some stage and may have had some self-doubt to begin with.

CHRISTMAS OPENING HOURS Jack Young Centre JYC groups will finish on Friday 16 December and resume on Monday 9 January 2017. The centre will be closed from Friday 23 December and re-open on Wednesday 4 January 2017. Para Hills Centre groups and CaLD social support groups will receive 2016 program finishing and 2017 commencing details directly from individual coordinators. We wish you a very happy festive season and look forward to seeing you all again in 2017.

your feedback is gold! A big thank you to everyone who returned the Home and Community Services survey over the past couple of months. Mailed out with the Salisbury Seniors Magazine in late June, the survey was designed to collect information to inform future service planning.

Two interesting snippets summarised from your responses:

The survey asked questions about:

• People identified that they preferred to receive information via post and through Salisbury senior and community centres.

• Current support/services accessed by older people • Services people anticipate requiring in the future • Likelihood of people referring our services to a friend; and • Preferred communication avenues for people. A total of 491 surveys were returned, which was an excellent result.

• 94% of respondents indicated that they would recommend Salisbury services (for older people) to a friend; and

We are currently undertaking a detailed analysis of the survey responses and will provide further information in the January to March edition of Salisbury Seniors. Thank you to everyone who responded to this survey. Mystery prizes were given away, which were vouchers for coffee and a main meal for the winner and a friend at Jack’s Café at the Jack Young Centre.

PINE LAKES: ITALIAN PROGRAM The Italian Senior Social Support Program is run every week on Mondays at Pine Lakes Centre and two Fridays a month at the Jack Young Centre.

The program supports people from the same culture to meet, connect, share stories, learn and have fun. It offers a range of activities including bingo and cards, hand massages (with nail polish for the ladies), storytelling, health education sessions, guest speakers and more. The Pine Lakes Italian Social Chatting Group (quattro chiacchere) is passionate about sharing special cultural food and swapping healthy recipes to cook at home. The Italian community is well known for its hospitality and love of food. The program is open to people from other cultural backgrounds who would love to meet new Italian friends. The group currently has people from Bhutan, Russia and China and language is never an issue! Seems food and friendship is a great way to bring people together.

process for accessing aged care services My Aged Care is the centralised point of contact: • For information on aged care services • To register for services (eligibility criteria applies); and • For referral for assessment and services. Anyone who has not accessed an aged care service before; or is requesting a new service type; or who has recently experienced a significant change (health and capacity) is required to contact My Aged Care for an initial ‘screening’ conversation and registration. If eligible for services the person is then referred to a Regional Assessment Service (RAS) for an in-home assessment. The timeframe between contact with the My Aged Care contact centre and the Regional Assessment Service in-home assessment visit may vary from a couple of days to a number of weeks. My Aged Care can be contacted on 1800 200 422 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday (closed Sundays and National Public Holidays). A REASSURING CALL Fancy a morning drive into the city to make a few phone calls? While some of us are sleeping, hundreds of dedicated volunteers are getting up early and making their way into Pirie Street to start phoning older and isolated South Aussies. The Red Cross Telephone Support Service engages around 400 volunteers to check on the safety and wellbeing of people registered with their service. Making calls every day of the week, family members or friends can be reassured that their loved one has received a call from a friendly and concerned stranger committed to supporting others. Jack, a client of the service, describes the volunteers as 'caring and loving'. 'They give of themselves, which is a wonderful thing.' But ask any volunteer and they will say they enjoy the relationships they have with the clients and volunteering helps them to remain connected with a sense of purpose.

what you need to know to cope with extreme heat Everyone can be affected by extreme heat, particularly older people and people with chronic illness. To learn how you can prepare for and reduce the impact of extreme heat read the tips below. For more detailed information, visit www.health.sa.gov.au or pick up an ‘Extreme Heat Advice for Older People’ information sheet from one of our senior centres. Stay hydrated You should drink two to three litres of water a day even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid 'fizzy', alcoholic and caffeinated drinks - and beware some teas and coffee contain caffeine. Also do not take salt tablets unless advised by your doctor. Dress for summer Wear lightweight, light coloured clothing as it reflects heat and sunlight and helps your body maintain a normal temperature. Check on those at risk Visit ‘at risk’ individuals such as the sick and elderly at least twice a day and keep an eye on children. Watch for signs of heat-related illness, details available at: www.health.sa.gov.au. Minimise sun exposure Keep out of the sun as much as possible. If you must be in the sun, wear a shirt, hat and sunglasses. Also make sure you wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn, but be aware that it limits the body's ability to cope with heat. Prepare your home Prepare your home early. Service or replace your air conditioner before you need it. Curtains, awnings and blinds can also help to keep the home cool so make sure they are in good condition and on hot days keep them closed. Make use of air conditioning If you don't have air conditioning, make use of public facilities such as shopping centres, art galleries, cinemas or other air conditioned buildings. Portable fans are also useful in circulating cool air or exhausting warm air from a room. Try wetting a flannel or using a spray bottle with water to keep yourself cool in front of the fan. Remember your pets Pets can be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Make sure they have shade and plenty of cool water to last the day. You may also like to freeze a bottle with water and leave it outside for your pet to play with or rest on during the day. Seek medical advice if necessary For medical advice contact your local GP or telephone HealthDirect Australia on 1800 022 222. For immediate medical assistance phone 000.

A WORD FROM Jack'S cafe

'

New faces appeared at Jack’s Café recently with winners of our survey mystery prize presenting their vouchers entitling them and a friend to coffee and a main meal. We hope that they and other new patrons enjoyed our delicious and nutritious food and are eager to return to try our new Spring/Summer menu with a range of specials and fresh salads. The kitchen staff and volunteers have been very busy planning the meals for the Christmas in July event and upcoming monthly events (featured in this edition) and recently offered a delicious high-tea to 45 people who attended the 'Walk Back in Time: A history tour of Salisbury' event. As a reminder we are open Monday to Saturday for lunch, Saturdays for breakfast and Thursdays are our Schnitzel night. Eligible members get a subsidised meal for $5.50 and visitors pay $7 for a main meal. If you would like more information on meals, times or cost visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/jyc alternatively call 8406 8525 or visit us at the Jack Young Centre, 1 Orange Ave, Salisbury. We hope to see you and your family soon at Jack’s Café. And now for a delicious recipe from Michelle, Jack’s Café very own chef….
