News: Case Management Information Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Gives Opportunity to Save Money Open enrollment for Medicare plans in 2018 is October 15 through December 7, 2017.

Four Reasons to Check Your Plan: w Your plan may cost more next year (due to changes in deductibles, premiums and co-pays) w Your plan may no longer cover all your medications (they change their formularies) w Your plan may have put restrictions on some of your medications (such as preauthorization, quantity limits and step therapy) w You may be taking different medications now. This is the time that Medicare beneficiaries who are enrolled in Part D prescription drug plans can review their plan to determine if it is still the best one for them. Because insurance companies can change their premiums, deductibles and co-pays, switching to a different plan often results in extra money in your pocket! If you have had changes in your medications this past year it seems obvious that looking into a different plan is a good idea. But even if you have not had medication changes, sometimes the different pricing structure an insurance company imposes will mean that the costs for your same drugs will increase next year. Likewise, a different company may now offer better coverage for those same medications. Some people have saved hundreds of dollars in a year by switching to a different Part D plan. Insurance companies can also change their formularies (the list of medications that they 4

cover) or change the way they cover your medication. In some cases, you will need to get prior authorization before your medication is covered. Sometimes, insurance companies will make you try an alternative drug before they pay for the one you and your doctor have chosen. This is called step therapy. Another restriction to watch out for is quantity limits, where you are limited to a certain number of pills each month. These are more reasons it is important to carefully review your Part D plan each year. People on Senior Care, Wisconsin’s state drug plan, are not affected by this open enrollment period. They only need to renew their enrollment every 12 months. A renewal notice will be sent in the mail to the beneficiary. If you are on Senior Care and have had medication changes, you might want to check on the cost of a part D plan to see if Senior Care is still the best option for you. Assistance with plan comparisons can be obtained through the following resources: w 1-800-MEDICARE or www.medicare.gov w Medigap helpline 1-800-242-1060 w Wisconsin Part D and Prescription Drug Helpline:1-855-677-2783 (Over age 60) 1-800-926-4362 (Age 59 or younger) w Stoughton Area Senior Center 608-873-8585 Take the time to review your insurance options. You just might end up with extra money in 2018!

Scholarly Scoop

Friday, Sept. 1, 1:00 PM Gifted

Friday, September 15, 10:00-11:00 AM Join us in welcoming Joshua Mabie, Associate Professor of English and author of “New Nature Writing and Wisconsin Landscape Words”. A group of young British writers and poets called “The New Nature Writers” have recently worked to preserve old, particular, and odd words for British landscape features that are in danger of being lost to globalization and technology. Wisconsin doesn’t have nearly as long a history as Britain, but we do have just as many wonderful and strange landscape features and phenomena to describe. Therefore, in addition to providing an introduction to some of the best New Nature Writers, this talk will explore ways to engage and describe Dane County’s beautiful countryside and natural areas. About the Speaker: Dr. Josh Mabie studies ways that writers engage particular places and represent environmental challenges. He has taught in the English department at UWWhitewater since 2012. In addition to scholarly essays that he has recently published on topics such as climate change and the New British Nature Writers, Dr. Mabie is currently writing an environmental history of Stoughton and a collection of essays about the farm he purchased last fall just east of town on Highway 51.

The story follows an intellectually gifted 7-year-old who gets caught up in a custody battle between her uncle and grandmother.

Coffee Counter At The Center Our coffee counter is a busy area here at the Senior Center. Lots of folks enjoy a cup of coffee, treat or water with a friend or class throughout the day. It is important that everyone contributes to paying for all of the items on our counter and in our fridge. All the items are bought by the Center. (Other than the generous donation from Fosdal’s and water and soda that are sometimes supplied by personal donations). There are no monies budgeted for these items and everything is paid for from the donations received for the coffee counter in the wooden box. If we do not receive enough in contributions, we will not be able to provide the selection or variety of things offered currently. I recently saw a sign at another Senior Center at their coffee area that said “donation doesn’t mean free”. I think if everyone keeps in mind to make contributions for what they take, we will have more than enough to provide lots of items for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for your help.

Simply begin to shift to healthier food and beverage choices. These recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can help get you started. · Emphasize fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products. · Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. · Make sure your diet is low in saturated fats, trans fats, salt (sodium) and added sugars.

Make Your Calories Count Think nutrient-rich rather than "good" or "bad" foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients, and lower in calories. Making smart food choices can help you stay healthy, manage your weight and be physically active.

Focus on Variety Eat a variety of foods from all the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen or canned. Eat more dark green vegetables such as leafy greens and broccoli and orange vegetables including carrots and sweet potatoes. Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans and peas. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pasta every day.

Look for foods low in saturated fats and trans fats to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils. Check the nutrition facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated fat. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
