News: Case Management Information What About A Power Of Attorney? Planning Ahead! A Durable Power Of Attorney Is Essential For Caregivers It’s hard to think about it, but a day may come for us when we won’t be able to make decisions for ourselves. If this happens to a senior you care about, you may be the one that has to step in to manage their finances or decide what kind of medical treatment they should have. If that day comes, you’ll need a durable power of attorney (POA). What Is A Power of Attorney? A power of attorney is a legal document that lets your senior choose someone who will have the power to act in their place. It would allow you to make decisions on their behalf. A durable POA is one that stays in effect if they become unable to handle matters or make decisions on their own. As your senior’s chosen representative, you could pay their bills, manage their investments, or direct their medical care. Important: Do not use an ordinary or nondurable POA for your senior because that would automatically end if they became incapacitated. That’s the opposite of what you’d need. Who Needs A Power Of Attorney? Because life is unpredictable, it’s recommended that anybody over age 18 should have a power of attorney. Once you become a legal adult, nobody else is legally allowed to make decisions on your behalf or talk to doctors about your medical condition.
Financial And Medical Powers Of Attorney To cover the important issues, your senior will probably need two separate POA documents. One for healthcare and another for financial matters. The reason for keeping these separate is to simplify things for the people who need to use the POAs. Besides, your senior’s health care POA will probably be full of personal details that they wouldn’t want the people at the bank to know. And their doctor doesn’t need to know all about their finances! Please ask at the senior center if you need help getting these forms for a Stoughton senior resident! What Happens If There’s No Power of Attorney? If your senior doesn’t have any durable POAs and something happens to them, you may have to go to court to get the authority to handle their financial matters and make medical decisions on their behalf. During a health emergency, there won’t be time to do this. Instead, a stranger could be making those decisions! And if there is time, you certainly wouldn’t want the added stress and cost of going to court. Bottom line It’s smart to plan ahead and ask your senior to put a durable POA for financial and healthcare matters into place before they’re needed. This will save you, your senior, and the whole family from big problems if a major health emergency happens. Adapted from DailyCaring.com, 3/2018
With older adults, it’s more likely that a health emergency could happen. That’s why POAs are strongly recommended for all seniors.

News: Case Management Information Preparing for Spring! Watch for Allergies Springtime can mean the beginning of allergies for people who react badly to grass and pollen. Keep an eye on the weather. Many weather reporters and websites now offer allergy predictions as well. Untreated allergies aren’t just uncomfortable--they can lead to breathing problems, sinus infections, and colds. A doctor can recommend or prescribe a good allergy treatment. Taking it regularly can help prevent more serious respiratory problems. Drink Lots of Water As you age, your ability to notice thirst may decrease, so it’s important to keep an eye on water intake, especially when you’ve been exercising outdoors in the sun. Dehydration can adversely affect memory and concentration and increase fatigue; it can also lead to serious complications such as increased risk of falls. As a rule of thumb, aim for at least eight cups of water per day, and be conscious about the type of fluid that you ingest, choosing water, herbal tea and fresh vegetable juices over coffee, fruit juices or sugary sweet soft drinks. Get Outside and Garden In springtime, a highlight of many seniors’ lives is gardening, which brings a multitude of health benefits. Tending to a garden can boost your level of Vitamin D, which can, in turn, help reduce the risk of bone problems and fractures. On an emotional level, getting outside and breathing fresh air, listening to birds chirp, and watching worms crawl through the dirt can be as calming and relaxing as an hour of meditation. On a physical level, digging, planting and weeding can improve strength, flexibility and agility. If mobility makes this challenging, consider a “kitchen garden,” which could be as simple as a couple pots you maintain indoors, or a raised garden right outside your door. If this sounds interesting, see the Stoughton Librarian, to get a copy of “The Container Kitchen Garden,” by Anthony Atha, or “The Patio Kitchen Garden,” by Daphne Ledward. Adapted from The Arbor Company, Senior Wellness
Stoughton Wellness Coalition: Medication Disposal & Sharps Collection Sat. April 28 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM FREE drive through service at the Stoughton Fire Department. Kitchen Corner Senior Center Nutrition Program: Healthy Substitutions For Everyday Foods Article clips Go Red for women Www.goredforwomen.org
Unsweetened applesauce In many baking recipes, you can reduce the amount of saturated fat by substituting butter for fiber-filled, unsweetened applesauce—or any fruit puree—and canola oil. Butter can be replaced with half canola oil and half puree. Still looking to cut back? Try using ground flax seeds in place of oil. Greek yogurt Delicious on its own, Greek yogurt can wear many hats. An easy, heart-healthy swap? Serve this naturally sour yogurt instead of sour cream. You’ll need one small container of nonfat yogurt and a lemon. Squeeze the lemon into the yogurt, stir and serve. This is an easy way to sneak digestion-aiding probiotics into your meals. Just be sure the yogurt you choose is all-natural, plain Greek flavored and not fruit-filled yogurt. They are full of extra sugars your body doesn’t need. Ground turkey For chili, pasta sauce, and burgers, take a break from beef and try lean ground turkey. Reducing your consumption of red meat is a serious step in reducing your chances of heart diseases (or a recurrence). Egg whites When it comes to baking, egg whites can generally replace the need for a whole egg. (Be sure to check your recipe as it can sometimes vary.) The ratio tends to be two egg whites to one egg. In addition to baking, eggs can play a large part in our everyday eating. Love hardboiled egg on your salad? Losing the yolk cuts your cholesterol intake without cutting the flavor. If you’re concerned about waste, consider buying the egg white cartons for easy omelets and cooking.
