A Farm Boy Remembers Tuesday, January 16, 3:00 PM Larry Scheckel takes us back to his boyhood days, in the 1940s and 1950s in the hill country of southwestern Wisconsin. He grew up with eight siblings on the Crawford County 238 acre farm 2 miles from Seneca, Wisconsin. With both humor and grace, he shares his memories of seasonal farm life and the oneroom country school out on Oak Grove Ridge. The social heart of the community, the school hosted the basket social, the Christmas program and the end-of-theyear school picnic. Join Scheckel on his nostalgic and evocative journey back to a simpler time when life revolved around family, farm, Church, and seasons. Larry and his wife, Ann, will use a PowerPoint program as a catalyst to a discussion of rural life in the middle 1900s. S TOUGHTON A REA S ENIOR C ENTER • 248 W. Main St., Stoughton WI 53589

News: Case Management Information CMS Reveals New Medicare Card Design Removing Social Security numbers strengthens fraud protections for about 58 million Americans Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) gave the public its first look at the newly designed Medicare card. The new Medicare card contains a unique, randomly-assigned number that replaces the current Social Security-based number. CMS will begin mailing the new cards to people with Medicare benefits in April 2018 to meet the statutory deadline for replacing all existing Medicare cards by April 2019. In addition to today’s announcement, people with Medicare will also be able to see the design of the new Medicare card in the 2018 Medicare & You Handbook. The handbooks are being mailed and will arrive throughout September.
“The goal of the initiative to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards is to help prevent fraud, combat identify theft, and safeguard taxpayer dollars,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “We’re very excited to share the new design.” CMS has assigned all people with Medicare benefits a new, unique Medicare number, which contains a combination of numbers and uppercase letters. People with Medicare will receive a new Medicare card in the mail, and will be instructed to safely and securely destroy their current Medicare card and keep their new Medicare number confidential. Issuance of the new number will not change benefits that people with Medicare receive. Healthcare providers and people with Medicare will be able to use secure look-up tools that will allow quick access to the new Medicare numbers when needed. There will also be a 21-month transition period where doctors, healthcare providers, and suppliers will be able to use either their current SSNbased Medicare Number or their new, unique Medicare number, to ease the transition. This initiative takes important steps towards protecting the identities of people with Medicare. CMS is also working with healthcare providers to answer their questions and ensure that they have the information they need to make a successful transition to the new Medicare number. For more information, please visit: www.cms.gov/newcard

News: Case Management Information Choosing Keepsakes
Four F our R Reasons easons tto o Make Make a Memory mory B Box ox ffor or y your our lloved oved one o who w ho has has d dementia. ementia. Adapted from Alzheimers.net nett ne
For loved ones, parents or seniors with dementia, a memory box can help recall events and people from the past. These memories can stimulate conversation with loved ones. Reasons to make a memory box 1. Touching, looking, and remembering will become more important to rely on as dementia progresses; and all of these actions are used in the creation of a memory box. 2. Fond memories of the person’s history, personal interests and youth can be explored, sparking memories and conversations. 3. When you search for keepsakes to include in a memory box, you may gain insight and find special items you did not realize your loved one still had or was interested in. 4. Creating a memory box spurs creativity. Your loved one may be inspired to create another box about a different life event or memory.
Items stored should be personal, like a baby’s toy or postcard. The memory box should reflect comforting memories that have meaning to that individual. When you choose keepsakes for the memory box, consider: • Safety: Avoid heavy or sharp items. • Texture: Items should be easy to handle; texture itself can help stir memories. Perhaps one may not recognize items right away or understand why they were included. Consider labeling each item with a tag, and maybe a note about the memory. Keepsake Ideas Here are some suggestions for keepsakes you might include in a loved one’s memory box: • Newspaper clipping • Baseball cards • A keychain • A letter • A recipe • Artwork • Family photos • Postcards • Brooch, ring • Vacation tokens You can create multiple memory boxes with different themes — maybe one could hold memories of children and another of a favorite hobby, for instance. When you open the memory box with your loved one, ask them to share memories. You may find an item that was meant to stir a certain memory brings on another. Or, it could inspire a waterfall of thoughts and conversation, leaving you with new, lasting memories of your loved one.
Ways to Make a Memory Box A memory box can be as decorative or as simple as you like. Ideally, it will be easy to access and lift, to store a number of items of reasonable shapes and sizes, and to fit on your loved one’s lap or a small table.
