News: Case Management Information Dog Days of Summer Wow, it's sure hot and muggy. That's because we're in the Dog Days of Summer, the hottest, muggiest days of the year. As the song goes "roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer." If you are feeling the effects of hot, muggy, sultry, "weather that you can wear," you can be certain that you are in the Dog Days of Summer. It is also a period of drought and occasional strong thunderstorms. By definition, the Dog Days of Summer are the hottest and steamiest part of summer. Typically, this is the period when Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the Sun, from July 3 to August 11. When the Dog Days of Summer arrive, it's time to do those memorable summer time activities, that help us to keep our cool. They include: Take a dip in the pool Go to Troll Beach Take the grand kids to the new splash pad Watch sultry days go by in a cozy hammock Laze under a shady tree Quaff your thirst with a frozen summer drink Go to an evening baseball game It’s also important to remember safety tips related to sun and heat, including: Wear appropriate clothing Take it easy and stay indoors if high heat index Use of Air Conditioning and/or “cooling places” Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke Sunglasses for eye protection Use of sunscreen when outdoors Have fun but “listen” to your body during these Dog Days of Summer!

News: Case Management Information August is Healthy Aging Month: What Can You Control? Excerpt from WebMD.Com’s Stephanie Watson
Looking at your relatives' medical histories is like peering into a crystal ball. You get a glimpse at your future but not the whole picture. You can't change the genes you inherited, but you can avoid habits that contributed to your family's health problems. "Some people can have a family history of heart disease, but it's actually a history of smoking, overeating, and [an inactive] lifestyle. And if you adopt that lifestyle, you're going to run into the same problems your parents did," says James Pacala, MD. He is the associate head of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota. He says there are ways to break out of the mold that relatives before you may have set. Take preventive action now to help make sure you're healthy into your 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. "You must remain active and engaged. By that, I mean physically and mentally active and socially engaged," says Pacala, who is also president of the American Geriatrics Society. He ticks off the necessities: aerobic and resistance exercises, a balanced diet that's low in saturated fat and high in fruits and vegetables, and brain games and social outings to keep you sharp. You also want to try to avoid diseases. "Get your immunizations, your cancer screening tests, your cardiac and osteoporosis risk factors assessed before you have those problems," Pacala says. We've all seen 70- and 80-year-olds who look and act decades younger. How do they do it? Pacala shares a few secrets.
Refuse to take it slow. "There's a sort of societal expectation that you're supposed to slow down as you get old, and I think you should fight against that," Pacala says. "Don't let your grandkids get up and mow the lawn for you and get you a glass of water. Get up and do it yourself."
Take a daily walk. Even if your pace is gentle and the distance is short, the time spent on your feet will help keep your bones strong.
Read the newspaper with your morning bowl of oatmeal. Keeping your mind engaged could ward off the brain changes that lead to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, while the whole grains in your bowl help prevent heart disease.
Downsize your portions. Overeating leads to obesity and diabetes, which can shorten your lifespan. An overstuffed plate has also been linked to memory loss in people 70 and older.
Genetics isn't the only factor in aging. You have a lot of control over your health and making good decisions in living a healthy lifestyle. Take some steps now to stay proactive in your health.

Volunteer Corner Charlene Malueg, Senior Center Volunteer & Program Coordinator Did you know that volunteering could actually be better for you than you think? Research has proved that it provides many benefits -both mental and physical. Volunteering helps counteract stress, anger, and anxiety —and we all know the negative effects of those including high blood pressure, heart disease, and more! Last year, Stoughton Senior Center volunteers gave nearly 10,000 hours of their time to help keep operations going and programs running! 10,000 hours! That’s downright amazing. We are so very thankful for this support and when we say we couldn’t do it without you, we truly mean we couldn’t do it without you! For those of you who are contemplating if there’s a spot for you – my answer is “your bet there is!” Simply contact Charlene at 873-8585. Let’s work together to utilize your talents and maybe even improve your health!

Kitchen Corner How To Eat For Your Brain Sunrise Senior Living Recent research from the Kahn Academy revealed that the brain is like a muscle, and like any other muscle it gets stronger - and smarter - with the proper nutrition. When it comes to senior dining, especially among those with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, the right diet can actually help delay memory loss. Whole grains have been pushed on diets for a while now, but the grain really makes a difference, reported by BBC Good Foods. If you're looking for ways to focus better, feeding the brain the proper nutrients is the first way to help garner that concentration. Whole grains with a low Glycemic Index allow glucose to slowly enter the bloodstream, so you can remain more alert throughout the day. Most of your everyday items in the grocery store come with whole grain alternatives. Just check the packaging of your favorite cereals, breads and pastas to make sure you're getting what you need. Brightly colored cabbage especially the purple and red cabbage found in coleslaw has the same health benefits as blue berries. Fish oil has the most effective amounts of omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are also great for attentiveness, but are not made by the body. As this can only be obtained via diet, you have to be sure to work it in somehow. Fish like trout, salmon, mackerel and herring are all great sources of this essential fatty acid. Tomatoes are a great aid to those with Alzheimer's disease, as it protects against free radical damage to cells, explained the BBC. This miracle antioxidant is known as lycopene and can be enjoyed a variety of ways. Grow your own or head to your local farmers market to get some fresh off the farm. Pumpkin seeds don’t have to be joyed seasonally. Sources say that just a handful of these seeds will give you the daily amount of zinc your brain needs for enhancing memory and thinking skills.
