Greetings to you, the lucky finder of this 2021-2022 season brochure, from the Stoughton Opera House Staff! An extra special greetings and thank you to all of our member donors. Your generosity was key in the Opera House making it through the last 18 months. The coming season of shows has the rare distinction of being years in the making, and we think you will not be disappointed. In fact, despite the enormity of scheduling the 2021–22 performances, we have still found time to prepare some surprises for you! Something we’re particularly excited about is our beautiful Ghost Light Lounge, located on the first floor of the Opera House. The Ghost Light Lounge will be open before, during, and after Opera House performances and will offer various refreshments including regional beers, wine and cider! The Lounge will also host pre-show performances by local artists and provide an extra comfy respite for your behinds (complete with a video feed from the theater) during the shows. We’ve also installed a robust video streaming system during the last six months. The best part? We will be able to provide a home viewing option for many of the shows in our 2021–22 schedule! We know that some of you may not be ready to return to in-person events…or maybe you just don’t get out as much as you used to. Shows with a streaming option will be announced as we approach the date of each performance, so keep an eye on our website for more details if you’re interested in that option. We will always provide picture and sound that makes watching from home almost as good as what you’ve come to expect when attending the theater in person. For the health and safety of those attending in person we will be following the most up-to-date health guidelines from Dane County throughout the entire season. Visiting our website before you come to visit will be the best way to keep on top of what to expect. If you have had a wait and see attitude on vaccines then a wait and see attitude on indoor concerts is probably safest for you! As you’re looking through the many offerings listed here please keep in mind that some of these shows originally went on-sale in August of 2019 and may already be sold-out! Head over to our website to see which shows are already on-sale. If you have tickets from a previously scheduled date for these shows you do not need to take any action—just come for the show on the date listed here. There is so much to look forward to this season—and even more shows to be added to the spring. One of the best ways to spend more time at the Opera House than your budget will allow is to volunteer. It is super easy to get involved by calling the Box Office or heading to our website—we can use all the help we can get! We can’t wait to see your smiling faces and to share once again the magic that is a performance at the Stoughton Opera House, Southern Wisconsin’s Most Charming Theater. See you at the shows! Stoughton Opera House: 2021 22 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Fall Season 2021 Albert Cummings Thurs. Sept. 16 • 7:30 pm

It’s been said that you don’t seek out the blues – it seeks out you. For guitar virtuoso Albert Cummings, no words could ring more true. Cummings’ masterful guitar wizardry has drawn comparisons to iconic axe legends Albert King, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix and even his own musical inspiration, Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has graced the stage with such esteemed luminaries as Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Susan Tedeschi, Sheryl Crow, and B.B. King, who called Cummings “a great guitarist.” He also has worked with renowned industry producers Jim Gaines and David Z. Albert Cummings pours his heart and soul into everything he does, and his impassioned, all-inclusive style speaks directly to music lovers everywhere. His dynamic, engaging personality combined with blues musicianship at its finest has created an enduring, loyal fan base worldwide. www.albertcummings.com

Matt Wilson & His Orchestra Fri. Sept. 17 • 7:30 pm

It’s a harp and banjo orchestra. Okay, it’s not an orchestra. More like a banjo-harp-gentle-rockinhappy machine. We don’t know what to call it, but we want everyone to know about it. The music has a lot of light in it. We try to play beautiful songs from all eras. Plus a ton of Matt’s own songs dating from the beginning of his songwriting quest right up to the present. www.minneapolismatt.com

“Whatever you’re imagining a harp and banjo band to sound like, Matt Wilson & His Orchestra probably doesn’t sound anything like it. The vibe is neither heavenly nor hillbilly. Combining those instruments with bass, guitar and piano results in a surprisingly warm and wistful sound, and—as with all of Wilson’s music—it is instantly melodically memorable.” – Rock and Roll Globe, Katherine Yeske Taylor, Mar 25, 2020

The Cactus Blossoms Sat. Sept. 18 • 7:30 pm

Blood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase, gorgeous harmonies, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered), not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way, released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. www.thecactusblossoms.com

Joe Troop Trio

Thur. Sept. 23 • 7:30 pm Joe Troop is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During his decade in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he formed the group Che Apalache with three of his students. The band’s second album, Rearrange My Heart, was produced by legendary genre-bender, banjoist Béla Fleck and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Folk Album in 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made international touring all but impossible, forcing Che Apalache into hiatus. Working in a style dubbed “latingrass,” Joe melds music from the Appalachian foothills with traditional soundscapes from across Latin American. He composes wry and well-traveled acoustic music, sung in English and Spanish. Wrenching old-time music into the world of contemporary global politics, Joe creates spaces for sympathy, solidarity, and a little humor. His new solo album featuring Charlie Hunter, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Tim O’Brien and many more superb musicians will be released in late summer. www.joetroop.com

Dan Tyminski Band Fri. Sept. 24 • 7:30 pm

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. Since 1994, Tyminski has played guitar and mandolin for Alison Krauss and Union Station. His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band. Tyminski’s voice famously accompanies George Clooney’s performance of the Stanley Brother’s Classic song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow,” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. His vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey, Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed over 1 billion times to date. Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association four times and was recognized as 2004’s Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Dan will be on tour with his bluegrass band throughout 2021 and his next record Not So Bluegrass, a new bluegrass album is forthcoming from Rounder Records. www.dantyminski.com

Riders in the Sky Sat. Sept. 25 • 7:30 pm

Round up your herd and join in the fun with America’s favorite singing cowboys! Adorned in colorful Western wear, this quartet of madcap cowpokes consists of Ranger Doug—Idol of American Youth; Too Slim—the Fastest Wit in the West; Woody Paul—King of the Cowboy Fiddlers; and Joey—the CowPolka King. Perpetual crowd-pleasers, this Grammy-winning quartet mixes authentic Western music with yodeling, rope tricks, and a whole heap of crackpot humor in the timeless tradition of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Yes, it would be “The Easy Way” to call it a career after 30-plus years, but it wouldn’t be “The Cowboy Way!” The ponies are rested and watered, and Stoughton’s Favorite Cowboys are ready to saddle up and ride. www.ridersinthesky.com

An Evening with Dailey & Vincent Wed. Sept 29 • 7:30 pm

For the last 4 years, Dailey & Vincent have brought their multi-award winning American Music (bluegrass, traditional country and gospel) to a national television audience on their top-rated, national, weekly television show, The Dailey & Vincent Show on RFD TV. Grand Ole Opry Members, Five-time Grammy Award winners individually, three-time Grammy Award nominees collectively, four-time Dove Award winners, and winners of 35 IBMA Awards altogether (including 3-time IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award winners and 3-Time Vocal Group of the Year Award winners), Dailey & Vincent’s reedy harmonies and world class musicianship has gained them welldeserved praise for their own distinctive style and worldwide recognition as American Music gold. www.daileyandvincent.com

Jake Shimabukuro Sat. Oct. 2 • 7:30 pm

Andrea Von Kampen & Joe Pug Fri. Oct. 1 • 7:30 pm

Andrea von Kampen’s That Spell is an emotionally evocative powerhouse. It’s cinematic and sweeping- with literary references, reflections on nature and above all the ability to transport you to a memory, a place in time or somewhere you saw in a dream with vivid lucidity. Like a film director, she works as an aural auteur building scenes with her rapturous voice and the plaintive plucks of her guitar strings. With these ten songs, the Nebraska-raised singersongwriter immediately establishes herself as a formidable talent with her deeply felt folk-indebted sound and inquisitive, empathetic lyrics. Andrea excels at connecting the dots between personal experience and the world at large, and it’s what makes That Spell such an instantly memorable breakthrough to experiencing her artistic state of mind and the worlds she builds in her music. www.andreavonkampen.com Joe Pug is a singer-songwriter noted for his lyrical acumen and plaintive harmonica style. After dropping out of college in his early twenties, he moved to Chicago where he worked as a carpenter before breaking into the city’s music scene. Since 2008, he has released a string of criticallyacclaimed albums and toured heavily in the U.S. and abroad. Paste Magazine has written of his music, “Unless your surname is Dylan, Waits, Ritter, or Prine, you could face-palm yourself to death trying to pen songs half as inspired.” www.joepugmusic.com

Over the course of the past 15 years, Jake Shimabukuro has challenged and changed all notions of what was possible with a ukulele. But on his latest album, Trio, the acclaimed musician begins a bold and exciting new chapter in his already remarkable career. Unlike previous releases on which Shimabukuro sometimes utilized studio musicians recording songs he’d already written, Trio is radically different: It’s a true band album. The only sounds on the record are performed by himself, bassist Nolan Verner and guitarist Dave Preston, and many of the songs were composed spontaneously in the studio. In this way, Trio lives up to its title as a fully immersive document of the sonic alchemy the three musicians achieve on stage. “I really wanted to capture the sound that we make when we jam together,” Shimabukuro explains. “We get into this amazing improvisational zone at soundchecks: Nolan will play a cool bassline, and Dave will chime in with these incredible guitar parts. Then I’ll come in right after and play melodies to what they’re doing. So I finally said, ‘We should just go into the studio, hit ‘record’ and see what happens. It would be an experiment, but I had a feeling that great things would come from it.” www.jakeshimabukuro.com

The Lowest Pair Wed. Oct. 6 • 7:30 pm

Fans already know the chemistry between Palmer’s Midwestern charm, those long winters spent listening to a steady diet of Townes Van Zandt and John Hartford, and Kendl’s poetic and playful way with words. Kendl’s voice finds the link between Nanci Griffith and Gillian Welsh, and her barefoot-in-the-coolriver-water mystique, combined with Palmer’s worn paperback ease, always makes for a captivating sound, but 2019 brought the expansion of musical sounds (harmonica, drum, bass, violin, mandolin) and an incredible sharpening of their song craft, leading to the 2020 release of The Perfect Plan. www.thelowestpair.com

“The Perfect Plan is masterfully crafted.” -American Songwriter

Sam Bush Band Thur. Oct. 7 • 7:30 pm

There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak. There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors, of the traditionalists, the rebels, and the next gen devotees. Music’s ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush. www.sambush.com

Aoife O’Donovan with String Quartet Songs and Strings Sat. Oct. 9 • 7:30 pm

Grammy award-winning songwriter and musician Aoife O’Donovan is one of the most sought-after singers and songwriters of her generation. She has released 3 critically-acclaimed solo albums, is co-founder of the bands I’m With Her and Crooked Still, is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile, and spent a decade contributing to the radio variety shows “Live From Here” and “A Prairie Home Companion. She’s currently working on her first new solo album in 5 years, due out in early 2022. www.aoifeodonovan.com

Crystal Bowersox

Wed. Oct. 13 • 7:30p pm

Crystal Bowersox, a northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home, has built her life around music. Crystal’s love for music developed at an early age from a need to find peace in a chaotic world. Through art and creation, Crystal was able to direct her energy and emotion, finding a way to mend a mind in turmoil. For her, music was always the most effective form of catharsis, and she would play for anyone, anywhere. In her own words, “my guitar was an appendage. I couldn’t live without it.” www.crystalbowersox.com

Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings Thur. Oct. 14 • 7:30 pm

For nearly 30 years Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings have continued to bring the blues to its legions of fans around the world. He was indeed named for the singing cowboy. A singer, himself, and also a master slide guitarist with a distinctive and instantly recognizable style, Rogers has recorded with Miles Davis, Taj Mahal and recorded two albums together in a band with former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. As a producer he is perhaps best known for John Lee Hooker’s classic comeback album The Healer featuring Bonnie Raitt, Santana, Los Lobos and more which earned a Grammy Award. A night with the Roy Rogers and The Delta Rhythm Kings features classics and originals ranging from the acoustic slide blues of Robert Johnson, Lighting Hopkins to the rockin’ blues of John Lee Hooker and Muddy Water songs such as “Shake Your Money Maker”, “Walkin’ Blues”, “Terraplane Blues” “Dust My Broom” and “The Sky is Crying.” www.roy-rogers.com

Taj Mahal

“That’s not a slide on Roy Rogers’ pinky, it’s a time machine. With it, Rogers transports you to the Mississippi Delta’s past and future. “ —Guitar Player

Fri. Oct. 15 • 7:30 pm

: Taj Mahal doesn’t wait for permission. If a sound intrigues him, he sets out to make it. If origins mystify him, he moves to trace them. If rules get in his way, he unapologetically breaks them. To Taj, convention means nothing, but traditions are holy. He has pushed music and culture forward, all while looking lovingly back. “I just want to be able to make the music that I’m hearing come to me—and that’s what I did,” Taj says. The 76-year-old is home in Berkeley, reflecting on six decades of music making. “When I say, ‘I did,’ I’m not coming from the ego. The music comes from somewhere. You’re just the conduit it comes through. You’re there to receive the gift.” www.tajblues.com

“...I’ve been able to make a living playing the music that I always loved and wanted to play since the early 50s,” Mahal says. “And...it ain’t easy.” Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Projeto Arcomusical, Gregory Beyer, Director

Projeto Arcomusical is a world music sextet reimagining the AfroBrazilian berimbau through unique and powerful chamber music. The berimbau is one member of a large family of musical bows that hail from southern Africa. Its worldwide renown comes through its association with the Afro-Brazilian traditional body game of capoeira which is practiced in over 40 countries. At this afternoon’s session, three members of the Arcomusical sextet will present an engaging program of solos, duos, and trios, as well as tell stories about the history of the instrument and its worldly travels. www.arcomusical.com

Iason Goagtzoglou, Angelos Ntais, Pianos

We are privileged to have these two Doctoral Students, Iason and Angelos, as part of our series. This year they were the winners of the Irvin Shain Beethoven Competition at the UW-Madison. They played a composition for piano four hands by Beethoven. Usually the competition is won by soloists or a string ensemble so the piano 4 hands is an unusual medium to win this competition. Come and enjoy this opportunity to hear their unique performance.

Bob Mould Solo Electric: Distortion and Blue Hearts! (Jason Narducy opens) Sat. Oct. 16 • 7:30 pm

Legendary musician Bob Mould announces his “Distortion and Blue Hearts!” tour starting September 16, 2021, in Boston at Paradise. The tour is in two parts. For the first three weeks, Bob will be joined by Jason Narducy on bass and drummer Jon Wurster. Beginning October 15 in Bloomington, IL, Mould will perform “Solo Distortion” electric shows. On July 16, 2021, before any tour dates happen, Demon Music Group will conclude their year-long Bob Mould retrospective campaign with their fourth vinyl box, Distortion: Live. The 8 LP set includes live recordings from Mould’s solo career and his band Sugar. Mould’s live shows will span his entire 40+ year career, including songs from the Distortion collection and from his landmark band Hüsker Dü, as well as songs from last year’s explosive and critically acclaimed album Blue Hearts—about which Rolling Stone’s 4 out of 5 star review raved, “feels like a lost Hüsker Dü album with Mould howling invective over his buzzsawing guitar.” www.bobmould.com

Jason Narducy

“It’s been a year and a half away from the stage. I’ve missed the noise, the sweat, and seeing your smiling faces. I’m fully vaccinated, and I hope you are too, because this Fall will be a punk rock party with the band— and the solo shows will be loud and proud as well. It’s time to make up lost time, reconnect, and celebrate together with live music!”

Split Single frontman Jason Narducy is a universally beloved lifer, having first appeared on the scene at age 11 in the ‘80s Chicago punk band Verböten. He fronted Epic/Sony alt-rockers Verbow during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble, then spent nearly a decade as the bassist and backup vocalist for folks like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard, Telekinesis and Superchunk. Split Single’s Metal Frames was released in 2016. www.splitsinglemusic.com

The Wood Brothers

Fri. Nov. 5 • 7:30 pm

(Sean McConnell opening) Thurs. Nov. 4 • 7:30 pm

“Everyone has these little kingdoms in their minds,” says Chris Wood, “and the songs on this album all explore the ways we find peace in them. They look at how we deal with our dreams and our regrets and our fears and our loves. They look at the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we balance the darkness and the light.” Roots music trio featuring brothers Chris (upright bass, vocals) and Oliver Wood (guitars, vocals) along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, the Wood Brothers bring a distinctive flair to their union of folk, blues, gospel, and jazz. Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Chris and Oliver were exposed to American roots music at a young age by their parents and eventually started their own individual music careers, with Chris finding widespread success in the ‘90s as one-third of the adventurous jazz trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood and Oliver fronting the Atlanta-based funky roots combo King Johnson. In the mid-2000s, the two brothers’ musical paths intertwined and they formed the Wood Brothers with Rix. Their seventh studio release, Kingdom In My Mind, is a balance of darkness and light, and the Wood Brothers’ most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. www.thewoodbros.com

Sean McConnell

The Milk Carton Kids

Tapping into the broad spectrum of our human emotions and observations is what makes McConnell such a versatile collaborator and sought-after songsmith. He recognizes the dichotomy of “both/and” rather than just “either/or” not only in his personal life, but his creative one as well. It’s an artistic and heart-filled approach to viewing the world that McConnell admits started to coalesce on his previous project Secondhand Smoke, and makes manifest on A Horrible Beautiful Dream. “The quest for whatever this is,” he gestures broadly, “is a major, major drive in my life and also in my music. I think that’s pretty blatantly on display in this record.” www.seanmcconnell.com

Listening to The Milk Carton Kids—Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale—talk about their creative process, it’s easy to imagine them running in opposite directions even while yoked together. They have been known to argue over song choices. They have been known to argue about everything from wardrobe to geography to grammar. But their singing is the place where they make room for each other and the shared identity that rises out of their combined voices. The Only Ones, the group’s new record (out now on the band’s own Milk Carton Records imprint in partnership with Thirty Tigers), finds Ryan and Pattengale performing a stripped-down acoustic set without a backing band. On The Only Ones, the pair returns to the core of what they are about musically: the duo. www.themilkcartonkids.com

“The Milk Carton Kids’ songcraft features some unique guitar-playing—unexpected melodic flourishes and notes that are densely packed and dissonant where you wouldn’t expect them—that works in a really cool way.”

Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi Tues. Nov. 9 • 7:30 pm

Rhiannon Giddens’ new album They’re Calling Me Home, recorded with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, will be released April 9 on Nonesuch Records. Giddens and Turrisi, who both live in Ireland when they aren’t on tour, have been there since March 2020 due to the pandemic. The two expats found themselves drawn to the music of their native and adoptive countries of America, Italy, and Ireland during lockdown. Exploring the emotions brought up by the moment, Giddens and Turrisi decamped to Hellfire, a small studio on a working farm outside of Dublin, to record these songs over six days. The result is They’re Calling Me Home, a twelve-track album that speaks of the longing for the comfort of home as well as the metaphorical “call home” of death, which has been a tragic reality for so many during the COVID-19 crisis. www.rhiannongiddens.com

With strong roots in country music, Crowell has written chart-topping hits for the likes of Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Keith Urban and more. But owing to the distinctly universal, literary quality of his writing, has also penned beloved songs for artists as diverse as Bob Seger, Etta James, the Grateful Dead, John Denver, Jimmy Buffett and countless others. A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Crowell is also the author of the acclaimed memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks, and teamed up with New York Times best-selling author Mary Karr for Kin: Songs by Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell in 2012, with Karr saying of her collaborator, “Like Hank Williams or Townes Van Zandt or Miss Lucinda, he writes and croons with a poet’s economy and a well digger’s deep heart.” Crowell was honored with ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award in 2017, and that same year released the album Close Ties, which spawned another Grammy nomination for “It Ain’t Over Yet” with Rosanne Cash and John Paul White in the category of Best Americana Song. In 2018, Rodney opened his own record label, RC1 Records. He has released Acoustic Classics, TEXAS and his upcoming project, Triage, will be out July 23, 2021. www.rodneycrowell.com

Darrell Scott

Thurs. Nov. 11 • 7:30 pm Multi-Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world, what is at stake here, and our place in it. And ultimately, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters, that we don’t always get it right, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things, why we forever chase it, and why it is held sacred. www.darrellscott.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Richard Thompson Sat. & Sun. Nov. 13 & 14 • 7:30 pm

In 2017, Ivor Novello Award-winning and Grammy Awardnominated legend Richard Thompson gave himself up to the music itself. Picking up a guitar, emotions echoed through his deft fleet-fingered fretwork, poetic songwriting, impassioned picking. Those transmissions comprise his nineteenth solo album, 13 Rivers. In many ways, his career has pointed towards such a statement. Powered by evocative songcraft, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and indefinable spirit, this venerable icon holds a coveted spot on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and counts a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association in Nashville, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Awards among his many accolades. 2011 saw Thompson garner an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Moreover, Time touted his anthem, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” on its “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923” list. Thompson’s influence can’t be overstated. Everybody from Robert Plant, Don Henley, and Elvis Costello to REM, SleaterKinney and David Byrne has covered his music. www.richardthompson-music.com

Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock & Roll Revue featuring Los Straightjackets Fri. Nov. 19 • 7:30 pm

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello-Graham Parker-Pretenders-The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silverhaired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. www.nicklowe.com www.straitjackets.com

The High Hawks Thur. Dec. 16 • 7:30 pm

Kruger Brothers Sat. Dec. 11 • 7:30 pm

Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, the Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – the Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. www.krugerbrothers.com

The word supergroup gets overused to describe side musical projects, but it’s apt and well-earned when it comes to The High Hawks. With nearly 150 years of collective touring and playing between them, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth, Blue Sparks From Hell), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra) and Will Trask (Great American Taxi) have maintained a generation-spanning presence at the forefront of the roots music scene for over two decades. Of course, any new creative endeavor these days has to pass through the reality check of the pandemic that we’re all living through. While the band remains hopeful that they’ll be able to play some live dates by the end of the year, for now, they’re more focused on sharing the positive, healing vibes of their debut album. “There’s a lot of stuff on this record that’s soulful and soul nourishing,” says Carbone. “That’s what I get out of it. So I hope that people who listen will get something similar – a replenishment and a nurturing of the soul.” www.facebook.com/thehighhawks

A wonderful place to call home Watkins Family Hour (Courtney Hartman opens) Fri. Dec 17 • 7:30 pm

Nickel Creek founders and Grammy-winning siblings, Sean and Sara Watkins, have performed separately and together for nearly their whole lives.Although they have released multiple solo albums and pursued other collaborations, most recently with Sara’s involvement in I’m With Her, the siblings gravitated toward the idea of a second Watkins Family Hour album (self-titled debut in 2015) after realizing that their calendars afforded them a rare opportunity to write, record, and tour together. Sean and Sara Watkins consider Brother Sister a duo-centric record – yet one that feels bigger than just two people. www.watkinsfamilyhour.com

Courtney Hartman

The debut album from singer/songwriter Courtney Hartman, Ready Reckoner opens with the understated yet undeniable glory of “Hollow,” a track whose title traces back to her recent fascination with the concept of resonance. “The definition is perfect: ‘a resounding from the sides of a hollow instrument of music; a sound returned,’” says Hartman, who wrote “Hollow” while walking the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage route across Spain. “This whole record comes from a hollowing-out within myself—from being quiet and learning to listen again, allowing space for a resonance.” www.courtneyhartman.com If you are looking for restaurants before or after the shows, we encourage you to visit these fine establishments who support the Stoughton Opera House by advertising in this guide!

Stoughton Opera House: Spring 2022 Spring Season 2022

DeVotchKa

Fri. Feb. 11 • 7:30 pm

A cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass) and percussionist Shawn King, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor. They found widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie, Anti-, the band delivered A Mad and Faithful Telling in early 2008, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Paddington, and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. Meanwhile, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album, This Night Falls Forever, this time via Concord Records. www.devotchka.net

The Jayhawks

(The Mastersons open)

Fri. Mar. 4 •7:30 pm

The Jayhawks and their rootsy sound were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minnesota music scene in 1985. Over the course of almost 4 decades, 11 albums, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. After releasing two Indie albums in the 80s The Jayhawks signed with American Recordings in 1991 and over the next decade released 5 challenging, at times groundbreaking, albums, toured the world to widespread acclaim and even survived the departure of founding member Mark Olson in 1995. After a hiatus in the mid 2000s, the “classic” 1994 lineup reunited for another new studio album in 2011 and 2 years of solid touring, reacquainting audiences old and new with the band’s timeless musical vision. 2014 saw a late 90s version of the band led by Gary Louris hitting the road to support the reissues of the 3 Jayhawks albums released from 1997-2003. This lineup released the band’s 9th studio album in 2016, recorded in Portland, OR with producers Peter Buck and Tucker Martine. The band’s next studio album, Back Roads And Abandoned Motels, was released in the summer of 2018, featuring Jayhawks versions of songs Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus 2 new compositions. Recording for a new Jayhawks album was completed in Minnesota in late 2019 and in July 2020 the band released their 11th studio album, XOXO. www.jayhawksofficial.com

Mardi Gras Mambo 2022

The Mastersons are singer-songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore. When they’re not touring the world as valued longtime members of Steve Earle’s band the Dukes, the musical and marital twosome make inspired albums of their own emotionally vivid, deeply humanistic songs. The duo’s fourth set of original compositions is the appropriately titled No Time for Love Songs. www.themastersonsmusic.com

Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas

Keyboardist Nathan Williams Jr. is enrolled in the music program at the University of South Louisiana, while he leads his own band in the Lafayette area. Rubboard player Mark Williams is a cousin who has been with the band since its inception. Manager Sid ‘El Sid O’ Williams, the eldest Williams brother, is an entrepreneur who has built a remarkable network of businesses in Lafayette, whie honing his skills as an accordion contender himself. Amy Helm

Cherish the Ladies

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Amy Helm’s third album, What the Flood Leaves Behind, is her most autobiographical yet, both in content and creation. Released this past June via Renew Records/BMG, these 10 songs represent a gathering of ideas and experiences, friends and collaborators. The album also marks a landing—a pause for the traveling musician and mother of two young boys who was seeking clarity in her calling and career. www.amyhelm.com

“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do,” says The Boston Globe of Cherish The Ladies, Grammy Award nominated Irish-American supergroup that formed in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Celtic music scene. Celebrating their 35th anniversary, Cherish The Ladies has shared timeless Irish traditions and good cheer with audiences worldwide. They’ve brought their signature blend of virtuosic instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, and stunning step dancing to the White House, the Olympics, and to PBS with their television special, An Irish Homecoming, which recently received an Emmy Award. The Washington Post praises the “astonishing array of virtuosity” that Cherish The Ladies bring to the stage on a regular basis. Their new album, Heart of the Home, embraces the gift of music passed down from generations. “It was the greatest gift they could give us,” says bandleader Joanie Madden. “We’re carrying on the music of our fathers.” As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music making. www.cherishtheladies.com

Since 1998, the Western swing-gypsy jazz trio Hot Club of Cowtown has traveled the world bringing their own brand of magical musical chemistry to audiences far and wide. Along with Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin are equal partners in this original marriage of gypsy-jazz-inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt— which accounts for the “Hot Club” portion of their name—with the hoedowns, traditional tunes, and Western swing-inspired music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, represented in the “Cowtown” of their name. They have created a legacy of the preservation of musical traditions that have often been overlooked by the mainstream and alternative music worlds. Even Americana and roots enthusiasts have only scratched the surface of the multitude of musicians, past and present, who continue to inspire the Hot Club of Cowtown. Their 2020 release, The Finest Hour, is a live and unedited collection of songs that were performed in front of a live audience on October 19 & 20, 2019 at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The fifteen songs included in this album were all on the American music charts in 1945, as WWII ended with an Allied victory. The Finest Hour was recorded to honor and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. www.hotclubofcowtown.com

Michael Perry & the Long Beds Fri. Apr. 22 • 7:30 pm

Wisconsin’s favorite bestselling humorist and author Michael Perry returns with his band the Long Beds for a night of music, storytelling, and laughter. Perry began writing songs in the early 1990s during long nights when he was struggling to survive on prose. Often described as “country folk,” “roughneck folk,” “folk-twang,” and Americana, they prefer the description given by an audience member after a benefit concert in Perry’s old high school gym: “You sound just like Gordon Lightfoot...only zippier!” Perry has co-written or collaborated with musicians including Phil Cook, Justin Vernon, Sean Carey, Mary Cutrufello, and Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Geoffrey Keezer, but not until he met producer (and Long Beds’ musical director) Evan Middlesworth did he learn to play a “cheater” B minor. In the fall of 2019, Michael Perry & The Long Beds released Long Road to You, an EP featuring five freshly-recorded songs and a spoken word piece from the Long Beds headlining stint on 2019’s Wisconsin Vinyl Collective tour. The set list will also include solid favorites, a couple fresh ones being woodshedded for a project due out in 2021, and—between songs—easygoing humor and tangential tales arising directly from Michael Perry’s other gig as a humorist and New York Times bestselling author. www.sneezingcow.com/music

Eilen Jewell Fri. May 6 • 7:30 pm

Charlie Parr Sat. Apr. 23 • 7:30 pm

Charlie Parr is an incorruptible outsider who writes novelistic, multi-layered stories that shine a kaleidoscopic light on defiant, unseen characters thriving in the shadows all around us. Parr has a new record with only his name on it, and it isn’t shiny and perfect and commercial and catchy. It’s him. It’s pure Charlie Parr and that’s enough. He hasn’t moved to LA or Nashville; he’s stayed in the cold grey north of Minnesota, because that’s his home. www.charlieparr.com

American Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as one of America’s most intriguing, creative, and idiosyncratic voices. The Boise, Idaho songwriter leads a tight quartet that blends influences of surf-noir, early blues, classic country, folk, and 1960s era rock ’n’ roll. For well over a decade, they’ve toured relentlessly for legions of fans from Boston to Boise and Madrid to Melbourne, playing large festivals, theaters, rock clubs, and coffeehouses. The group has shared stages with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Mavis Staples, Wanda Jackson, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Blind Boys of Alabama. Eilen’s fans have marveled at her warmth and onstage humor alongside her beautiful songs and fiery performances. In addition to six of her own full-length albums, Jewell has released two albums with her country-gospel side-project, the Sacred Shakers; a tribute album to Loretta Lynn titled Butcher Holler; and a recent album of rare blues covers, Down Hearted Blues. www.eilenjewell.com

Over the Rhine

Sat. May 7 • 7:30 pm When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Rolling Stone recently wrote, Over the Rhine is a band “with no sign of fatigue, whose moment has finally arrived.” That’s quite a sentiment for a band celebrating 30 years of writing, recording, and life on the road. But as Karin Bergquist states, “There is still so much music left to be made.” Love & Revelation, the new album from Over the Rhine, is a record for right now. The songs have been rigorously road tested and burst at the seams with loss, lament, and resilient hope. The LA Times writes, “The Ohio based husband and wife duo has long been making soul-nourishing music, and the richness only deepens.” www.overtherhine.com

Janis Ian Last North American Tour: The End of the Line Fri. May 13 • 7:30 pm

Now in her fifth decade of writing songs and performing, Janis received her most recent Grammy nomination in 2016 for the self-produced “Patience & Sarah”, an audio book she produced and co-narrated with the actress Jean Smart (“Designing Women”.) This makes a total of 10 nominations in 8 different categories, a record for a solo artist whose first nomination came at the age of 16 for her debut album, Janis Ian. Ian’s tours have sold out in every country she’s visited, and her songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Diane Schuur, and Joan Baez. Janis has dueted with Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Mel Torme and, most recently, Trevor Sewell; their single, released only in the UK, jumped up the jazz charts, again reminding us of the diversity in a career that saw Ian on the cover of Downbeat at 16, featured in Melody Maker at 26, honored by the Grammy Hall of Fame twice, co-starring with Laurie Metcalf, Rita Moreno, and Alex Borstein in the final episode of Getting On, receiving Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews picks for her children’s book The Tiny Mouse, and continuing to expand and move forward with plans for several more books and a new album in the works. Or, as Ian herself puts it, “I’m just curious…I’ve never courted controversy, never set out to do so many different things – but I get curious, I think ‘What if…’, and things just…happen!” www.janisian.com

“We artists are the last alchemists, pulling your dreams, your hopes, your deepest desires out of thin air. We turn them into something you can hear, and play, and sing. So let us never forget this – we don’t sell music. We sell dreams.” —Janis Ian

Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society with New England Ragtime Ensemble

Fri. June 24 • 7:30 pm Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society is now in its twenty-first season of bringing chamber music with a bang to enthusiastic audiences in Madison and south-central Wisconsin. Since 1992 flutist Stephanie Jutt and pianist Jeffrey Sykes have been inviting other world-class musicians to join them in a three-week summer festival that puts the element of “play” back into chamber music, showing that chamber music concerts, often serious to the point of stuffiness, can be both serious and fun at the same time. www.bachdancing.org

New England Ragtime Ensemble

One of the most distinctive contributions America has made to the world of music is ragtime, a musical style that developed in AfricanAmerican communities in the late nineteenth century and took the world by storm. Ragtime features distinctive rhythmic syncopations that are very complex yet catchy—syncopations that greatly influenced the development of jazz. The style was popularized by “the King of Ragtime,” African-American composer Scott Joplin, through his hits “The Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer.” Over the years there have been many revivals of the ragtime style, but none more successful than the New England Ragtime Ensemble. Founded by Gunther Schuller at the New England Conservatory, the group won Grammys for best chamber music performance and classical album of the year. Flutist Stephanie Jutt was a founding member of the NERE, and she is reconvening the ensemble for BDDS audiences.
