FREE Workshops will be held Fridays from 10:00am to 12:30pm at Madison College Center for Adult Learning. The address is 2125 Commercial Avenue Room 108, Madison, WI 53704 (across from Oscar Mayer). Information and insight will be provided for options, issues and practices that are of concern to older workers seeking job and career opportunities. Weekly topics or presenters engage the group with conversation about employment opportunities for older workers, facilitated by Alfonso Studesville, Career Counselor at Madison College. One of our volunteers passed this latest scam on to us so we can warn all of you. It is a Nigerian scam with a new twist. She received an email from a friend who is supposedly traveling with her family in Spain. The email stated that the hotel in Madrid where the family was staying was razed by a fire and all valuables including cash, cell phones and traveling documents except her passport were destroyed. The email states that the police were contacted but they were not able to do much. The friend states that she needs you to get money to her right away to get a new airline ticket and to settle an outstanding hotel bill. Our volunteer was able to locate her “real” friend to find out that this whole story is bogus. Unfortunately, our volunteer lost her entire email history and contact lists were cleared. So if you receive an email from a stranded friend or relative pleaseM.BEWARE!
Health Reform Hits Main Street Confused about how the new health reform law really works? A short, animated movie - featuring the “You Toons”—explains the problems with the current health care system, the changes that are happening now, and the big changes coming in 2014. Learn more about how the health reform law will affect the health insurance coverage options for individuals, families and businesses with the interactive feature “Illustrating Health Reform: How Health Insurance Coverage Will Work.” The animated movie is written and produced by the Kaiser Family Foundation and it is narrated by Cokie Roberts, a news commentator for ABC News and NPR and a member of Kaiser’s Board of Trustees. axãáM Case Management Services Stoughton Utilities is Alerting Customers to Beware of a Fraudulent Scheme Claiming to Offer Help With Utility Bill Payments.
The identity theft scam—sometimes pitched as a ‘bailout’ authorized by President Barack Obama's administration—has been reported by utility companies and their customers in states around the nation. The fraudulent offer, which is known to be distributed by methods including email, social media, phone calls or door-to-door visits, promises that a federal government program is available to help pay utility customers’ bills. In some cases, the scammers claim to represent a local utility.
Victims of the fake offer are asked to provide a social security number, credit card or banking information to enroll in the non-existent program, after which they are provided fraudulent bank account and routing numbers to use when paying their bills.
Stoughton Utilities is not aware of any such fraudulent activity in our community at this time, but is proactively warning customers to beware of any such offers. Several hundred instances of the scam have been reported elsewhere in Wisconsin.
Stoughton Utilities encourages customers to never provide personal information that the utility company should already have, including your name, address, and utility account number. Utility employees will never ask for your social security number. Customers with doubts about any caller, on-line contact or visitor claiming to represent Stoughton Utilities should contact the utility at (608) 873-3379 or at CustomerService@stoughtonutilities.com for verification before providing personal banking information.
Anyone that believes they have been caught in this scam should call the Wisconsin Consumer Protection hotline at (608) 224-4953.
When the fraudulent payments are discovered and removed, the customer is left with an unpaid bill and the risk of late charges and potential service disruptions. In the meantime, the scammers have gained personal information about the victim that could be used for the purposes of identity theft.

Agrace HospiceCare Offers Service to Help Individuals Manage Their Own Illness Care You may know someone with a chronic or serious illness who’s trying to manage their own care. They would benefit from the coordinated care associated with hospice, but they’re not eligible for hospice services. Agrace HospiceCare now offers a new service for chronically or seriously ill people: Agrace Care Navigation. A registered nurse works with participants to help them manage their pain and symptoms, manage medications, coordinate health care appointments, better understand their condition and more. Phone support is provided 24/7. For people struggling to manage their illness, Agrace Care Navigation can be an affordable solution. The $150/month subscription fee pays for itself by improving overall health, reducing costs related to ER visits and hospitalizations, and providing the participant and family with peace of mind and more time to enjoy together. If you know someone who might appreciate this service, or for more information contact John Van Dyke, RN, at (608) 327-7281.

The Elder Friends Program through Peer Support of Dane County connects older adults (60+) with trained Elder Friend volunteers. The program gives homebound or isolated seniors a chance to connect with a warm listener, and provides volunteers with a meaningful way to give back to their communities. In most cases, long lasting and mutually rewarding friendships develop. If you know someone who you think would make a great Elder Friend tell them about this great volunteer opportunity and how easy it is to get involved. For every person you refer, you will be entered into our drawing. The more friends you refer, the more chances there are to win! Win a gift basket filled with plenty of goodies. Drawing will be held in October. Contact Anita Brown-Huber at 608-846-9469.
