News: Case Management Information Home Improvement Project Ideas for Aging in Place

Holiday Gift Ideas for Seniors Looking for gift-giving ideas for an older adult? Here are a few suggestions: « A photo album to showcase special times and events for reminiscing. « Gift certificates for hair styling, grocery store, massage, a pedicure or to a favorite restaurant or movie theatre. « Cab vouchers or gift certificates to ride services such as Uber or Lyft. « A special blanket for extra warmth and security. « Products for ease and safety, such as motion-activated, stick-anywhere LED lights. For the kitchen, automatic can or jar openers. « For fun, consider puzzles, word search, large print playing cards, a magazine subscription, an automatic card shuffler, coloring books with a nice set of colored pencils. « And most importantly, the gift of time is often the most cherished gift of all.

Are you planning to stay in your home for as long as you can? If so, you’re not alone. According to research by the National Conference of State Legislatures and the AARP Public Policy Institute, nearly 90 percent of people over the age of 65 want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. Unfortunately, most homes are not designed for aging in place. However, there are some remodeling projects that can help people of all ages live more comfortably in their homes. ·

Consider smart home products like thermostats, lighting, or doorbells. Adjust your home’s temperature, turn the lights on or off, or see who is at your door with the push of a button or with a voice command.

·

Take steps to prevent falls. Add handrails on both sides of a stairway. If your house has front steps, consider changing your entryway so that there is a sloping walkway rather than steps. An overhang over your main entrance will shield you from rain and snow and reduce your risk of falling on slippery pavement. In addition, pay attention to floor surfaces. Hardwood floors can be slippery, but adding area rugs can create a tripping hazard. On the other hand, carpeting reduces the risk of tripping and can help cushion a fall. However, wheelchairs and walkers might not easily roll over carpet.

·

Get creative with your home’s layout. Having a bedroom and full bathroom on the first floor means you will not have to climb stairs every day. In addition, if you move the laundry to the main floor, you will not have to carry a laundry basket up and down stairs.

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

FRIENDSHIP FUND If you are in need of financial assistance to participate in activities at the Center, there is a fund to help. To access or to donate funds call Cindy at 873-8585.

News: Case Management Information ¡

Think about how to make your bathroom accessible to people of all ages, heights, and mobility. A walk-in tub or curbless shower eliminates the need to step over the edge or a bathtub or shower. In addition, a taller toilet can make it easier to sit down and stand up. Finally, make sure your bathroom walls can accommodate grab bars.

¡

Maintain independence in your kitchen. Consider adding rollout shelves or pullout drawers for storage so that you do not have to bend over as much. A microwave at counter height and seated work spaces make food preparation easier for people who have trouble standing. Finally, ranges or cooktops with controls on the front eliminate the need to reach across hot burners.

¡

Do not forget about outlets, switches, and doorknobs. Consider putting outlets and switches where they can be reached by someone who is sitting. Light switches that do not require grasping will be easier to use. Doors with levers rather than doorknobs are easier to use by people who have arthritis or who simply have their hands full.

Costs will vary depending on where you live and the specific project. Some of these suggestions can easily be added to remodeling or maintenance projects you may already be planning, and others can be done by you or a family member in an afternoon. Most importantly, think about your own priorities and your lifestyle to determine which adjustments and changes will best meet your needs.

Changes in Service Areas Please be aware that Dane County has changed some service boundaries for 2019. This means that for a few seniors (mainly those living in the Towns of Dunn, Rutland and Pleasant Springs) the services they receive may be coming from a different senior center or focal point in 2019 than they did previously. Dane County is attempting to consolidate services so that people can deal with a single agency to take care of their case management, transportation and home delivered meal needs. If you are currently receiving services and you will be affected by this change, you will be receiving further communication about the upcoming changes.

Social Security Administration Announces 2019 Cost of Living Adjustment By the GWAAR Legal Services Team

Coming Wednesdays: January 9, February 13 and March 13, 2019….

Off Stage Left: A Personal Journey in Opera Join Scott Holderer for an exploration of the most sublime of all art forms, grand opera. Scott Holderer has worked for numerous opera companies including The Santa Fe Opera, Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, NY City Opera, Miami Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Opera/Columbus and Spoleto Opera, Spoleto, Italy. “I (Scott) say “sublime” since opera incorporates music, the highest form of artistic expression, conveyed by the greatest instrument known to man, the human voice. Mix in poetry, comedy and tragedy, dance and the visual arts and from this soup we are transported to the heights of the human experience. I discovered opera starting at age five in front of a twelve-inch black and white TV screen transfixed by the brilliant Powell/ Pressberg/Sir Thomas Beecham film of Offenbach’s masterpiece, Tales of Hoffman. We will also discover Madame Butterfly, during the Korean War, to my first paid job in opera, at the impressionable age of 16 wrangling a pony at the old Met. Opera House on 42nd Street to a stellar production of Der Rosenkavalier. And this is just the beginning, as we will eventually discuss the composers, the stories that inspired the librettos, and the importance of a given opera in its historic and cultural context. We will watch film clips of the operas, listen to selected recordings of some of the great artists of their day and hear of my personal backstage trials and tribulations that went into producing opera.”

Healthy Holiday Eating Tips by Dana Larsen, from Senior Living Blog

As we age, it becomes harder to taste spices and the elements of the foods that we recognize. Foods may begin to lose their appeal, which is why many people tend to lose their appetites. If you have dietary restrictions, it can be more difficult to satisfy your taste buds with the foods you once loved and get the recommended healthy caloric intake needed to thrive. The good news? There are ways to awaken everyone’s taste buds without loading dishes with sugar, salt and fat. Here are a few eating tips to make your family’s favorite holiday recipes healthier: 1. Provide a ‘touch’ of sweetness with natural spices and ingredients. Reduce sugar by half in recipes and supplement sweetness with citrus, vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg, or what-ever works best with the recipe. Honey and molasses can be added for a healthier sweetness to a favorite dessert or holiday beverage. Fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit also gives a natural sweetness and appeal. 2. Substitute the fat with healthy alternatives. When baking, unsweetened applesauce, mashed bananas and prune puree can make a delightful substitute for fatty ingredients; just substitute half the fat with the desired substitute. For a healthy alternative for gravy, heat fat free, low-sodium broth (or drippings with the fat removed) and slowly add a concoction of mixed flour and cold skim milk to the broth until you reach desired thickness. Season to taste. 3. Slash salt with lower-sodium options. Substitute salt with fresh herbs and flavored vinegars. When it comes to sodium-heavy condiments, such as mustard, pickles and ketchup, try fresh tomatoes, salsas or cucumber slices. Sometimes lower-sodium versions of condiments are available. Be diligent about checking the nutrition label when shopping.
