This symbol means this event was moved from 2020 to 2021 and many tickets may already be sold.

Kid-Friendly Events

When you see this hand symbol next to a show, the kid in your life won’t want to miss it! Free admission for lap sitters (age 3 and under). Ahhh 2021—the year that couldn’t come fast enough. In addition to marking a smooth exit from the year that shall not be named, February 22nd, 2021 marks the 120 year anniversary of the first ever Stoughton Opera House performance! If the fates allow, we’ll be celebrating with party hats and a toast to the good years yet to come. In the meantime, please enjoy perusing the offerings we have scheduled for the spring of 2021. There are fantastic performances in-store…and even a surprise or two. The very best way you can help the Opera House weather the current crisis is by buying a ticket to the future. Now, perhaps spring of 2021 will turn out to be a bit more stubborn in its arrival than the average Wisconsin winter allows, but spring will come. When it does, you’ll have just the ticket you need to celebrate the moment. We have been privileged to gather and celebrate the songs and stories of so many generations that have come before. It will be our greatest pleasure to welcome you to the Opera House again during the upcoming year. We’ll see you at the show! William Brehm, Director

Stoughton Opera House: 2020 21 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Spring Season 2021 “The guinea pig story, the beer tent story, folks still enjoy hearing those, and I never tire of telling them,” says Perry. “It’s like we’re sharing a favorite song. But it’s also fun to be mid-show, trigger some memory or recollection, and just chase after it. See what we wander into together. That’s where some of the biggest laughs or most powerful moments are born.”

Layla McCalla

Thur. Feb. 11 • 7:30 pm

Leyla McCalla is a New York-born Haitian-American living in New Orleans, who sings in French, Haitian Creole and English, and plays cello, tenor banjo and guitar. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty — it vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary. www.leylamccalla.com

—Michael Perry

Steely Dane plays The Royal Scam Fri. Feb. 12 • 7:30 pm

Winner of the MAMA award for best cover band and Madison Magazine’s Best Cover Band, Steely Dane is dedicated to not only faithfully reproducing the Steely Dan and Donald Fagen songbook, but to bringing an energetic live-show experience to the crowd. Fifteen of Dane County’s best jazz and rock musicians have banded together around their passion for Steely Dan music, playing in the same configuration as the Steely Dan touring band including a four piece horn section and three background singers. Shows consist of hits and deep cuts and sometimes even complete albums and are sure to have you out of your seats singing along. www.steelydane.com

“The large ensemble fills the hall with soul and smarts. It’s a big band with a big sound, and it’s damn near perfect.” —John Roach, Madison Magazine

Michael Perry Thur. Feb. 18 • 7:30 pm

Humorist and author Michael Perry returns to perform his most popular hilarious and heartfelt stories. But Perry has often said he’s a farm kid who accidentally made a career out of going off on tangents, so expect fresh stories and unexpected laughs, as well. www.sneezingcow.com

Pat Godwin Sat. Feb. 20 • 7:30 pm

Pat Godwin has blossomed into one of the most clever comedians and prolific, award-winning comedy songwriters in the business. Pat first got national airplay with the holiday classic he crafted with his brothers James and Jack called, “Let’s Put Christ Back in Christmas” from the album Reindeer Games. After that, it wasn’t long before Godwin’s talents were being used on radio morning shows; a medium Pat is more than familiar with. He’s appeared on every top morning show you can think of, worked for six years as a part of Philadelphia’s Morning Zoo, three years for The Bob & Tom Show, and was a frequent guest and contributor to both Howard Stern’s radio and TV shows. Though Pat’s been charming audiences in clubs for years and has been featured on every major radio morning show in the country, one of his greatest achievements came with the release of 2005’s Under the Bed, a hilarious, eclectic compilation of new tunes, and live favorites getting heavy rotation on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show. www.patgodwin.com

“The quickest wit in the business and one hell of a live performer.” —Tom Griswold, co-host of the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show

Tommy Castro & the Painkillers Fri. Feb. 26 • 7:30 pm

Live on stage, Tommy Castro & The Painkillers’ road-hardened musicianship brings an unmatched passion to Castro’s blue-eyed California soul and hard-rocking, good-time songs. The San Francisco Chronicle describes Castro’s music as, “funky Southern soul, big city blues and classic rock…silvery guitar licks that simultaneously sound familiar and fresh.” No Depression says “Castro plays gritty, string-bending blues like a runaway soul train…a glorious blend that rocks the soul and lifts the spirits.” www.tommycastro.com

“Tommy Castro & The Painkillers showcase the power of the blues, soul and down-and-dirty rock ‘n’ roll… rousing and infectious. This is energizing, scorching, soul-shaking music … pure pleasure.” —Living Blues Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Dan Tyminski Band Fri. Mar. 5 • 7:30 pm

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. Since 1994, Tyminki has played guitar and mandolin for Alison Krauss and Union Station. His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band. Tyminski’s voice famously accompanies George Clooney’s performance of the Stanley Brother’s Classic song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow,” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. His vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey, Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed over 1 billion times to date.

Cactus Blossoms

Sat. Feb. 27 • 7:30 pm Blood Harmony—Whether it’s The Beach Boys, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase, gorgeous harmonies and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered), not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way, released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. www.thecactusblossoms.com

Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association four times and was recognized as 2004’s Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Dan will be on tour with his bluegrass band throughout 2021 and will be releasing his next record Not So Bluegrass a new bluegrass album in Fall 2020 on Rounder Records. www.dantyminski.com

Lera Lynn

Thur. Mar. 11 • 7:30 pm Throughout her career—a nearly decade long run filled with three album releases, a career-shifting appearance and soundtrack for HBO’s True Detective, hundreds of shows on both sides of the Atlantic, and a sound encompassing everything from Americana to stark indie rock— Lera Lynn has balanced her fierce independence with a string of collaborations. With Plays Well With Others, Lera Lynn cements her own identity as both creator and collaborator. On an album filled with Grammy winners, country icons, folk singers and Americana heroes, it’s still her star that shimers the brightest, shining light on the newest phase of an eclectic, ever-expanding career. www.leralynn.com

Gibson Brothers

Fri. Mar. 12 • 7:30 pm

Bluegrass royalty Leigh and Eric Gibson step into what some might at first see as uncharted territory on their country-soul breakout Mockingbird. The celebrated bluegrass duo were named back-toback Entertainers of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2012 and 2013. While the Gibson Brothers’ new sound is a mix of country, soul and seventies rock, in the second half of the show, the Brothers dip back into their bluegrass roots, showcasing the best of their talents and creating a night fans won’t soon forget. www.gibsonbrothers.com

Matt Wilson & Ken Stringfellow

Sat. Mar. 13 • 7:30 pm

Matt Wilson

It’s a harp and banjo orchestra. OK, it’s not an orchestra, more like a banjoharp-gentle-rockin-happy machine. We don’t know what to call it, but we want everyone to know about it. The music has a lot of light in it. We try to play beautiful songs from all eras, plus a ton of Matt’s own songs dating from the beginning of his songwriting quest right up to the present. www.minneapolismatt.com

Ken Stringfellow

Ken Stringfellow is perhaps best known for his work with The Posies, R.E.M., and the reformed Big Star. One of the most critically acclaimed power pop bands of the ‘90s, The Posies, which Stringfellow formed in 1989 with Jon Auer, released four albums before breaking up in 1998, leading to the formation of Big Star with Auer and Alex Chilton. Stringfellow has pursued a number of musical interests both solo and in collaboration including touring with R.E.M. In addition to continuing his partnership with Jon Auer, Stringfellow has enjoyed a fine career as a solo singer/songwriter. www.kenstringfellow.com

“Whatever you’re imagining a harp and banjo band to sound like, Matt Wilson & His Orchestra probably doesn’t sound anything like it. The vibe is neither heavenly nor hillbilly. Combining those instruments with bass, guitar and piano results in a surprisingly warm and wistful sound, and – as with all of Wilson’s music – it is instantly melodically memorable.” – Rock and Roll Globe

Junior Brown Thur. Mar. 18 • 7:30 pm

If you haven’t seen Junior Brown yet, you need to “guit with it!” A one-man musical hot fusion machine, he’s coming to town with his unique guit-steel—part electric guitar and part country steel guitar. A cross between Jimi Hendrix and Ernest Tubb, Junior Brown is one of the best surf guitarists around, with several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award, and an IBMA for his duet with Ralph Stanley. Junior has also collaborated with Hank Thompson, the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson, and has appeared in many movies and shows (Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Better Call Saul). His 11th album, Deep In The Heart Of Me, was released in 2018. Seeing Junior Brown live is a definite must; come check out the American Original voted #1 House Rocker by the readers of Guitar Player! www.juniorbrown.com

Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock & Roll Revue Fri. Mar. 26 • 7:30 pm

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello-Graham Parker-Pretenders-The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silverhaired, tenderhearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. www.nicklowe.com www.straitjackets.com

Music Appreciation events will take place on the following Mondays at 3pm:

• March 22, 29 • April 5, 12, 19, 26 • May 3

Joan Shelley Sat. Mar. 27 • 7:30 pm

For her eponymous fifth studio LP, Shelley headed up to Chicago to record with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy behind the board. The first single from the record, Wild Indifference, dropped in March 2017, with the full-length album arriving later that May. www.joanshelley.net

Adorned in colorful Western wear, this quartet of madcap cowpokes consists of Ranger Doug—Idol of American youth; Too Slim—the Fastest Wit in the West; Woody Paul—King of the Cowboy Fiddlers; and Joey—the CowPolka King. Perpetual crowd-pleasers, this Grammy-winning quartet mixes authentic Western music with yodeling, rope tricks, and a whole heap of crackpot humor in the timeless tradition of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Yes, it would be “The Easy Way” to call it a career after 30-plus years, but it wouldn’t be “The Cowboy Way!” The ponies are rested and watered, and Stoughton’s Favorite Cowboys are ready to saddle up and ride. www.ridersinthesky.com

Crystal Bowersox, a northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home, has built her life around music. Crystal’s love for music developed at an early age from a need to find peace in a chaotic world. Through art and creation, Crystal was able to direct her energy and emotion, finding a way to mend a mind in turmoil. For her, music was always the most effective form of catharsis, and she would play for anyone, anywhere. In her own words, “my guitar was an appendage. I couldn’t live without it.” Crystal is currently working on her new album, slated for a 2020 release. www.crystalbowersox.com

Even among the pantheon of music’s finest artists, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honky tonks, rural schoolhouse stages, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, Del is the living link. On primetime and late-night television talk shows, there is Del. From headlining sold-out concerts to music festivals of all genres, including one carrying his namesake, there is Del. Steve Earle

Fri. & Sat. Apr. 16 & 17 • 7:30 pm

Enjoy the show.

One of the great singer-songwriters of the past four decades, Steve Earle bridges the genres of rock and country music. A guitarist, actor, playwright, novelist, memoirist, and political activist, Earle, has released over 20 albums. At a young age, his grit and gristle got him up onstage with idols Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. Playing alongside these country music “outlaws” gave Earle the hard-edged stamina to press on through years of hard times to win three Grammy awards and earn 16 nominations. Earle brings a rare and unforgettable two night solo acoustic show to the stage. www.steveearle.com

With fiddles in hand, Madison’s premiere youth violin ensemble, MadFiddle, gears up for its annual Stoughton Opera House performance. Drawing on music extracted from Scandinavian folk, bluegrass, Celtic songs, eastern and blues folk tunes, Appalachian, Brazilian, ragtime, as well as modern acoustic artists, MadFiddle brings students between the ages of six and seventeen together for a romping, stomping, good time. MadFiddle is directed by the Madison Area Music Association’s 2016 “Teacher of the Year,” Shauncey Ali, and accompanied by the energetic adult backing band, Highway 151 which consists of Chris Powers on mandolin and bouzouki, Pat Spaay on upright bass, and Bruce Anderson on guitar. Thriving on its mad enthusiasm for the instrument, MadFiddle shows up with that blast of inherent joy that comes along with playing music with friends. www.Madfiddle.shutterfly.com

Leo Kottke

Tues. Apr. 20 • 7:30 pm

Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens, Georgia, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations, a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at UW Milwaukee, and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. www.leokottke.com

Bob Mould

Fri. Apr. 23 • 7:30 pm Bob Mould began his career as one of the angry upstarts of the hardcore punk scene, and over several decades he’s matured into one of the elder statesmen of alternative rock without giving up his integrity, his intelligence, or the fierce passion of his best music. This September, Mould releases Blue Hearts, perhaps the most directly confrontational work of his four-decade career, a raging 14-track collection described by its creator as, “the catchiest batch of protest songs I’ve ever written in one sitting.” Produced by Mould at Chicago’s famed Electrical Audio with longtime collaborator Beau Sorenson engineering, the album – which once again features backing from the crack rhythm section of drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy – nods to the veteran singer-songwriter’s groundbreaking past while remaining firmly planted in the issues of the day. www.bobmould.com

Aoife O’Donovan Sat. May 1 • 7:30 pm

Recognized for her ethereal voice and substantive songwriting, Aoife O’Donovan is also known for her collaborations. Called “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, O’Donovan is one of the most sought after vocalists and songwriters of her generation and her career has allowed her to collaborate with some of the most eminent names in music across a wide variety of genres. Co-founder of the bands Crooked Still and I’m With Her, O’Donovan is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, the Grammy-winning album by Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. O’Donovan also sings in the house band on the radio variety show Live From Here. Spring 2020 will bring a new program from Aoife entitled Songs and Strings where, alongside a string quartet, she will perform the song cycle “Bull Frogs Croon.” Written and developed with Jeremy Kittel and Teddy Abrams, the piece uses stunning text by the late, and former Poet Laureate of Oregon, Peter Sears, which premiered in 2015 at the Britt Festival. The remainder of the evening will mix songs from her expansive career with a few traditional favorites. www.aoifeodonovan.com

Watkins Family Hour

Thur. May 6 • 7:30 pm Moving from one landscape to the next—literally and musically—is nothing new to Sean and Sara Watkins, who have performed separately and together for nearly their whole lives. Growing up near San Diego, they played countless shows at a local pizza place in Carlsbad, California, with their childhood friend, Chris Thile. As young adults, those three musicians broke out nationally as Nickel Creek, an acoustic ensemble that sold millions of albums, won a Grammy and toured the world. With Nickel Creek on hiatus, Sean and Sara released multiple solo albums and pursued other collaborations, most recently with Sara’s involvement in I’m With Her. However, the siblings gravitated toward the idea of a second Watkins Family Hour album (self-titled debut in 2015) after realizing that their calendars afforded them a rare opportunity to write, record and tour together. Sean and Sara Watkins consider Brother-Sister a duo-centric record—yet one that feels bigger than just two people. www.watkinsfamilyhour.com

Rodney Crowell

Fri. May 7 • 7:30 pm Classics can become cliches. And cliches, like whiskey, nostalgia and orthodoxy, will deaden the mind. We can’t learn from what we know. It doesn’t work that way. But if what we know morphs and changes, and whittles itself down to truthful essence, then we can find delight and inspiration. That’s what’s going on here, in Rodney Crowell’s most unusual of retrospectives. Grammy winner Rodney Crowell explores his Lone Star roots with songs from his August, 2019 release Texas recorded with an eclectic cast of all-star friends--Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Ronnie Dunn, Billy F Gibbons, Randy Rogers, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Steve Earle, Ringo Starr and more. These are songs he wants to sing and play, performed as he wants to sing and play them. www.rodneycrowell.com

Sam Bush Band

Sat. May 8 • 7:30 pm There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torchbearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak. There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors, of the traditionalists, the rebels and the next gen devotees. Music’s ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush. www.sambush.com

A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age 21, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. www.rickyskaggs.com

Darrell Scott Fri. May 14 • 7:30 pm

Multi-Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moments, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant and candidly honest. After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band, producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark, and being named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find Scott roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life. www.darrellscott.com

Kruger Brothers

Wed. May 19 • 7:30 pm

Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were 11 and 12 years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, The Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. www.krugerbrothers.com

Michael Perry & the Longbeds Thur. May 20 • 7:30 pm

Wisconsin’s favorite bestselling humorist and author Michael Perry returns with his band the Longbeds for a night of music, storytelling and laughter. Perry began writing songs in the early 1990s during long nights when he was struggling to survive on prose. Often described as “country folk,” “roughneck folk,” “folk-twang,” and Americana, they prefer the description given by an audience member after a benefit concert in Perry’s old high school gym: “You sound just like Gordon Lightfoot… only zippier!” Perry has co-written or collaborated with musicians including Phil Cook, Justin Vernon, Sean Carey, Mary Cutrufello and Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Geoffrey Keezer, but not until he met producer (and Longbeds musical director) Evan Middlesworth did he learn to play a “cheater” B minor. In the fall of 2019, Michael Perry & The Longbeds released Long Road to You, an EP featuring five freshly-recorded songs and a spoken word piece from the Longbeds headlining stint on 2019’s Wisconsin Vinyl Collective tour. The set list will also include solid favorites, a couple fresh ones being woodshedded for a project due out in 2021, and—between songs—easygoing humor and tangential tales arising directly from Michael Perry’s other gig as a humorist and New York Times bestselling author. www.sneezingcow.com/music
