I am so happy to bring you the latest edition of Discover Salisbury which is packed with opportunities to get out and about in Salisbury. Young families will enjoy our Salisbury Plays program with two upcoming events. On Sunday 26 April, the fun will take place at a brand new location for Salisbury Plays, Carisbrooke Park, with giant games, face-painting, Nature Play SA’s mobile junk yard, mini golf, a petting zoo and more. But if you can’t make it, there’s always the Sunday 17 May Salisbury Plays event at Ingle Farm Recreation Centre with indoor and outdoor activity options from fitness aerobics and yoga to skating and football inflatables. Following on from last year’s success, a Mother’s Day event will be held on Sunday 10 May at Salisbury Memorial Park featuring the soothing sounds of acoustic musicians to pay tribute to all mothers and grandmothers. A traditional ANZAC Day ceremony will also be held on Saturday 25 April at the Salisbury RSL Sub Branch. Other interesting events taking place in our area this season include Superhero Saturday – a family day with the opportunity to dress up as your favourite superhero – and the annual May The Fourth Be With You family fun day. These great events are provided by the Salisbury Business Association in partnership local businesses and supported by the City of Salisbury. Please take a look through this edition of Discover Salisbury for details of all the many activities happening across autumn in our own backyard.

Salisbury Plays together
With technology an increasingly prominent fixture in the busy lives of many modern young families, many of us find we are spending less time outside. However physical play and time spent in fresh air remains one of the most important things we can do to boost wellbeing for both our children and ourselves. According to the Australian Government’s national physical activity guidelines, children need at least an hour of physical activity per day. Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM said Salisbury Plays was about making the most of the city’s existing fabulous parks and reserves spaces. “Salisbury Plays is a wonderful initiative that offers families an opportunity to spend the day outside enjoying Salisbury’s attractive green spaces,” said Mayor Aldridge. “I have loved seeing families interacting and children exploring the activities available at our past Salisbury Plays days, and am sure the upcoming events will prove to be a fabulous time for all who attend.” Check out the details below for two upcoming Salisbury Plays events – we hope to see you there with the kids or the grandkids!

Celebrating Aboriginal culture together across Salisbury
Kaurna Elder Frank Wanganeen presents the Welcome to Country at a Reconciliation in the North Morning Tea.
City of Salisbury will once again celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in 2020 with a range of events and activities planned to mark National Reconciliation Week (NRW) and NAIDOC Week. The City of Salisbury Reconciliation and NAIDOC program will officially be launched by Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM at Reconciliation in the North Morning Tea to be held on Thursday 21 May in conjunction with Tea Tree Gully Council at Salisbury Community Hub. Events featured within the program will be held from just prior to NRW, and will continue through until after NAIDOC Week, which will take place 5 to 12 July. More details about the Reconciliation in the North Morning Tea will be available online in the coming weeks via: www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/Recon
What does NAIDOC Week mean? NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Always Was, Always Will Be.

NRW (27 May to 3 June) is about strengthening the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples. Celebrations this year underpin the 2020 theme of In This Together. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
