axãáM Case Management Services MEDICARE D COVERAGE You have until December 7, 2012 to change your Medicare D (Prescription Drug) Insurance Plan. Even if you are satisfied with your coverage be sure to check your current drugs with the formulary coverage of your plan for 2013. Companies change their formularies and a drug that was totally covered for 2012 may not be covered for 2013. You can call your plan directly; review your drug list online at Medicare.gov The Official U.S. Government Site for Medicare; meet with a volunteer at the Senior Center; meet with a Senor Center Case Manager; or check with your pharmacy.

2-Cut the gift list. Rein gift exchanges that have outgrown or lost their meaning. Limit gifts to children only, draw names, or organize a gift exchange. 3-Wrap as you go. Who needs to spend Christmas Eve catching up on wrapping chores? Sticky notes will help you keep track of gift contents. 4-Buy, don’t bake. Turn your back on the oven this year. Supermarkets, bakeries and the freezer department of the discount warehouses are a great source for delicious, prebaked holiday treats. Pick one special family treat to make instead. 5-Call, don’t send cards. Reach out and touch someoneJthe easy way. Online greeting cards are easy, inexpensive and fun to send. No more lines at the post office! 6-Scale back décor. Substitute a simple door wreath for outdoor lighting, a tabletop tree for the over-the-top-tannenbaum. Focusing holiday décor on the Big Three-front door, tree and focal point-can bring a festive feel to the house without day-long decorating sessions.

CHRISTMAS CALM: 10 TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY SEASON (Submitted by Cynthia Ewer on 10/25/12 Published on Organized Christmas (http://christmas.organizedhome.com)

If you’re aiming to simplify Christmas, take time to ponder ways to cut stress, save money and tame over-the top traditions. Getting simplicity strategies in place early will keep you from being swept up in holiday madness. Try some or all of the following 10 strategies to calm holiday chaos and rein in seasonal overkill this year. 1-Prune the to-do list. Ask, “If I don’t do this, what will happen?” Aim to knock down the list of chores to the rock-bottom necessity.

7-Cut the clean-a-thon. Focus cleaning attention on kitchen and public rooms; private areas can slide until season’s end. Better to schedule deep-cleaning chores like carpet cleaning until after the wear-and-tear of the holiday season. 8-Downsize dishwashing. Hand-washing fine china is nobody’s idea of a good time, so move to everyday stone ware. Simpler still: paper plates! 9-Finger food, not feast. A smorgasbord of tasty tidbits is easier on the cook and kinder to the waistline than a sit-down dinner. Share the work by hosting pot-luck dinners.

axãáM Case Management Services 10-Stay home! Cuddling in a favorite chair beats holiday travel any day. A holiday “staycation” allows for evening drives to see the lights, family camp-outs in front of the Christmas tree and evenings spent with carols and popcorn. Fun!

TIPS TO AVOID OVERSPENDING IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON 1-Plan budget and write a list. List out everything you want to buy and don’t forget family dinners and travel plans. 2-Pay cash. This will help you avoid all the fees and interests that are charged to your credit card and does away with the whole January credit card bill blues. 3-Organize a pot luck meal instead of a formal sit-down dinner.

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Stoughton Senior Center wants to bring a new and sustainable approach for Diabetes self-care to the Stoughton area. The Senior Center has received funding from the Stoughton Community Foundation to support the cost of the training needed for the Diabetes Self-Management Program. The program is designed to help people gain self-confidence in their ability to control symptoms. Through partnerships with other area Senior Centers, Stoughton Hospital, area clinics, Stoughton Home Health, the Wellness Coalition, and area rehabilitation centers we hope to train two Program Leaders. The Program model is delivered through a workshop format, consisting of weekly 2 ½ hour sessions over a 6-week period. Workshops are facilitated from a highly detailed manual, and led by two trained Leaders, one or both of whom are peer leaders with diabetes themselves. Anyone interested in becoming a peer leader or being in the Diabetes Self-Management Program please contact the Stoughton Senior Center and talk with Cindy, Hollee or Teressa (873-8585).

4-Do research on specific gifts you want to give. Look for sales. 5-Don’t open store credit cards. They often come with high interest rates.

Holiday Gift Idea...

6-Don’t fall for the No Payment Financing Offers. Six months down the road there they are!

Give a donation to the Stoughton Area Senior Center in the name of your loved one as a gift for the holiday season. Stop by the center to make a donation and receive a beautifully printed card suitable for gift giving.

7-Don’t buy extended warranties. 8-Think about how hard it may be for someone to return the gift to the store. (If the gift isn’t used and can’t be returned, your money has been wasted.)

Kitchen Corner RECIPE OF THE MONTH

KITCHEN CORNER Inclement Weather Food Supply List Include water first. Make sure you have enough for drinking water for 3 days. Also plan to store enough water for any food preparation and hygiene needs. Stock plenty of canned ready-toeat food, such as vegetables, meat, fish and fruit. Gather canned drinks like juice and milk. You can also have dry milk that will last almost indefinitely, but it will need water for preparation. Usually, powdered milk needs to be mixed with water, about 12 ounces for each tablespoon of powder. Store non-perishable foods like containers of nuts, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, chips, dried fruit and packaged toast. These types of food have a long shelf life and are a great source of energy. Make sure you include some sugar, salt, and pepper. Don't forget to store a bottle of multivitamins. Include a can opener, scissors, paper or plastic plates, cups and utensils to your emergency food supply.

CHEWY GINGER CHRISTMAS COOKIES 2 c. sugar 1 c. molasses 1 c. Butter Crisco 2 eggs Mix well by hand and add: 2 tsp. soda 4 c. flour 2 tsp. ginger 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. salt Mix all together (by hand - not mixer). Roll into balls the size of a small walnut, then roll into red and green colored sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for about 9 minutes. The cookies will look not quite done, but not baking them until hard makes them chewy. The cookies will sink down and have a cracks in them. Cool & enjoy!

Thank you to Fosdal’s Home Bakery for all their generous tasty donations throughout the year!

THANK YOU….to the volunteers, On Track Communications, McGlynn Pharmacy and Stoughton Hospital who made the Thanksgiving Day meals possible for the homebound.

Tenant-Landlord Laws for Seniors, What Are your Rights? The Tenant Resource Center (TRC) saw many senior tenants around Dane County deal with the negative repercussions of some statewide changes to tenant-landlord law. Because the precarious nature of renting as a senior, we find that it's difficult for senior adults to get information about their tenant rights, and then go forward asserting those rights. Some landlords, as a result of the law changes, have been unclear about their new set of limitations, and have been acting in ways that were not legal. The TRC recently received a grant that will help us to make presentations to seniors around Dane County, and we'd very much like to share information with seniors that are members of your center so that they will be more informed as tenants, and thus, more likely to be safe this winter in their housing. Join us on Wednesday December 12 at 12:30 PM as they present at the Stoughton Area Senior Center.

CHRISTMAS DAY MEAL The Stoughton VFW will be preparing their Annual Christmas Day Meal on Dec. 25th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the VFW. If you are homebound you may have a meal delivered to you by calling the Senior Center. If you are in need of a ride to the VFW for the meal, you may also call 873-8585. Thank you to the VFW.
