Newsletter Issue No. 1

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: MARK ADDIEGO Welcome to the inaugural issue of “Where Biotech Lives,” our periodic update to the biotechnology community in South San Francisco. I’d like to take a moment to share with you an upcoming event the City of South San Francisco is sponsoring, in coordination with our school district and the biotech industry.

The Biotech Summit, an event led by South San Francisco Vice Mayor Pradeep Gupta, is a conference where biotech industry leaders exchange ideas with local educators regarding how to excite students about a career in biotechnology. Investing in our student’s development from an early age is something about which our entire City Council is passionate. We all agree that investing in our students is really an investment in our future, and more specifically an investment in the future of the biotechnology industry in South San Francisco. I encourage you to attend the upcoming Biotech Summit. You will hear from industry leaders such as Genentech and California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) about the efforts that are already underway to expand the life sciences workforce and how you can be a part of that effort. It will be time well spent. I look forward to seeing you and your colleagues at the Summit. We value our biotechnology businesses and are ready to partner with them to find success in South San Francisco. Thank you for being a part of the South San Francisco community.

EXPLORE WHAT’S NEW IN DOWNTOWN SSF

If you haven’t had a chance to get to downtown, what are you waiting for? In the last year, nearly a dozen new restaurants have opened up. Below is an introduction to the newest members of our community.

47 Hills Brewery: John Tucci, 47 Hills’ president and founder, always

had a dream of opening his own brewery. Having been in the brewing industry since 1992 – when he first studied brewing and malting science in Bavaria – it seemed like a natural next step in his career. Set to open this spring is the new 47 Hills Brewery, which is now under construction at 137 S. Linden. 47 Hills Brewery will feature a taproom, grill, and industrial brewery. The secret recipes for their beer will focus on German, English, Belgian and some American styles. 47hillsbrewingcompany.com.

Amis Creperie & Cafe: If you’ve ventured up Grand recently, you

may have noticed one particular building that’s generating a lot of buzz. Amis Creperie & Cafe, located at 415 Grand, is one of many new businesses in this building and one you ought not to miss - case in point, its “Not-Nutella” Crepe. Using only local and fresh ingredients, not only do they serve the best Crepe in town, they’ve now added ice cream to their menu making that sweet tooth just a little bit sweeter. cafeamis.com.

Amoura: Local residents have fallen in love with this restaurant and ever

so fitting is its name, Amoura, which stands for “love” in many languages. To top it off, Amoura received the envied designation in the MICHELIN Guide San Francisco 2016: Bay Area & Wine Country. Located at 713 Linden, when you dine there, you’ll find Mediterranean fare with a modern twist: “tender, smoky grilled lamb skewers are draped over tabbouleh with butternut squash and arugula, while a perfectly cooked roast chicken is drizzled with garlicky basil pesto,” notes the MICHELIN Recommendation. If that’s not enough to make your mouth water, then be sure to check out their notable drink menu! amourasf.com.

Antigua: Right up the street at 437 Grand is Antigua, a bustling little coffee

shop that packs a big punch of flavor. Need a little pick-me-up? This coffee shop (we might add, also serves beer and wine and has fantastic paninis, bagels with lox, breakfast burritos, etc.) is passionate about sourcing and blending only the finest coffee beans and roasting them to perfection. If you’re looking to get out of the office for a meeting or a break, this is a great place to catch the downtown action. antigua-cafe.com.

Armstrong Brewery: Also open for business at 415 Grand, Armstrong Brewery features a slate of locally brewed beers in a distinctive location. In the brewery, you will not find a centrifuge, filter or other equipment used to speed up the process. Brewing just two batches (62 gallons), they are able to craft many varieties of flavorful beers using English and German malts. armstrongbrewing.com.

EXPLORE WHAT’S NEW IN DOWNTOWN SSF

While we feature new restaurants that have come to the downtown, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention our long-standing and crowd favorites, among them: Ben Tre, Bertolucci’s, Ristorante Buon Gusto, Di Napoli Pizzeria & Ristorante, Izanami, La Tapatia, and Thai Satay. This is just the beginning. Got a sweet tooth? Galli’s Bakery on Grand is a South San Francisco tradition.

Cafe 382: If you’re craving some comfort food, Cafe 382 will soon be your

go-to place. Scheduled to open the second week of March, this cafe located at 382 Grand, will cater to those people that want great food, but don’t have the time to have a sit-down meal. Don’t be mistaken, however, we are not talking the typical fast food restaurant - their burgers will be freshly ground every day, and their pancake/waffle batters will be made from scratch. They also will use locally sourced and organic products as much as possible, including hormone/ antibiotic-free beef and poultry, and fresh sustainable seafood. cafe382.com.

Copper Chimney: 415 Grand is the place to be! Copper Chimney, with its roots stemming from northern India, takes its patrons on a celebration of food, culture and tradition. They’ve mastered the robust flavors of India and the rustic fare of the fabled roadside “dhabas” of Punjab. Punjabi cuisine is known for its rich, buttery flavors along with the extensive vegetarian and meat dishes. Taking one look at their menu, however, may cause confusion! This restaurant offers bento boxes and burritos...but don’t be fooled by the title. Check them out and while you’re at it, be sure to check out their tea lounge. copperchimneyssf.com.

Flavas Jamaican Grill: Another South San Francisco favorite also

received the coveted MICHELIN Recommendation in this year’s MICHELIN Guide San Francisco 2016: Bay Area & Wine Country. Located at 314 Linden, “Flavas Jamaican Grill’s authentic dishes brim with herbs, garlic, and Scotch Bonnet peppers, like the smoky, boldly spiced jerk chicken with caramelized fried plantains; or the fork-tender curried goat stew with coconut milk and chilies,” notes the MICHELIN Recommendation. flavasjamaicangrill.com.

Hometown Heroes: If you like tacos, then Taco Tuesday may be your next outing at Hometown Heroes, centrally located at 303 Grand. This sports bar has ample televisions and a lively post-word crowd. If tacos aren’t your thing, perhaps some truffle shuffle tries, kimchi spam fried rice, Brussels sprouts with chorizo, or a waffle churro a la mode strikes your fancy. Whatever your craving, chances are, it can be fulfilled here. You can find them on Facebook and Instagram.

San Francisco Wine School: Last fall brought the grand opening

of this wine school, which offers education programs from a central location in downtown South San Francisco, 415 Grand Avenue, to novices and connoisseurs alike who want to get a better understanding of wine. Founded by Master Sommelier and Certified Wine Educator David Glancy, San Francisco Wine School is the largest wine school in the United States. Learn more about them at sanfranciscowineschool.com.
