What better time to Discover Salisbury than as we emerge from a chilly winter to the promise of warmer months with sunny skies? Fortunately, there is a diverse range of things to see and do while celebrating springtime in our fabulous city. The Salisbury Writers’ Festival is back again this year with an enticing range of workshops to help you embrace your story, from podcasting to memoir-writing. It will also include engaging family activities such as a session with children’s author and illustrator Mandy Foot and a Dreamtime reading. Hundreds of eager, young participants are expected to take part in the 2019 Growing for Gold program, which is celebrating its 20th year in action. This milestone is a credit to the program’s enjoyable and novel approach, where children are encouraged to have a go at a range of different sports and recreational activities to determine which they might be interested in pursuing further. Also upcoming, creative minds are invited to take advantage of the city’s SALA Trail, while sporting fanatics can pencil in the second annual Bowls SA Super League. Other events include the St Kilda Salisbury Plays, the 2019 Aussie Era Car Show, the Salisbury Food and Cultural Festival and the Bagster Road Community Centre’s 40 year celebration. You might surprise yourself by delving into the experiences on offer in the City of Salisbury’s backyard. Of course, we would love to spread the word about your events too. If you have an event that you would like included in the next edition of Discover Salisbury or in the online event calendar, please head to discoversalisbury.com.au/events/ community/add.

What’s your story? Embrace it at Salisbury Writers’ Festival 2019 Salisbury

Celebrating 15 years of the Salisbury Writers’ Festival!

Writers’ Festival 23 to 25 August 2019

Every single person has their own unique story to tell and the 2019 Salisbury Writers’ Festival can help to embrace yours. The popular festival, a collaborative project between City of Salisbury and Writers SA, will this year embody the universal theme ‘Embrace Your Story’. Writers SA Director Jessica Alice said the festival will feature something for everyone over its three day program which kicks off with the official Opening & Awards Evening at John Harvey Gallery on Friday August 23. “Whether you want to record the stories of your own life, promote your creative work online or reach the next generation of readers, Salisbury Writers’ Festival has something for you,” Ms Alice said. “Join authors, podcasters, memoirists and all creative types to discover how they achieved success, where they find inspiration and, most importantly, how you can reach others with your words.”

What to expect After last year’s success, the festival will once again include events for storytellers of all persuasions and experience levels, and will include content on both the business and craft of writing. Sessions focus on memoir writing, traditional and self-publishing, creating podcasts, building a noteworthy author brand, and how to be featured in your local newspaper, as well as opening and closing keynote events covering the big social and political issues for storytellers. An intensive writing workshop will help you push through procrastination and writers’ block to get your book idea or manuscript closer to publication. There will also be a range of activities for all ages, including a Kaurna Language workshop, Sensory Story Time, the Australian Poetry Slam SA heat, and a drawing workshop with children’s author and illustrator Mandy Foot, who will show you that inside every person is a sketchable character who wants to break free. 2019 Salisbury Writers’ Festival 23 to 25 August 2019

Podcasts tell an aural story When we talk about new platforms for communication, the podcast is booming. Currently, there are more than 700,000 podcasts for the listener to choose from with countless more popping up every day. In a first for the Salisbury Writers’ Festival, two of South Australia’s most dynamic podcast creators – Dr Lauren Butterworth and Dominic Eliseo – will help you learn about why this medium is so popular during a conversation event, Podcasts tell a story too.

From what subjects work in audio format and how to produce your own podcast, this session will answer all of your questions: providing insights into audiences, crafting scripts, equipment and technology.

Dr Lauren Butterworth

Dr Lauren Butterworth is joint-founder of Deviant Women, a fortnightly podcast series exploring women from history, fiction or present day who haven’t been afraid to break the rules, subvert the system and challenge the status quo.

Sharing my ancestors’ story At age 19, local Kaurna man Jack Buckskin took the inspiring step of delving into his story – by learning the endangered language of his ancestors. In the years since, it has become Jack’s mission to teach the endangered language of the Adelaide Plains to as many people as possible. In addition to presenting the Salisbury Writers’ Festival’s official Welcome to Country and an introduction to storytelling at its opening night, Jack will also be sharing special insight into the Kaurna language with a workshop on Saturday – followed by a free storytime in language event for families.

Embracing your experience

for a revealing exploration of writing from real life at the Salisbury Writer’s Festival’s Memoir Writing Workshop.

How do you write about the personal with enough distance to ensure the craft is good, and the story compelling?

In Jo’s memoir Boomer and Me, she explores the pressures of juggling work, motherhood and a joint custody agreement while trying to work out why her son Leo – also known as Boomer – is struggling to fit in.

And how do you know what is too much or just the right amount of personal revelation? Join renowned Adelaide-based memoirist Jo Case

When Leo is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Jo fears what it means – and sees herself, and her family, through new eyes. discoversalisbury.com.au

Explore our backyard with Salisbury Plays at St Kilda

Whether it was making mudpies or backyard cricket, many of us can recall long days playing outdoors as children. But these blissful recollections are in stark contrast with the overall experience of many of our children today – who are more likely to be indoors with an iPad than climbing gumtrees and inventing outdoor games. In partnership with Nature Play SA, Salisbury Plays is aiming to bring back the balance with our natural environment to families’ busy lives by offering a free community event. Salisbury Plays will return to St Kilda Adventure Playground this year, on Sunday October 13 from 11am until 3pm. This exciting event is filled with a range of nature play activities for children and families of all ages, from bush craft and kite making to walks exploring the biodiversity of the natural environment.

City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge, OAM, said Salisbury Plays was one of Council’s most popular series of events and the involvement of Nature Play SA only strengthened it. “I love how the community comes together to participate in the beloved Salisbury Plays and the partnership with Nature Plays SA helps to promote the joy of exploring our own backyard,” Mayor Aldridge said. “The Salisbury Plays St Kilda Event will give children a chance to immerse themselves in nature, engaging all of their senses to better regulate emotions, socialise, build selfconfidence and resilience.” As well as enjoying St Kilda’s well-loved nature playground, families can take part in a range of free activities on the day including: • Bush craft • Junk play utilising the natural resources around St Kilda

• Tinkering and potion making • Kite flying and kite craft • Bell tents • Nature craft • Face painting • Parkour sport activities Those wanting a relaxed approach might opt to walk along the St Kilda Mangrove Boardwalk, ride on the historic trams or enjoy a picnic while watching the giant kites. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Register your interest to join us on the day. discoversalisbury.com.au/ salisburyplays
