axãáM Case Management Services Foreclosure Group Sponsors Free Workshops

The Dane County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce is increasing its offerings for area residents worried about losing their homes to foreclosure. The Dane County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce is a coalition of public agencies, non-profit service providers and other community partners working together to develop sustainable alternatives to foreclosure in Dane County. Free workshops for homeowners in distress will now be held once a month, rather than once a quarter, from 6 to 8 p.m. every second Thursday. They take place in Room 142A at Madison Area Technical College’s Truax campus, near the airport at 3550 Anderson St. Free parking is available in the student parking area off Wright Street. The next workshop will be 3/10/11. The sessions are aimed at those who are not yet facing imminent foreclosure but are worried about the possibility and need more information about their options. Space is limited and reservations are appreciated but not required. Sponsors said attendees at the sessions will learn more about the loan modification process and other foreclosure prevention options, plus what to expect from their lender, what the lender will expect, how the legal process of foreclosure works and how bankruptcy could be an option. Call Annie Beaman at 608-261-5677 for more information or to register. The taskforce website at daneforeclosurehelp.org also offers resources. How Do You Want To Spend Your Life Savings?

For most seniors, gambling is not a problem. But for others, it becomes a way to cope with the loss of loved ones, retirement or loneliness. National Problem Gambling Awareness Week will be held during the week of March 6-12, 2011. Communities nationwide are working to raise awareness of the consequences of problem gambling and the resources available for individuals whose gambling is causing disruption in their lives. Contact: the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling at 1-800-Gamble -5 or (1-800-426-2535) for free, confidential help.

One in Six Seniors Lives in Poverty, New Analysis Finds One in six older Americans lives below the federal poverty line, according to a new government analysis which almost doubles the number of very poor seniors compared to the standard estimate. At 16%, the proportion of seniors living in poverty is also higher than the proportion of all Americans in poverty. “Too often, the struggles of elder poverty are invisible to policymakers and the public, yet millions are suffering and millions more are living on the edge of a financial crisis,” said Sandra Nathan, PhD, Senior Vice President of Economic Security at the National Council on Aging (NCOA), the leading nonprofit service and advocacy organization for older Americans. “Many seniors desperately need help assessing and navigating the options available to assist them in getting on a pathway to economic security, to meet their basic needs, survive an emergency, and afford medical care,” Nathan added. Are You Within Your Budget? If you are managing a loved one’s finances or you need to get a handle on your own finances, the first thing you should do is create a budget. Many people may think they have a handle on their expenditures and income without putting the facts down in writing. But a written budget is an easy, step-by-step process that can help: • Provide a reality check about how much money you have and how it’s spent from month to month. • Make sure you live within your means and help you identify opportunities for saving money over time. Identifying and comparing your resources to your expenses gets you started down the path of ensuring these two columns are in line. This becomes especially critical as you experience fluctuations in both income and expenditures. You may think that you don’t need or can’t stick to a budget, especially if you have limited resources. However, setting up a realistic budget is the first step toward establishing control over your finances. Your goal is to know exactly where you stand financially for the month. Without this knowledge, your spending, debt, and financial future can quickly spiral out of control. A financial education counselor is at the Stoughton Area Senior Center by appointment for FREE one-on-one coaching for anyone who has questions about basic money management issues. Call Sue Taylor at the Financial Education Center to schedule an appointment (608)283-1259.

Recipe of the Month

March – National Nutrition Month

Cold Vegetable Pizza

Eat the rainbow! Not only do foods of varying colors pack a wealth of nutrition, they also look ever so enticing on the plate! • Red fruits (think cranberries, grapes) and vegetables (think beets, red peppers, tomatoes) are high in the anti-oxidants which help fight heart disease, cancer and age-related memory loss. • Orange and yellow fruits such as citrus and vegetables (sweet potatoes, squash, carrots) are high in beta-carotene for healthy skin and eyes, Vitamins A and C and anti-oxidants. • Green leafy vegetables (think kale, spinach, cabbage, brussel sprouts) – the darker the green the better – broccoli, bok choy, avocados, and snow peas. They are high in fiber and most are rich in folic acid, vitamins A, C and K and potassium. • Blue and purple fruits (grapes, raisins) and vegetables (purple cabbage, blue potatoes, black beans) are high in fiber, anti-oxidants and many important trace elements. • White and tan fruits (pears, dates) and vegetables (garlic, ginger, mushrooms, shallots, onions, turnips) add spice, phytochemicals and anti -oxidants to any meal. Cauliflower is rich in vitamins C, K, and folate, and is one of the cruciferous vegetables that reduce the risk of many cancers. • Brown grains, seeds, legumes (beans, lentils, split peas) and nuts are high in fiber, zinc, iron, folic acid, minerals, healthy fats and B-vitamins.
