Active Stoughton for Life (AS4L)

One of the main goals of the Stoughton Parks and Recreation Department is to create healthy lifestyles. A proven way to create healthy lifestyles is through physical activity and sport. Active Stoughton for Life (AS4L) is a movement to improve physical activity and sport in Stoughton. AS4L uses a scientific model called the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model as its framework. LTAD was created by sports scientist Dr. Istvan Balyi. LTAD is a sevenstage training, competition, and recovery pathway guiding an individual’s experience in recreation and sport from infancy through adulthood. LTAD does away with early specialization until age 12 and eases into more competitiveness as they mature and children get older. Using LTAD will make physical activity and sports more enjoyable for the children, and assist them in becoming better athletes. This will also foster in children the continued desire to participate in sports that will lead to active and healthy lifestyles for the duration of their lives. LTAD is used by hundreds of national sport federations, and is currently being introduced in America through national sport associations such as USA Hockey. The American model is no longer used around the world as the best way to develop athletes.

Physical Literacy Developing physical literacy is a building block approach that follows this direction:

Similar to the reasoning behind why children are taught to count when they begin school before they are taught addition and subtraction and why addition and subtraction is taught before calculus, the same rationale is behind developing physical literacy. Research shows that children need to learn how to do fundamental movements and sport skills before they can learn how to play a sport competently. For example, parents shouldn’t expect their child to be able to pitch in baseball if they don’t know how to balance. Children need to learn the ABC’s of physical literacy before moving on to fundamental sport skills and then sport specific techniques. The ABC’s of physical literacy are agility, balance, coordination, and speed. Once these basic fundamental movements are mastered children can then move on to learning fundamental sport skills. Fundamental sport skills are jumping, running, catching, throwing, kicking, swinging, hitting, etc. Learning these skills allow children to play multiple sports with ease. Not learning these skills can lead to a lifelong disconnect to sports and recreation. Once the fundamental sport skills are developed, children are then able to easily move on to sport specific skills. An example of a sport specific skill would be learning how to do a backhand in tennis. Research shows that learning a sport specific skill before a fundamental movement skill actually hurts performance ability later. Stages 1, 2, and 3 of LTAD develop physical literacy before puberty so children have the basic skills to be active for life.

Seven Stages of LTAD Stage 1 – Active Start (Males & Females 0-6)

- Children this age need to learn the ABC’s of movement - Children need to see that physical activity is a fun and exciting part of everyday life

Stage 2 – FUNdamentals (Males 6-9 & Females 6-8)

- Children should further develop fundamental movement skills including the ABC’s of movement - Children should be exposed to a variety of sports and physical activities throughout the year

Stage 3 – Learning to Train (Males 9-12 & Females 8-11)

- Major skill learning stage: all basic movement and sport skills (physical literacy) should be learned before the growth spurt - More time should be spent on training and practice than competing - Children being exposed to multiple sports and activities should continue

Stage 4 – Training to Train (Males 12-16 & Females 11-15)

- Major fitness development stage: endurance, strength, and speed - Continued approach of spending more time on training and practice than competing - Most important stage in determining the long-term potential of an athlete

Stage 5 – Training to Compete (Males 16-23 & Females 15-21) - Competition becomes serious - High intensity, high volume training

Stage 6 – Training to Win (Males 19+ & Females 21+) - College and professional athletics

Stage 7 – Active for Life (Enter at Any Age)

- Minimum of 60 minutes moderate daily activity or 30 minutes of intense activity for adults - Adult recreational sport leagues, youth (ages 13+) recreational sport leagues, fitness classes, etc

Residency Policy

Residents are considered people who pay property taxes to the City of Stoughton. Townships, School District, etc. have no bearing on your residency for our purposes. It may be possible that you might be a resident and our online registration system considers you a non-resident. In these cases, please contact us and we can make the appropriate change to your account.

How to Register for a Recreation Program

There are two simple ways to register for a recreation program. 1. The first way is by filling out a paper registration form. A paper registration form can be found near the end of the guide. Once the paper registration form is filled out, a person can mail it to us or stop by our office. 2. The second way is by going to our online registration site, https:// apm.activecommunities.com/stoughtonrec/Home/. Online registration is fast, simple, and convenient.

Recreation Department Weather Hotline

If you think there’s a chance that you’re program is cancelled by bad weather, call our weather hotline at 873-6724. A new message will be posted at 4:00 pm on weekdays and an hour before scheduled activities on the weekends. Your program is scheduled to be happening if the recorded message is from a previous day.

Recreation and leisure activities are an important aspect of life for all people. We will make reasonable accommodations to many of our recreation programs so individuals with disabilities can participate without fundamentally changing the program. Youth Sport Programs Youth Basketball Programs Our basketball programs for children in kindergarten through fourth grade have been redesigned this season. The programs will focus on using methods of coaching that develop basketball and movement skills for the long-term while making the sport more fun for the children. Frequency and duration of each grade class is based on LTAD and is intended to maximize development while reducing burnout. Each participant will receive an age appropriate basketball.

Little Viking Basketball – Kindergarten FUNdamentals

This program will cover six classes where players will be introduced to basic fundamentals and work on developing movement skills that are necessary to play basketball. A certified coach will be teaching the class. Parents are welcome to volunteer and assist with coaching activities if they would like to be involved and learn about basketball coaching. Participants will receive a 25 inch basketball. The classes are for this age group is for both girls and boys. Junior Viking Basketball – Grades 3 & 4 FUNdamentals

Each session will cover 10 classes where players will learn the basic fundamentals and work on developing movement skills that are necessary to play basketball. A certified coach will be teaching the class. Parents are welcome to volunteer and assist with coaching activities if they would like to be involved and learn about basketball coaching. The Stoughton Recreation Department is teaming up with other Dane County municipal recreation departments to bring a travel basketball league for children in grades 5-6. The program will focus on the FUNdamentals of basketball and emphasize good sportsmanship and teamwork. Each team will be guaranteed 8 games and an end of season tournament. Games will be played at various locations in Dane County on Saturday mornings and there will be one practice on a weekday. Volunteer coaches needed! Youth Open Gym Basketball We will be having an open gym on Monday nights this fall and winter for children. Please bring your own ball if attending. A gym supervisor will be present. The Stoughton Recreation Department is teaming up with Stoughton Girls Volleyball Coach Kelly Sorensen to offer volleyball instruction for girls in grades 2-8. Participants will learn proper fundamentals and techniques of volleyball. There is a major emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork and having fun! No equipment is necessary besides gym clothes and shoes (may wear kneepads). This is a great introductory program for volleyball, as well as a way to improve current skill levels.

Our Learn to Skate program has changed for this coming fall and winter. The program will follow the US Figure Skating curriculum. There will be two levels of skating to sign up for; Snowplow Sam and Basic Skills. Snowplow Sam is for children who are new to skating. Children will progress from learning to stand on their skates to learning how to do snowplow stops. Basic Skills is for children who would like to advance their skating ability. Children in Basic Skills will learn more advanced skills such as backwards stroking.

Let it Snow… time to create some beautiful winter art!

For this class the children will be doing a painting of a darling winter snowman scene. They will be using acrylic paint on a 16 x 20 canvas. Throughout this painting we will be working of shading and blending along with background, middle ground and foreground. I will walk them through step by step but each child will be able to put their own personal touch on their project. These paintings turn out beautiful and will work as a wonderful holiday gift or a treasured piece to hang in your home for the winter! How to Reserve a Park Shelter

Park shelters in the city can be reserved two different ways. The first way is to go to our website and go through the online reservation process. This process will allow individuals to search for open dates and seek amenities that they need for their gathering. The other way is to fill out a Park Shelter reservation forms. These forms can be found at our website or at the Recreation Department office. For more details, see our website, www. cityofstougton.com/rec.

Norse Park Outdoor Skating Rink

The skating rink at Norse Park will be open again this winter. The open and close dates are dependent on the weather. The warming house is open weekdays from 5-8 PM and weekends from 12-4 PM.

Lowell Park Community Garden

2015 will be our fourth year of having a community garden at Lowell Park. Gardening is a great family recreation activity and promotes a healthy lifestyle. The plots at our community garden are 15 feet by 20 feet and they are $35 apiece. Garden rules and applications are available on our website, www.cityofstoughton. com/rec, under park links. Kids Kick Healthy Living The Kids Kick Healthy Living Program works to encourage healthy habits. We are implementing new programming and snack options to help children make better discussion when it comes to eating and living healthy.

Job Training

Stoughton Wrestling: Hard Work, Commitment, Perseverance and the Preservation of a tradition that has put Stoughton on the map. Stoughton wrestling club provides a unique inexpensive opportunity for boys and girls to improve their physical strength and conditioning, learn how to set personal goals and what it takes to reach those goals. Young wrestlers will gain confidence, a stronger selfesteem, and be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment. The Stoughton wrestling club offers a coaching staff second to none. With their guidance, we have developed a program that will reach all skill levels, kindergarten through eighth grade. Come be a part of a tradition that has been going strong for more than 58 years.

Computer Repair The Computer Repair Program provides a creative and safe out-of-school learning environment where young people work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology, and once the work is done kids get to keep the computer.

Tutoring and Mentoring One of our missions is to help children overcome barriers to achievement in school and promote academic success. Each child does homework with his or her tutor and receives any extra help he or she needs in the fundamentals, especially reading or math.

Reach for the Stars Improve academic deficiencies and increase the percentage of students who graduate from high school. To accomplish this goal, the program offers broad as well as specific educational activities: 1. Help youth understand and evaluate their life options.

Developing Active Lifestyles Have you ever wondered how to ensure that your child will develop an active lifestyle? The best way to do this is by developing their physical literacy. Physical literacy is the ability, confidence, and desire to be physically active for life. ABILITY refers to competency in basic movement skills and overall fitness that allows individuals to engage in a variety of games and activities. This outcome is achieved through a mix of informal play and intentional teaching of movement skills, among them running, balancing, gliding, hopping, skipping, jumping, dodging, falling, swimming, kicking, throwing, and a wide range of skill that require hand-eye coordination. CONFIDENCE is knowing that you have the ability to play sports or enjoy other physical activities. It is the result of programs and venues that inclusive of people with differing abilities, and the support and encouragement from parents, guardians, coaches, administrators, teammates, and peers through the developmental process. DESIRE is the intrinsic enthusiasm for physical activity, whether in organized or unstructured formats, in traditional or alternative sport. This result is achieved through early positive experiences.

How does one become physically literate? 1. Participate in a wide variety of physical activities. A good rule of thumb is to only participate in sports during their typical weather season. An example would be winter and hockey. 2. Participate in both structured and unstructured play. A best practice would be a 1:1 ratio for optimal development. 3. Participate in activities that focus on developing fundamental movement skills like running, skipping, hopping, etc and on a wide range of surfaces like water, ice, and land. 4. Participate in activities that are age appropriate. Playing fields and equipment should be scaled down to fit the children in size. 5. Participate in activities that are fun. A recent study by George Washington University asked children what was fun. They ranked trying your best, getting playing time, and getting along with your teammates among the top five. Down the list was winning at 51 and playing in tournaments was even lower at 61.
